% a few bursts of d/n.  There were a couple splotches in Split and Scent that were patched from the bootleg source on gdlive.com using Samplitude.  This section of crowd is not on the bootleg and could not be patched.

There were several level changes throughout the first set.  I used WaveLab4 to even out the overall level of the set as best I could.  There's still some variation, but it's a lot more smooth and consistent.  The worst level changes (5 or so) occur in Runaway Jim... probably why it was omitted from the bootleg source.

"Mason B. Taylor was a taper from Chicago that recorded concerts by many bands in the Chicagoland area and on Dead tours. He used a Nakamichi 550 with Nakamichi 300 mics with shotgun capsules for most of his earlier recordings. In later years he used Sony D-5 and Sony D-3 cassette recorders with Nakamichi 300 mics.

Mason captured spectacular musical moments and loved to share them with his closest friends. In honor of Mason and all the love he put into his recordings we are now able to share these moments with those who can appreciate them most.

As the shows get uploaded we would love for you to share your stories about the epic times the music evokes so we can all dial back into that moment when the magic was happening.

Notes: This was the first show of The Great Went festival. Harpua
picked up where the Clifford Ball Harpua left off. After Chalk Dust,
Trey remarked that the first three songs served as the soundcheck,
which the band did not do before the show. Theme from the Bottom
contained a brief What's the Use? tease from Trey. The jam out of
Simple, as well as the beginning of My Soul, included Odd Couple
theme teases. Halley’s Comet included On Your Way Down teases.
Cities included an After Midnight tease, as well as Trey altering
the lyrics to reference “Fishman sleeping in the daytime.” The
Julius intro was partially performed a cappella with finger snaps.
Funky Bitch featured a fireworks display behind the stage that
culminated as the song ended. After the show, the members of Phish
DJ’d under pseudonyms at a festival tent in what has become known
 as the “Disco Set.”

Brent's Bootlegs
   (Audio - 7)

This bootleg is my own pet project. It corrects the bootleg titled "Discoveries". The main show of this boot ran a bit too slow so I sped it up by about 75% of a semitone. Also a glaring yet minor problem with the original was it's hideous track indexing. The original had 5 tracks when it should have been indexed into at least 13. Now that this boot is corrected it rivals "Wonders of the World". That particular CD sounds slightly less distorted yet more distant sounding than this version. This show also has the semi-rare bonus material tacked on the end. The bonus material gets quite repetitive as you can see. Throughout this CD you get to hear "In the Mood" twice, "Best I Can" twice, and "Finding My Way" an incredible 3 times! Anyway, its a tossup between this boot and "Wonders of the World." Now the obligatory plug for myself: I designed these covers. That may be good or bad depending on what you think of them. Let me stress that these are the first set of boot covers I have made so please no insults ... heheh =)    (1999-04-01)

Ben
   (Audio - 7)

I picked this up exclusively for the "historic" value of the Don Kirshner and ABC In Concert stuff. The main show is one of those rare treats! Purported to be a soundboard (my guess would be possibly a radio broadcast tape, sounds too "processed" to be a typical soundboard feed), this only suffers from some generation loss, but is extremely enjoyable to listen to!

The "filler" is interesting to say the least, suffering from generation loss so there is lot of hiss! And the overall sound is a bit tinny, mainly the Don Kirshner stuff. But you can hear what's going on fairly well. I would only recommend this as something for the collector or completist! (but if you only want the main show, Work of Gifted Hands is the better version).    (1999-04-01)
