Mike Smith agreed to let them record, telling them he could not see any problems and that he would let the group know of his decisions in a few weeks.

Eventually, Decca Records rejected The Beatles, saying that "guitar groups are on the way out"[1], although it has since been suggested that their work that day did not yet reflect their true potential, and the "guitar" comment may have been intended as a polite let down.[2] Decca instead chose The Tremeloes, who auditioned the same day as The Beatles, were local and would require lower travel expenses.

While Epstein was negotiating with Decca, he also approached EMI marketing executive Ron White.[3] White (who was not himself a record producer) in turn contacted EMI producers Norrie Paramor, Walter Ridley, and Norman Newell, all of whom declined to record The Beatles. Months later, The Beatles went on to sign with EMI subsidiary Parlophone, after their 'comedy album' producer George Martin heard the Decca demos and decided to meet the band.

The Beatles 20 X 4 (Remastered Edition)

THE BEATLES
20 X 4 (Remastered Edition)
Remastered 2005 at Remasters Workshop

Lineage: Jeff's LP > 32-bit .wav > UUNet > Audition 1.5 > 16-bit .wav > TLH > FLAC > you

This is a restoration of the famous Beatles bootleg "20 x 4" originally issued 1977 on Ruthless Rhymes JPGR 1177. (This album is also listed in "Eight Arms To Hold You" as being on Idle Mind 1176.) It was reissued in 1979 and 1981 on JPGR REMIME OBS-204 with the last track on Side 2 omitted, in lesser sound quality. Most people who own this bootleg have one of the reissues. The original pressing is very, very scarce. Many thanks to Jeff for the original 32-bit .wav files from which this restoration was made.

The pressing was in such sad shape, I think this project has taken the longest of any I've done in the past, to get it right. Over four million scratches were removed. The sound of the turntable and the vinyl have been removed. Hum and odd frequencies have been filtered out. The recordings have been restored to true mono and pitch corrected to A=440 Hz. Of special note is "Peace Of Mind", which may or may not be The Beatles, that has had all of its pitch variations ironed out flat so that it does not speed up at any point, as the original did. This is as close to how the original tapes sounded as it is possible to get without having the tapes.

There is a song on this album that was titled "Penny O'Dell" by the bootleggers, which was said to be from Paul McCartney's 1974 Nashville recording sessions. This is not the case. Track 7 is a monitor mix, recorded on a portable cassette deck, by a person sitting in the control room at The Soundshop in Nashville. During a lull in the playback, he quite clearly says "Kenny O'Dell." That's whose session it was. Who knows how it ended up on a Beatles bootleg? This song is called "Homecoming Queen", written by Kenny O'Dell and Larry Henley (of The Newbeats) and it was issued in 1972 on the B-side of the single "Lizzie And The Rain Man" on Kapp K-2178.

Note that there are four tracks here from the as-yet-unreleased "No. 3 Abbey Road NW8" - which would not show up for another two years.

The tracks are from a data CD backup I made in 2005. There have been no CD extraction stages in this process.

Track Listing:

Side One
01  Oh! Darling - outtake with alternate vocal tracks, from Abbey Road sessions. 7-18-69 Take 21
02  Peace Of Mind - dunno who this is. You decide!
03  Blackbird - Paul & Donovan, from Mary Hopkin session for "Post Card", Trident Studios, London, 11-68
04  Things We Said Today - from BBC "Top Gear", recorded 7-14-64 and aired 7-16-64
05  Help! - this sounds like a monitor mix from 4-13-65 Take 9. It might be a fake. It's never turned up on another bootleg.
06  Every Little Thing - a monitor mix from 9-24-64 Take 4. Also never turned up elsewhere.
07  Kenny O'Dell - Homecoming Queen (monitor mix) - from The Soundshop, Nashville, 1972
Side Two
08  Imagine - John Lennon, from "Salute To Sir Lew Grade", 6-13-75
09  I Love My Suit - Ringo with Harry Nilsson and Davy Jones. Soundtrack of 1977 Japan TV ad for "Simple Life" leisure suits
10  Bye Bye Love - George with Paul Simon, from "Saturday Night Live" rehearsal, 11-17-76
11  My Carnival - Wings, WVUE-TV (New Orleans) news clip, from Sea Saint Studios on 2-13-75
12  Heather - Paul & Donovan, from "The Post Card Tape" 11-68
13  Her Majesty - unedited recording, 7-2-69 Take 3
14  Nowhere To Go + I'd Have You Anytime - George with Bob Dylan, late 11-68 at Dylan's home in Woodstock, NY
15  Bluebird + Mama's Little Girl + Michelle + Heart Of The Country - outtake from "James Paul McCartney", 03-1973 (debut)
16  Hi Hi Hi / C Moon (promo ad) - Wings, recorded specially at Abbey Road and/or Olympic Studios 11-72

COMMENT:
Sound quality was "F", now it is a bit better than a "D".
No more tape hiss at all (but no highs whatsoever)
and the guitars aren't so blaring anymore.
Note that they still are as shrill as they were live that night.
Were there even drums playing?  Can't tell.  That's how BAD this
source is. This remaster is on par (for lack of a better analogy) with
the 11-15-75 Rockford, IL show.  You have to remember they were
probably using a portable recorder that we used to use in
elementary school with an overhead projector!
The bass guitar on 100,000 Years intro now sounds very good.
Very dirty and so much 'growl'....very "loud"!
This is only for those looking to document KISStory, as it is such
an important gig.  Kudos to the kid that decided to roll tape!

From kissfaq.com (thanks Julian!)

December 31st - Industry premier at the Academy Of Music, NYC,
opening for Blue Oyster Cult with Iggy Pop and Teenage Lust,
where Gene sets his hair on fire doing the trick for the first
time in concert! This incident is handled with style with a
roadie extinguishing the fire with a jacket, while the set
continues uninterupted! Unfortunately, the band is not invited
back for a second set that night, but it doesn't matter!

Comments from the taper:

This show was the 2nd show in "The Garden of Eden", Tullamore. The 1st show was on Sun 2nd March 1980.
U2 played the same venue again on Sun 11th May 1980 (as a test gig for the forthcoming UK tour), and Bono referred to the mix up during his introduction to one of the songs (05. Another Day). I recorded both gigs at the time on a tape deck. I gave copies to some friends from time to time, and so BAD boots of at least one of the gigs has appeared.

U2 1980-03-02 Tullamore, Co. Offaly, Ireland

This show was in 'The Garden of Eden', Tullamore, Co. Offaly, Ireland on Sun 2nd March 1980.

This gig in Tullamore have never been logged correctly, so here it is.

U2 played Tullamore, Co. Offaly in the midlands of Ireland on Sun 2nd March 1980. This was one of the first times U2 played outside of the big cities (Dublin, Cork, etc), and most of the locals were down the pub or in ‘The Bridge House’ dancing to ‘Big Tom’. There were only about 20 people in the hall.

The hall was called 'The Garden of Eden' --- it’s since been pulled down and a block of apartments built there.

The problem with logging the show was that some reporter from NME or Melody Maker in England was with U2 that week, and reported the gig as being in 'Tullyermeny' or somewhere like that, so that's where the confusion occurs.

As I said, there were only about 20 people there.  What we lacked in numbers we made up for in volume. My lasting impression of the gig was the presence of Bono – even then he was the centre of attention.

The gig was recorded at the time on a tape deck. Some copies were given to friends from time to time, and so BAD boots of the gig have appeared.

This is from the original tape it’s now been cleaned up, and it's in flac. The quality is very good for an audience tape.

I'm not 100% sure about the titles to the songs, but I've given it my best shot.

I've called the CD 'Garden of Remembrance' - because it was in' The Garden of Eden' and nearly 30 years is a long time to remember back ....

04 The King's New Clothes
05 Inside Out
06 Another Time Another Place
07 Boy-Girl
08 Out Of Control

The silver disc plays back WAY too fast.
The files have been slowed down in Sound Forge by no less than 25%.
The result is the best sounding recording of this show that I have heard since I heard of this recording in 1986.

U2 1979-06-xx McGonagle's, Dublin, Ireland

This is one probably in the collections of many, but if not, it's a great starter for my planned series of early U2 to post here...

U2 played several dates at McGonagle's in Dublin in June, 1979, and this disc contains eight tracks from one of those nights...plus, a hodgepodge of other items, some of which were recently shared in Propaganda's amazing Boy era 9 gb torrent...the sound quality on these is just terrific...unfortunately, somebody did not include track 20 (Rejoice) on my disc, so if someone else here has that last track, maybe they could seed it so the cover art will match the disc contents.

Here is the track list (cover art is included):

2.  Cartoon World
