Bob Dylan 1978 European Summer Tour Compilation (Pink Panter Records)

1978 SOUTHERN MOUNTAIN REGGAE - EUROPEAN SUMMER TOUR

Pink Panter Records

***

The 78 alimony world tour is in full swing here & Street Legal has just been released.

Bob is in a very dark mood which adds great intensity to the mysterious, inpenetrable & great Street Legal songs as well as his back catalogue.
Just read the lyrics to Where Are You Tonight? (Journey Through Dark Heat) if you want inpenetrable.

One of the all-time great tour legs here, the 78 European shows were praised by fans & critics alike.
The London Earls Court residency is legendary to those who attended, but the circulating tapes generally have compromised sound which is unfortunate.
However, great sounding recordings are available from the Pavillon de Paris residency which makes up for this.
We also have a great show from Rotterdam, complete with barking police dogs & exploding fireworks,
a ferocious performance at Zeppelindfeld, Nurnberg & a final concert at Blackbushe aerodrome, Camberley (near London)
where Bob appeared in a top hat in front of an audience in excess of 200,000 to play the longest concert of his career (2 hours, 45 minutes).

What sort of music is it? Southern mountain reggae of course! That's what Bob told the audience at Zepplindfeld anyway.
Sounds believable for a disperate & desperate group of very talented musicians & singers
schooled in jazz, gospel, Elvis, reggae, R&B & prog rock thrown in with a few leftovers from Rolling Thunder & a roadie called Ratso.

Great, great music from Bob - he has equalled it on occasions since then, but never bettered it.

Co-produced by Detective Inspector Jacques Clouseau, President Vladimir Putin & Mr/The/Maybe President Donald Trump

Mastered at Lubyanka Sound Studios, KGB Headquarters, Moscow.

Another absolutely brilliant production from Jacques, Vladimir, The Donald and the death metal specialists at Lubyanka.

WHERE ARE YOU TONIGHT? (JOURNEY THROUGH DARK HEAT)

There’s a long-distance train rolling through the rain
Tears on the letter I write
There’s a woman I long to touch and I miss her so much
But she’s drifting like a satellite

There’s a neon light ablaze in this green smoky haze
Laughter down on Elizabeth Street
And a lonesome bell tone in that valley of stone
Where she bathed in a stream of pure heat

Her father would emphasize you got to be more than streetwise
But he practiced what he preached from the heart
A full-blooded Cherokee, he predicted to me
The time and the place that the trouble would start

There’s a babe in the arms of a woman in a rage
And a longtime golden-haired stripper onstage
And she winds back the clock and she turns back the page
Of a book that no one can write
Oh, where are you tonight?

The truth was obscure, too profound and too pure
To live it you have to explode
In that last hour of need, we entirely agreed
Sacrifice was the code of the road

I left town at dawn, with Marcel and St. John
Strong men belittled by doubt
I couldn’t tell her what my private thoughts were
But she had some way of finding them out

He took dead-center aim but he missed just the same
She was waiting, putting flowers on the shelf
She could feel my despair as I climbed up her hair
And discovered her invisible self

There’s a lion in the road, there’s a demon escaped
There’s a million dreams gone, there’s a landscape being raped
As her beauty fades and I watch her undrape
I won’t but then again, maybe I might
Oh, if I could just find you tonight

I fought with my twin, that enemy within
’Til both of us fell by the way
Horseplay and disease is killing me by degrees
While the law looks the other way

Your partners in crime hit me up for nickels and dimes
The guy you were lovin’ couldn’t stay clean
It felt outa place, my foot in his face
But he should-a stayed where his money was green

I bit into the root of forbidden fruit
With the juice running down my leg
Then I dealt with your boss, who’d never known about loss
And who always was too proud to beg

There’s a white diamond gloom on the dark side of this room
And a pathway that leads up to the stars
If you don’t believe there’s a price for this sweet paradise
Remind me to show you the scars

There’s a new day at dawn and I’ve finally arrived
If I’m there in the morning, baby, you’ll know I’ve survived
I can’t believe it, I can’t believe I’m alive
But without you it just doesn’t seem right
Oh, where are you tonight?

Thank you. That was a new song. This is an old one. Not really new. It gives me great pleasure to sing it in this place!
(before Masters Of War)

OK, We wanna do this tune. A lot of people say this is reggae, but it still seems to work pretty well this way.
It's an old song still says the same thing. Actually it’s more SOUTHERN MOUNTAIN REGGAE.
(before Don't Think Twice, It's All Right)

Thank you. Eric Clapton is back. He's gonna stay here and sing all night with me.
(plays I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight).

Thank you. Eric Clapton on lead guitar!

Trainload Of Fools (Rattlesnake / RS 085-86)

Jokerman: Very good to excellent sound [B+].

This is a very bright, transparent recording
which is marred on many songs by a very noisy audience which often drowns out Bob's vocals.

I torrented this one time on STG about a year or so ago,
and this wonderfully RARE set came straight from my
master LP set.

This is one of the rarest Doors recordings out there,
once even considered a "phantom recording" until a vinyl
edition popped up. This recording was made in 1982 and was supposedly
broadcast once in England in '83. It was pressed in a
limited number of 500 vinyl copies that were promos given
to radio stations in the early 80's. Very few have seem
to have survived. It contains three hours of anecdotes about
Jim Morrison from everyone from Corky Courson, Pam's father,
to Tony Liscandro, to journalists and the like. It is truly
an amazing set for any Doors fan. It also contains Jim reading
poetry from the Lost Paris sessions of '71. I cannot express
enough how damn rare this thing is...it's a tribute to Doors
fans all ovetr this board...this is for you, Ollie, you bastard!

I'm capped at 30, so please be patient and WAIT AROUND and share
with others, please...that's all I request.

Sorry, but no artwork on this one...

Enjoy!

Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978.  His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck.  In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes.  He also had a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings.  In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.

He recorded many of the major 70's bands:  Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as lesser-known acts.

Dan never traded copies of his recordings, although he did give some copies away to friends.  These releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever circulated, and are direct from his master cassettes.

The transfers are available as 16bit/44.1KHz flac files suitable for CD burning, and also as 24bit/96KHz flac files for those who prefer the higher resolution.

No EQ'ing has been done.  Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan Credit for the original recording.

Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community. Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.

As with the preceding ten years, Bob Dylan set out on tour again early in 1998. Despite early concerns, the year turned out much better than folks had expected. Dylan and his management had set up several high‐profile tours with other big names in the music business, including The Rolling Stones, Joni Morrison, and Van Morrison. While this could have led to a paint‐by‐numbers, phoned in series of concerts designed to check a box for disinterested concertgoers, the singer instead rose to the occasion of giving everyone quite the bang for their buck, so to speak.

The compilation kicks off with a raucous, call‐and‐response rendition of "Gotta Serve Somebody," always one of my favorites. A menacing, guitar‐heavy "Tears Of Rage" follows. David Kemper's drums are brought to the forefront of the following two songs, as he and the guitarists first lay down an off‐kilter jazz backing to "Million Miles" and then a thumping, high‐energy arrangement of Nashville Skyline's "To Be Alone With You." This last is a song that often falls short of its potential, but on this Scandinavian summer night, it comes alive as it did back in 1969. A rare late 1990s outing of "Across The Borderline" follows, with Dylan pouring his heart and soul into the borderlands tale, and then the first electric set draws to a close with a characteristically groovy "'Til I Fell In Love With You." "Rank Strangers To Me" showcases the bluegrass‐flecked harmonies of Larry Campbell and Charlie Sexton before Bob Dylan and the band move into an epic arrangement of "Desolation Row." The acoustic set is finished with an appropriately laid back, bass heavy ballad, "One Too Many Mornings."

The second electric set opens with the second Basement Tapes song of the collection, "This Wheel's On Fire." The song had just debuted in concert a couple years before, and Dylan's playing it for all it's worth by 1998, utilizing his backing band's vocals to great effect. Next is a much more recent hit, "Make You Feel My Love." This song would go on to be something of a disappointment in later years, as the dreaded upsinging often destroyed the song's natural charms, but here it is an unblemished beauty, superior even to the lovely album recording. Surprisingly, Dylan played organ on the song sometimes in 1998, but none of those recordings compared to this one. A very unique cascading arrangement of "All Along The Watchtower" follows; as far as I know, it was only played this way on the Summer 1998 tour. "Love Sick" is the next song, and it's clear that the song has already evolved from its 1997 incarnation ‐ the band members are tight, sharp, and allow Dylan to showcase some snarling vocals. A tender performance of Gordon Lightfoot's "I'm Not Supposed To Care" is the penultimate track, followed by some straightforward bluesy fun in "Leopard‐Skin Pill‐Box Hat."

Some might take issue with the absence of the excellently played “The Times We’ve Known,” by Charles Aznavour. This was actually included on an earlier compilation in the Thousand Highways Collection, and I thought it better to include some other songs not yet part of the series. Concerning the recordings, 1998 is a really great year. Perhaps moreso than any other year from the 1990s, the recordings from these tours are spellbinding and beautifully mixed. I had to do very little production work for the compilation. The band was tight, and unlike preceding years, no meandering instrumental sections robbed the songs of their power. The result is a distinctly unified, strong collection of tracks. Hope you enjoy, CS

The Who 1972-09-14 Palaeur Rome, Italy

LDB Special Series #364 (RLR collection)

Out of my 7,000+ shows and radio broadcasts, I have many concerts that were special for some reasons: the setlist, the
musicians, the venue or unexpected events. These are the ones I'd like to propose you. Most of these come from my
cassettes collection, so they will be released at a slower pace than my Master Series! But you won't be disappointed!
I will try to gather the most unusual things I have in my collection and, as always, your feedback and comments will be my
reward for all the work involved in this project.

DO NOT share this music on mp3, just convert it for your own use. Sharing mp3's is the right way to make me stop sharing
music here.

I think I have something really special to share with all Dimers, but first a bit of background. RLR has been a very active
trader back in the early 80´s with very wide musical tastes: he could go from Kiss to Joni Mitchell; from Genesis to Deep
Purple, Queen, Simple Minds, The Who, Springsteen and many more. In the past I could access his enormous collection to get
many U2 tapes some of which I have been sharing with you folks.

RLR had all sorts of tapes in his collection, traded not long after the show happened so most of them are low generation, in
particular tons of shows recorded in Italy which to me are some of the most interesting. Some of them, I had never seen
circulating in the trading circuit. Unfortunately he did not care about generation so this info, except for the shows he
has as masters, is not available.

RLR has kindly given me access once again to his collection. It was like a "kid in a toy shop" situation: it was hard to
select tapes and at the end I came home with some 250 tapes to listen and eventually to transfer in the digital domain. Some
of them will be shared here, possibly the most interesting ones.

I am ok with blogs and sites to re-post my seeds - provided they are in lossless form - however I ask you to keep intact the
infos of the concert including that this is part of LDB series.

And I am referring to (and not only):

The Doors 1969-07-21 Aquarius Theater Hollywood, CA

this is nearly the complete set of the second show of this date, 1969-07-21 performed at the Aquarius Theater in Hollywood, California.

disc 1 is missing only a brief section of tuning which occurs between when the music's over and you make me real.

disc 2 is missing light my fire which would be the second track of the disc and the celebration of the lizard which would be the fourth track on disc 2.

the celebration of the lizard is the same track which is on THe Doors Absolutely Live Album.

I have been unable to track down the missing sections of this show but feel that because it is both the most complete source i believe to be available anywhere and it is such an outstanding show, that it needs to be heard.

i hope you like it as much as i do.

if you do not already own it and love the doors, go out and buy Absolutely Live. It is an essential piece which belongs in every Doors fan's collection.

Here is the track listing of this great show

disc 1
intro
Jim's intro

when the music's over
tuning....file missing
you make me real

conversation with the crowd
peace frog (instrumental)
blue sunday
five to one
the crowd again requests
Jim introduces the movie
rock me baby

these are the files that were previously missing from the set of files i had acquired to this great doors show. they are the material that belongs at the very beginning of the disc 2 fileset. with the inclusion of these files, i now believe this show to be absolutely complete. i will also add that i think this is probly the best doors show i have had the fortune to hear. a true gem

VERY IMPORTANT: IF YOU DOWNLOADED THIS SET BEFORE, WHEN THE MISSING FILES WERE ABSENT, YOU NEED TO KNOW THAT THE NEWLY INCLUDED "TUNING" AND "THE CROWD HUMBLY REQUESTS" FILES ARE THE SAME AS THE "TUNING" AND "THE CROWD REQUESTS THEIR FAVORITES" FILES INCLUDED IN THE DISC 2 FILESET. THEY VARY ONLY BY ABOUT A SECOND IN LENGTH EACH AND THE DIFFERNCE IN TIME IS COMPRISED OF NOTHING OTHER THAN APPLAUSE. NO TALKING IS LEFT OUT OR INCLUDED IN ANY OF THE AFFECTED FILES. I INCLUDE THESE DUPLICATE FILES TO RETAIN THE INTEGRITY OF THE INITIAL SET OF FILES I OFFERED UP. ANY CHANGES TO SHOWS ALREADY AVAILABLE SHOULD NEVER RESULT IN THE REMOVAL OF FILES OTHERS MAY ALREADY HAVE GOTTEN. IF YOU BURN THESE TO A DISC, I WOULD RECOMMEND USING ALL FOUR FILES IN THE NEW FOLDER AND REMOVING THE FIRST 2 FILES FROM THE CD 2 FOLDER AS THIS RESULTS IN THE PERFECT FLOW OF THIS SHOW.

there is also now a more exhaustive set of artwork available for this set which is contained in the "newly added artwork" file.

i would also like to point out the contribution of CB who in addition to originally turning me on to this show, also located these files and pointed them out to me. alot of work has gone into this set of files. it is the most work i have personally done on any show i have worked on and i am extremely happy that this show is now completed and ready to be enjoyed in its entirety by anyone fortunate enough to get this great great doors show.

finally, here is the setlist for the final and complete version of disc 2

disc 2 (total time 1hour 12 minutes 23 seconds)

Welcome to the 1986 Bob Dylan show. This is one of the more intense years of touring, in terms both of shows performed and style of performance; it bears a striking resemblance to 1978 in its nearly unprecedented (until that point) number of concerts, and is quite similar to 1974 and 1988 in the forceful vocal delivery. Don't let that put you off, though! There's plenty of gold in these shows, in spite of the singer's own admission of feeling adrift in 1986 in his autobiography.

Of particular thematic interest is the year's emphasis on 1950s rockabilly songs. These are represented on this compilation by "Let The Good Times Roll," "Red Cadillac & A Black Mustache," and "Rock 'Em Dead." The first is a very wellknown early rock tune, but the second and third have more peculiar histories.

"Red Cadillac" was written and recorded by Warren Smith in 1957, but went unreleased until 1973. Others recorded the song between those two years, and Dylan recorded and played live a version of the song in 1986. He would also go on to record a very different version for a Sun Records tribute in 2001, but that is offlimits for the blog since it has been officially released.

"Rock 'Em Dead" is also rather bizarre. Though the song is often referred to as "Uranium Rock," it bears little resemblance to that Warren Smith recording. Notably, it makes no reference to uranium! Instead, it is fairly representative of a writing technique employed by Dylan in the mid1980s. Much like his rewrite of Roy Head's "Treat Her Right" into "Shake," and his rewrite of his own song "Someone's Got A Hold Of My Heart" into "Has Anybody Seen My Love," this was largely a revision of a preexisting song into something different. Arguably, this is the root of the writing technique that the singer would go on to use to excellent effect on "Love & Theft" and "Modern Times."

Prior to the beginning of the NeverEnding Tour in 1988, Dylan played his 1980s songs with regularity, so those are emphasized on this set. "I'll Remember You" and "Lenny Bruce" are offered here in definitive performances. The latter features a lengthy introduction comparing the song's titular figure to Tennessee Williams in their influence and lack of recognition in their own lifetimes.

"Union Sundown" is sadly a bit incoherent, aside from the chorus, but the emphatic nature of the rendition makes up for its lyrical confusion. "Clean Cut Kid" and "Band Of The Hand" are quite spirited too, and in the same vein as Dylan's other 'rant' songs from the '80s like "Foot Of Pride" and "The Groom's Still Waiting At The Altar." Perhaps unfortunately, this is a style he wouldn't generally return to after this decade (excepting perhaps "TV Talkin' Song" from 1990).

"When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky" is more suggestive of the direction Dylan would be headed with the early NeverEnding Tour in 1989, with its dark sound and darker themes. It is a bit more atmospheric than the interesting version played in 1987, but no less rocking. "In The Garden," too, is a bit atmospheric, and represents my favorite arrangement of this intense gospel song. Along with "I & I," this song is heavily dependent on the background vocals.

I believe that Dylan's vocal relationship with his backup singers came to its peak in 1986. Though he had a trio singing behind him since 1978, he seems to have improved in complementing them as the years went by. In this year of touring, particularly, he weaves around their wellstructured harmonizing in a very intriguing fashion. Listen to how he simply leaves aside vocalizing certain lines in "I & I" and "In The Garden," favoring instead the emphasizing of a final word or phrase. It's pretty interesting stuff, no doubt. One technical note I have spliced out the lengthy repetition of the chorus phrase at the conclusion of “I & I.” According to Olof Bjorner’s website, a few days earlier “sees my face and lives” was repeated 56 times! You can’t hear the splice, but in case someone would prefer a purer version, and unshortened version is included as bonus material alongside the art and notes.

Though the 1980s material is emphasized, Bob Dylan's 1960s songs are present here as well. "All Along The Watchtower" is featured in a fairly unique slow arrangement that sounds a bit similar to "When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky." "I Dreamed I Saw Saint Augustine" is an absolutely beautiful rendition, as is the acoustic "One Too Many Mornings." Paul Williams described the singer as having seemingly dedicated himself fully to performances of "One Too Many Mornings" on this summer tour, and it's hard to argue with that assessment. Interestingly, this would essentially mark the end of Bob Dylan's solo acoustic performances, since from 1988 his acoustic sets featured, at minimum, one additional guitarist. Finally, "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" is a notable oneoff from the 1986 tour. If you listen closely, you can actually hear Dylan calling out the chords during the song's opening. Unsurprisingly, it comes off a bit underrehearsed, but is a beguiling performance nonetheless. It's one of my favorite songs, so I was glad to hear that it was played at least once with the Heartbreakers.

A few more covers round out the set. "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know," which was recorded for and published on Self Portrait in 1970, appeared with regularity on this tour. It works largely due to Tom Petty's subtle harmony on the title line. "House Of The Rising Sun" is also presented here in a rare outing. It would go on to be played less successfully in 1987, but here it is simply sublime. Though it is not present on this edit, after playing the song Bob Dylan explained to the extremely receptive New York City crowd that the band was into overtime and could not keep playing! They certainly earned a break, having played a full 23 songs that night.

Please note that a handful of absolutely wonderful songs are not present on this set, but are available elsewhere in the Thousand Highways Collection. In particular, "Lucky Old Sun" is on the One More Night compilation, and "Emotionally Yours," "Across The Borderline," "We Had It All," and "Lonesome Town" can be found on Ashes & Dust: 1985 1986.

I hope you enjoy the set. Having not enjoyed the 1986 shows for a long time, I was converted by the Wasteland Of Your Mind compilation, created by Expecting Rain member Nellie. While a fair number of recordings from this year suffer from being performed in the early days of digital recording and feature a rather harsh, metallic sound, it is possible to find some rather outstanding tapes; I like to think that A Voice Without Restraint presents the best of this material. Thanks, CS

'TIL I FELL IN LOVE WITH YOU (11-20)
POSITIVELY 4TH STREET (11-22)
LONDON CALLING (11-21)
VISIONS OF JOHANNA (11-21)

Of course, we all know about Brixton 2005. One of the high points of Bob Dylan's late career. Five nights of songs, old and new, pulled from the fiery furnace and refined in the chilly London air. Like his brilliant Fall 2003 tour, the Fall 2005 tour culminated in amazing performances on the British Isles. All of these songs are sourced from Crystal Cat's “Brixton Box” Set, and the CD is arranged to present the best of the 5 nights. The tracks are a bit hot, tending towards clipped high and low ends, but the quality rarely suffers.

Our evening opens with a rollicking "Maggie's Farm" before a tender "Sugar Baby" pulls back on the energy, and then a joyful performance of "Million Dollar Bash" brings the audience and Dylan to laughter by the end. "High Water" turns up the heat, pedal steel melodies propel "She Belongs To Me," and "Shelter from the Storm" is played for all its drama. Possibly the strongest rendition of the march-like arrangment of "It's Alright Ma" is up next. Then one of the only airings of "Waiting For You" before 2013 – each word is drawn out to perfection. We are surprised again with Bob Dylan's only performance to date of Blue Monday.  The violin brings out every ounce of sorrow present in "Boots of Spanish Leather," and the long-burning "'Til I Fell in Love With You" brings us around to a sad, longing "Positively 4th Street." After a brief, delightful cover of The Clash's "London Calling," the serene "Visions of Johanna" concludes this set. It's not quite as strong as its nigh-definitive reading in Dublin mere nights later, but this "Visions of Johanna" plays to the qualities of Bob Dylan's tight 2005 band.

This is one of the last appearances of such a jazzy sound in Dylan's repertoire until 2012, and 2006 would bring both the organ and an increasingly hard, bluesy sound to the forefront. The songs here are light, airy, somehow managing to sound simultaneously loose yet well-rehearsed. This is a band at one of its peaks, creating beautiful music for an adoring crowd. Perhaps some personal favorites are missing, but the 14 tracks give a representative look into the Bob Dylan of 2005. If 2003 was the beginning of this sound, then 2005 is the conclusion. If you find this set to your liking, and want more, download the complete Brixton Box. As always, enjoy!

Neil Young + POTR Rebel Content Tour 2015 Compilation

Here is a great compilation I recently received from Rust list members. Compiled by Ron Yaxley(REYaxley).

All files in FLAC format.
Text below from Rons original e-mail.
In the recent Rolling Stone article about Neil and Promise of The Real finishing off their second album for release in June, Neil is quoted as saying "It's like a live show, but it's not like a live show..... It's not conventional ... but it is based on live performance."

While we eagerly wait for that new album, there is still nothing like a Neil Young live show. The vast majority of the Rebel Content shows in the USA and Canada in 2015 were captured by tapers and uploaded to Dime so it was perhaps inevitable that a live comp would probably appear before too long.

The origins of this comp lie with Tom Zumafan and Soldier Steve who between them put together a 6-CD compilation of their favourite tracks from the Rebel Content tour. It wasn't widely circulated or publicised but it existed. During the last few weeks, I have had the pleasure of working with Tom and Steve to 'remaster' the original with the objective of turning it into six continuous live albums. Tracks have been edited and merged as best I could from the individual files to make it sound like one long concert. Some of the original cuts were changed for different versions that lent themselves better to track-to-track transition, and the original order of the tracks was also changed in places to make them fit together better. Every song played on the tour is covered here bar one, Rockin' In The Free World....it was played twice but no decent recordings have surfaced unfortunately. To quote a Neil song from 1985, nothing is perfect and what has been created is only as good as all of the source material.
It was challenging editing different shows together but we think it worked and it sounds pretty damn good!
It was great fun working on this, so my grateful thanks to Tom and Steve for their generosity, their patience while all of this was being put together, and their unqualified approval of the end result.

So, 62 songs, over 6 hours of Neil + POTR live. Enjoy!

Ron
