Pink Floyd Rehearsals The Festival Hall 1969 (HRV008)

This is about 20 mins of b/w footage shot at the Royal Festival Hall
by Anthony Stern (it sez so right there on the opening slate). It  seems
that Stern was called earlier that day by the band to shoot this  amazing
and unique performance. Unfortunately, he didn't go through all the
proper channels, and only got permission from the RFH to shoot the
rehearsals and only in certain areas of the venue. This becomes  apparent
when the venue's security "busts" him and orders him to turn over all
of his equipment. This all takes place while the camera is still  rolling,
but with audio only! You can hear the escalating dialogue between
Anthony and security/management as he pleads his case. Too bad he
didn't go through the proper channels and pay for the rights to film
the actual show, as he was evidently prepared to do, but at least we
have this incredible rehearsal footage to marvel at. That's the story I
heard and this is how I pieced this thing together. Maybe a phone call
to Mr. Stern would clear things up. I'll get back with an update if he
does. There is also current speculation that the actual performance
was filmed as well (quoted recently by Roger Waters).

A BIG thanks to Simon, who turned this footage over to me recently.
It seems that the last bit (Rick playing the final part of ASoS of  the
huge house pipe organ) was outta synch, but I was able to fix that
properly. Other songs include Biding My Time (with Rick briefly on
trombone), Green is the Color, Cymbaline, and ASoS... all incomplete
but still wonderful to watch!

Comments
and Reviews:

daneck (VG):

So close to being a complete show, but a few cuts and someone close to the taper gives a bit of naration from time to time.  A Passage to Bangkok is cut (sounds like someone accidently taped over it maybe) and actually split as two tracks on my copy. Just before The Trees there is another quick cut. A fast cut is also just before IV. Cygnus (first one) (along with some commintary), and sounds like a tape munch from about 0:22 to the end of the 2nd IV. Cygnus and doesn't truly recover.  It starts to sound a bit muffled after that, but still understandable.  Small cut 10 minutes into La Villa, another about :11 into Working Man, but before the music starts. As I already mentioned... So close to being a complete show, but the last bit of the drum solo is cut.  Not a bad recording, but unless you attended this show or are filling in gaps of a collection you'd probably be better off sticking to the titled releases for this tour.

I recorded this some 25 years ago from dutch fm radio, The station was VARA-radio as i recall.
Sound quality is A+, some fm static. The intro of next to you fades in due to a tape flip.
I skipped a very short portion of Landlord as it was interrupted by news-broadcast.
Can't stand losing you was played twice, the first version is not on this tape as it was never broadcasted.

Comments (from Willmot's page):
Very good sound quality, possibly from a soundboard source. The sound mix is good but the crowd noise and guitar are on one side with the bass and drums on the other. Overall, the sound is excellent compared to the first volume (above) even if the voice and bass guitar are slightly saturated. Great show!

Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978.  His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity.  In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes.  He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings.  In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.

He recorded many of the major 70's bands:  Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar" acts.

Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated.  Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes.  No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers.  Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.

Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community.  Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.

An audience tape of the infamous opening show of the UK Aladdin Sane tour, this was the first time Earls Court was used for a concert gig and a large proportion of the 18,000 audience had a very bad view and poor sound, hence a riot ensued, fistycuffs and general mayhem. Not bad for an opening night!!
At one point Bowie left the stage and the audience were passified by a roadie, the audience finally calmed down when Bowie refused to carry on unless they behaved.

This is a typical audience recording with the usual pops and squeaks etc although the quality is much better than average (8-8+), I have removed a tiny bit of hiss from the top end but thats about it. The tape does have a drop in quality from "Panic" onwards (6) and I had to do a bit of work, mainly by amplifing this section to keep the level as consistent as possible. Whether this is only on my recording or the master i do not know (Perhaps the guy was being trampled by this point!).

Per Pimm:

"The concerts improve as the tour progresses,  Here, U2 are warmly received and they play an excellent set during which the new songs in particular are played convincingly.  After Electric Co. Bono tells the audience that a member of the crew has just become a father."

This concert is meant only for the compulsive collector who wants one of everything...somebody just like me...this has been a rare concert for a reason, I suppose...sounds as if it was recorded with the mic under several layers of clothing...with the taper sitting in a bathroom....in a building across the street from the theater...during a heavy snow storm.  You can hear Bono mumbling words...the songs are definitely recognizable.

This was another in the long list of discs received in trade, unknown taper, lineage, but proven to be lossless.  Though, given the quality, I am not sure what we gain having this lossless versus lossy!

And, this is another in the long list of discs which has no cover art...but hopefully WILL soon!

Another Doors show I got years ago in a snail mail trade.  This one was just described as "low gen" so I don't know the exact generation but it sounds quite good for the time (please check samples).  The taper stopped the recorder between tracks so a couple of the tracks start and finish quite abruptly but, if there is any music missing, it's only a small amount.

--------------------------------------------------

Per Pimm:

"Bono picks up a guitar for I Fall Down and asks the audience not to laugh at his inadequate playing.  His singing lacks passion, he isn't very active physically and none too talkative either.  There is even an awkward silence when he mutters, 'We're called U2' after I Will Follow.  He has said this before at festivals and in American clubs; this show, however, has sold out and the Glasgow audience are well aware of of who they had paid to see.  Bono cannot think of anything to fill up the silence.  'These last nights I haven't been able to say much,' he says during the encore, 'I'll say it in other ways."

--------------------------------------------------

For those of you who have tried to trade for this in the past, you may also have had the experience of finding it nearly impossible to find a lossless version.  Dana has again generously helped, as this transfer from his cassette tape, is of course, lossless.  The concert starts out extremely muffled, but fortunately improves to 3/5 quality through the remainder.  As with the previous two from Dana, the wav files were run through Cool Edit Pro to reduce hiss, otherwise no remastering seemed to help.

We could definitely use cover art for this...thanks so much in advance for whoever of the capable people here at U2T tackles that project first.
