Jethro Tull 1979-11-16 Santa Monica Civic Auditorium Santa Monica, CA(FM)

Jethro Tull - "UNICEF Re-do"
Santa Monica Civic Auditorium
Santa Monica, CA
November 16, 1979

UNICEF Benefit Show - recorded and broadcast on KMET-FM, its reported (Ian mentions during show also).

Source: SBD > KMET-FM > ? > CDRs > EAC(secure) > WAV > FLAC - downloaded from DIME

Excellent show and recording but this really needed a little bit of work. I'm suprised no one had
cleaned this up - I've not seen any other versions. I'm not so sure this was recorded from FM radio,
it sounds better than that. Maybe its a generated SBD? It's weird that nothing better has surfaced
by now if that was the case, so who knows. Listening on head phones, you can hear folks talking
during some of the songs (faintly though), but I can't believe this is an AUD. Must be near the mics
or something...

Thanks to "whomever" for sourcing it.

EDITS:
I took the flacs, converted to WAV, then put the show back together as one complete file and went to
work. I went and balanced the channels for each song or section of quiet songs since each track
seemed to have balancing issues of different degrees and sometimes in OPPOSITE directions. Most of
the time, the left channel needed bumped but the amount of bump varied. After that, I amplified
the very quiet songs about 3db - tracks 5, 6, 12 and the quiet bits of TaaB. Compared to the loud
parts, these were extremely quiet. I ran a small amount of EQ on the entire file, bumping the low
end and the mids, but not too extreme, enough I think to make it sound a little punchier and the
mids a bit brighter (vocals and guitar). This also enhanced the stereo image IMO. After the EQ,
there was really no need to bump the overall volume, the WAV looked *good*.

Now, does it sound any better?

Moderately - since I am no audio engineer and generally won't take too much credit for anything.
However, we do have some other benefits from this exercise...proper tracking and sound drops/cuts
are eliminated!! There were numerous complete sound drops (silence) that I cleaned up and some tracks
were not properly split up or even split at all, including the original One Brown Mouse being a 15 min
tour-de-force...NOT...this actually included No Lullaby and the Flute Solo. I did find some interview
material from around this time that I tagged on this. I took the choice sections from the BBC Lively Arts
Doc 1979, the first part covering aspects of the early days and touring and the later bits covered the
recording of the Stormwatch album, specifically "Dark Ages" (with alternate lyric). This was the doc that
had the Seattle 1979 live footage in it, which I did not include here.

This show did have a slightly expanded setlist when compared with the other sets around this time.
Wond'ring Aloud and One Brown Mouse were added to the setlist for this show.
