Source #1 (main): Genexxa 33-3007 electret unidirectional condenser microphones (retagged Shure Prologue 16L's) in backpack pockets on lap > custom XLR-to-1/8" mini jack > Sony MZ-R70 MD recording walkman (atrac compression, manual record levels set fairly low) flat transfer with minor volume tweaks

Source #2 (patches): Apex 162 stereo mini condenser microphone mounted in hat > Radio Shack 6 foot gold 1/8" mini extension > Sony MZ-R37 MD recording walkman (atrac compression, auto record levels) processed in Wavelab 5.01b (level balance and boost, 25% X-ternalizer, 20% stereo expander, spectralizer custom preset, limiter)

Recording location: Section 306 (side stage left, or the right side if facing stage) a few rows up and closer to the front than the back. See the YouTube video to see my angle! Here's a clip of the end of the show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFv4kSMJ9ek

Transfer: Playback of all MD masters from MZ-R37 line audio output > Gold Radio Shack 1/8" mini-to-rca jacks > gold Radio Shack rca-to-1/4" plug adapters > Echo Gina24 24/96 Multitrack recording audio interface > Wavelab 5.01b recording at 24 bit 48 khz sample rate to be used for audio source of the future DVD video that my friend shot. He filmed the whole show with a MiniDV camera. Eventually I will be transferring and authoring a DVD from his video with this audio, but I have no plans to do that right now.

Editing: I had to raise the levels in Wavelab on the first few songs of the main source that had misadjusted record levels, and crossfaded to the second source for a brief moment at the end of "Running With The Devil" until the beginning of "Romeo Delight" to patch the spot where I had to physically pause the main deck to manually raise the recording levels on it. There is a longer patch that I crossfaded to at the end of "Hot For Teacher" through the first 45 seconds of "Little Dreamer" due to a main deck MD swap in progress. I tried to process the second vastly inferior patch source to sound more like the main source. In reality it sounds nothing like the main source and is far worse with distortion and auto-limiting mic level compression. The main source is unaltered except for the small level adjustment. Tracks split in Wavelab on exact second marks to prevent any sector boundary errors. I made 2 versions of the pre-show intro for you: one has a slow fade to hide the mono signal and set-up noises while one is left raw. The pre-show "porn music" and post-show walk-out could be discarded if you like...

Redbook CD version: Downsampled and dithered from 24bit 48 kHz to 16 bit 44.1 kHz with the SoX ReSampler via Foobar2000 for resampling from 48 khz to 44.1 khz (passband 95.2% disabled aliasing 25% phase response very high quality) > iZotope RX advanced for dithering from 24 bit to 16 bit (MBIT+ ultra noise shaping normal dither)

Audioarchivist notes: This show was on my 40th birthday. I figured there's no better way to enter my 40's than to see a bunch of 50-something year old dudes (except for the teenage Wolfgang) still rocking out! We had to get scalper tickets, and with the place so sold out and demand (and prices) high, we had no choice but to sit up beside the stage on the right. I figured I'd get a crap recording, but the fold around PA system speakers were pointing right at us (and close, too!) so it sounds pretty good. I was there with my flimer friend right beside me. His camera is broken now, so there's no real plans to transfer his tapes anytime soon. Eventually we'll get a new camera and I'll be authoring a DVD of the show with my audio as well as his camera sound, and maybe with some alternate camera footage if I can still track it down (there's so many YouTube clips from the show posted!) but like I say, there's no real hurry, and plenty of other shows to keep busy with!

I've been told that around this time, Eddie was testing out a new guitar that he designed. Actually IIRC he was testing several variations of it during the tour, and during this week he had settled on one design specifically, possibly even at this show! The solo is a bit longer and more experimental at this show than others, but I'll leave it to "the experts" to figure that out for sure.

I can't find my ticket stub to include it in this torrent right now, and I haven't made any artworx for the CD release. If you make some cool photoshopish coverart for this, please post it, and could you also email it to me? Thanks. Pictures or links to reviews? Let me (and everyone else) know and post them! Also, if you have or know of any good quality master video of the show that I could get a copy of, I'd really appreciate it. Like I said, my friend shot the show from side stage complete, but I'd love to be able to edit a multicam version when I get it done. I'll give proper credit where its due, and be able to give you raw and finished versions of the DVD for your time and trouble. No hurries, no worries.

I had a blast at this show. Awesome birthday present!!! For all the shows I've seen through the years, I've never been to a concert on my birthday before this. Good times. I kind of can't believe I got away with recording the show! At the time I had extra long hair and a longer beard, looking more like a member of the Taliban regime or somehing. After the show, me and my filming buddy went to visit some friends from out-of-town at the hotel. I played them some of the recording, and when they asked what I'd recorded with, I pulled out these two big black microphones. They all start laughing, and Loran yells "Dynamite!!!" - what a blast! An explosive concert. Boom!

Again, any art should be posted (and emailed, please) and sources of alternative video would be welcomed, too. Please get in touch!
