Here's something that has never been circulated and I think any die-hard Petty fan will want this.

The master tape is most likely gone forever and this 1st gen is the only other copy known to exist.

After nearly 37 years this tape is finally seeing the light of day.

That being said, this one is noticeably distant and a bit rough in sound quality

This was a big 5 day event, with many big names.  It's all been well documented on film.

Except 1 performer didn't want the film from his band to be released to be used and seen by the public.

Tom Petty flatly refused to let any footage be used.

From what I understand, there hasn't been any leaked video footage of Petty's set.

Which makes this audience recording even more important and that's why it's here today.

Following the March 1979 meltdown at Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island nuclear reactor.

Jackson Browne, Graham Nash, Bonnie Raitt and others joined forces to found the activist group Musicians United for Safe Energy.

Raising awareness of safe energy alternatives and advocating against the use of nuclear energy,

MUSE would stage a monumental 5 nights at Madison Square Garden from Sept 19 - 23.

Tom Petty - lead vocals, guitar, harmonica
Ron Blair - bass
Mike Campbell - guitar, vocals
Stan Lynch - drums, vocals
Benmont Tench - keyboards, vocals

Recording notes:

"American Girl" has a couple quick dropouts after the 3:25 mark.

The sound is noticeably distant and only marginally clear. I think it's a fine performance

This event was important for the time.  I think any Petty will enjoy this pre-1980 show.

I've included a scan of the j-card, cassette and t-shirt inside the torrent.
