Notes:

THE GENE POOLE COLLECTION VOL. 87

Here's the latest installment of the Gene Poole Collection, a random wellspring of recordings which have recently surfaced. To paraphrase Lou: This is gonna go on for a while, so we should get used to each other, settle back, pull up your cushions, whatever else you have with you that makes life bearable in what has already been the start of trying decade...

Some of Gene's handiwork has probably been heard by your very ears before, for the most part via the Stonecutter Archives, but this is the first major unearthing of tapes direct from the legend himself. As promising as that may seem, it's best to let the surprises hit as they are shared. The trade-off to the prolific taping on Gene's part is that the expectations for a perfect track record would be unrealistic and unfair. There will be instances of incomplete recordings, caused by late arrivals to gigs, recorder and mic malfunctions, and other assorted foibles as would befall any mortal taper. There will be times where a master from another source exists which could be superior. For the most part, Gene recorded with a variety of mics and recorders, and many shows suffered from wire dropouts, so that only one channel was extant in the capture. Due warning about the past imperfect given and out of the way, credit should be given where due as well -- for many shows thought lost forever, it's exciting to discover that many of these even in incomplete form have now cropped up.

The transfers, the audio fixes, and the research all have required some lead time -- many tapes had scant info (sometimes just the name of the artist/band, with no date listed for the performance). Needless to say, gear documentation is virtually nil -- if we wait around for that precise detail to be forthcoming, nothing from the collection would probably see the light of day.

We're going back to the Palladium again this time, for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' final night of a three-night stand there. As with the prior two nights, Tommy Tutone opened. Tickets were $10.00 to $12.50.

Unlike the anomaly of the last part of the previous night's recording, this one is a dedicated in-line dub, no re-recording involved. The recorder used seems to faintly pick up a stereo signal, but overall it has more of a clear mono sound. This one also comes off a salvaged tape, misleadingly labeled "Jerry Garcia - Live at The Palladium, Nov 27, 1977 7:00 P.M.," then crossed off and re-labeled: "Patti Smith at the Anderson 12/31/77 #1." Neither of those were on the tape, just this unlabeled Tom Petty show.

There are edits between most tracks on this tape, with one cut near the end of "Too Much Ain't Enough." Sources for the first two nights are in circulation, but it seems there hasn't been a source that's turned up until now for this third night. Gene seems to recall that he attended these shows (not sure if just the last two or all three, but probably at least one more than Joni Mitchell did) and that Tom seemed to do almost the same exact shtick every night, down to his comments, which comparing to the prior volume, doesn't entire support Gene's memory. That said, the setlist for the first two nights were the same, and if that's applicable to this night, then the recording is missing "Even the Losers" between t05 and t06. "Dog on the Run" would likely have been played as the final song, but if so was not on the tape.

1980 was a tough year for the mainstream music industry, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers probably could have played a much larger venue in any other year, so this run of shows would have been a treat for his devoted East Coast following.

Enjoy,
elegymart

Lineage:

Unknown. Got it in trade.

Set List:

01. Jon Anderson Harp Solo
02. Heart of the Sunrise
03. Gates of Delirium
04. Roundabout
05. Sweet Dreams (jammed out version)

The full setlist according to Forgotten Yesterdays was:

Apocalypse
Siberian Khatru
Sound Chaser
I've Seen All Good People
Song Of Innocence
Hold Out Your Hand/You By My Side
Leaves Of Green
Clap
Long Distance Runaround/Moraz Solo
Harp Solo
Heart Of The Sunrise
Gates Of Delirium
Roundabout
Sweet Dreams

Recording Quality:

I'd give it a B-. It's reasonably crisp but there's a substantial amount of distortion.

Performance Quality:

About average for the beginning of the Solo Albums tour, except for Sweet Dreams which is jammed out and quite unusual. It was the fifth show of the tour and they had already dropped most of the solo material played the first two nights in Roanoke and Hampton, VA: Ram, Break Away From It All, Beginnings, One Way Rag, Alan White Solo, and Cachaca (Baiao).

Third year in a row for Billy Joe here in my town. This probably had the most

from the upcoming "Long In The Tooth". Funny, great stories as well. Sound is
fine. Samples below. Enjoy!

My version is only called « Boston 2003 »

This one seems not coming from an mp3 (see the specter in the artwork).

I find the sound not very good so I make a little treatment and the result, for my ears, is real better (take a look also at the specter in the artwork).
Amplification -3 + equalization

Others « bricolage » are
-    CD1 : Track 01, I cut the 6s gap at 27s
-    CD2 : track 1, begin by a « fade  in » that I improve but a little blip remains

« Stray Cat Blues » appears also in the WLR box n°6218 « Forty Licks » (CD n°12, track 7) I prefer my version but I added here as a bonus at the end of CD n°2.

So it’s another of my DIY so another Frankenstein production!!!

Not much of review to give you on this one... sound in the hall was complete sheit, at least to my 62-year-old ears. I actually enjoyed the show more listening to my capture on the ride home, as I could actually make out Bob's vocals much clearer than live for whatever reason.

Tired, old auditorium with tired, old sound set-up.. the mix sounded so bad (to me) that I could barely hear any separation on the players, and it all just sounded really thin. But again, I do think that I was able to pull a decent capture here and the crowd certainly did it's part by staying attentive during the music so that's a plus as well.

Was seeing Bob for my 23rd time and this one was very special because my oldest daughter drove up from Columbia, SC to see her first Bob show with me.. which is a long way from our first show together about 15 years ago (The Jonas Brothers, with Demi Lovato opening)...

Bob stayed pretty much "hidden" from view the entire evening.. venturing out from behind his piano maybe 3 times to stand for a moment next to said piano, then quickly back to his position at the keys. There were two large water bottles strategically positioned on his piano that basically blocked the view from our seats of Bob's head when he was singing.

But the performance itself was as naked and poignant as I can remember from Bob, and he is still giving it his all as best he can as an almost 81-year-old man who has been on tour forever it seems.  To my eyes, the physical presence of Bob was much less out front since the last time I saw him in November of 2019... Alas, time waits for no man, not even the timeless Bob Dylan...

As for the band, there were very few instances where anyone stood out.. I particularly enjoy Bob Britt's acoustic solo during Masterpiece. I was also intrigued by the several times you will hear Bob interjecting off-hand comments during and between songs.. but I could not tell to whom exactly he was talking to .. his band, his audience, or some voices only Bob can hear..

Setlist (really?!):

The same 17 songs as the night before, and the nights before that show, too.

As always, do whatever you want with this capture except sell it because that ain't cool.. Your comments are always appreciated!

Enjoy!

Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity. In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes. He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings. In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.

He recorded many of the major 70's bands: Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar" acts.

Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.

Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community. Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.

JEMS is thrilled to commence our partnership with longtime Southern California taper Barry G with this previously uncirculated and undocumented Queen master tape from the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Barry began taping in the early ‘70s and has been active ever since, though his later work focused more on video than audio. In his heyday, Barry was a dual threat, not only recording the shows he attended but photographing too with impressive results.

Beyond his own recording, Barry was a close friend of the late Mike “The Mike” Millard, attending many concerts with him and helping Mike make his recordings. Like Jim R, Barry has shared with JEMS some Mike the Mic recordings not in general circulation which will be part of our continuing Lost and Found Mike the Mic series down the road. But before we get to those, we have a great Queen artifact to bring forth.

Barry caught Queen on their third U.S. tour in support of A Night At The Opera. The band would play four shows over three nights in Santa Monica according to the Ultimate Queen website, playing early and late shows on the 9th, plus shows on the 10th and 11th, with this the closing set of the four. While Barry was not using Millard-caliber equipment, his recordings are a material step up from many of the built-in mic cassette captures of the era. There’s slight distortion when the levels get hot, but the recording is otherwise close, clear and lively. Samples provided. Barry says he sat in Orchestra C, Row 15.

Given there are only three extant recordings of the 1976 U.S. tour, Barry’s Santa Monica document is a major find for Queen fans. The performance is equally appealing with lots of Freddie Mercury audience interaction and peak band performance.

Barry is putting his deep archive of audio, video and photographic goodies into a website called Barry Goldstein Concert Closet. The old site is still out there on the web and a new and improved site is on the way.

JEMS wants to thank Barry G for trusting us with his incredible work, both audio and photo, and for deciding now was the time to share that work widely with fans. Please let him know how much you appreciate it in the comments. Of course, these shows would all be stuck on hard drives if it wasn’t for the work of mjk5510. As always, we couldn’t do it without you.

This one it’s from the same source and for the quality the difference is small ! I find the sound too much muddy, I make a little egalisation and the result is real better to my ears.(see the comparison in the artwork file and compar by yourself if you got the other version).
Here my other modifications

Amplification : -1db + egalisation (see the artwork file)

CD1 :
Track 01 : I cut the big gaps of 5s in the beginning,  the gap at 52s, 1’34 & 1’36 (for this one a default stay but more discreet).
Track 08 : a big noise and a gap at 25s, another big at 51s (because the gap is big a « decalage » stays ).

CD2 :
Track 01 : I re-use the end of CD1 to make a better start for the track
Track 03 : I cut the gap at 3’28
Track 04 : big noise & gap at 4’02
Track 05 : big noises & gap at 3’46, 3’47, 3’48, 4’06
Track 06 : beginning of HTW is lost, I make a fade in to make it better

Last track « JJF » is cut after 0’28s, so I use the mp3 version to complete the track (I only hope it’s also coming from the Hartford show)
I also added, out from the file, the « original » version of JJF so you can choose what you want to keep and decided if you find my version upgraded or not.
The title « The Hartford Renegades » is coming from my great friend « mr No » that create the first version of the artwork.

Because I modifie the cd I re-create an artwork.

So here finally another of my mix/frankenstein puzzle, I like the result and I hope some will like it too, for the others you only had to pass your way and don’t step on my toes.

Thanks Everybody! That's about the only song in my repertoire that's got Cleveland in it.
Is there a president by that name too ??? (after Pancho And Lefty).

Thank you everybody! This is off my latest hit record. It's my ecology song. All about fishing. (before Wiggle Wiggle).

Thank you everybody! That's a true story right there! So few things you hear today are true.
Anyway, that was one thing that was definitely true. (after The Two Brothers).

Thank you everybody! That's an old Johnny Cash song there. You've a rock'n'roll museum in this city, right here.

Johnny Cash is not in it. There shouldn't really be one. (after Folsom Prison Blues).

Thanks everybody! This is my favorite song for the moment! (before Ballad Of A Thin Man).

4 new songs (22%) compared to previous concert. 1 new song for this tour.

Geetarz Comments:

There are (at least) two different audience recordings of this show in circulation. This one is distinguished from the crystal clarity of the Final Chapter release of this show by a more warm, analog feel. This recording also has perhaps a tad more crowd noise. Quality wise it's a tie between the two, both are excellent recordings - in this case it's more a personal preference than anything else. Disc times for this release are 56:35 / 64:37.

Lineage:

The transfers are available as 16bit/44.1KHz flac files suitable for CD burning, and also as 24bit/96KHz flac files for those who prefer the higher resolution.

Yes 1976-05-28 Civic Center Roanoke, VA

Recorded in Roanoke, VA, May 28, 1976. First concert of the "solos" tour, and the setlist included a lot of
material from the 5 solo albums. It changed a lot as the tour progressed, too.

Disc One:
1) Apocalypse
2) Siberian Khatru
3) I've Seen All Good People
4) Ram (fades in)
5) Hold Out Your Hand/You By My Side
6) Roundabout
7) Break Away From It All
8) Beginnings
9) One Way Rag
10)White Solo
11)(segues into) Song Of Innocence
12)Cachaca (Baiao)
13)(segues into) Soundchaser

Disc Two:
1) Harp Solo
2) Heart Of The Sunrise
3) Sweet Dreams

Bonus tracks:
4) The Gates of Delirium, recorded in Nashville, TN June 1, 1976. Solid performance and a great recording - a
really good audience tape. The Nashville tape is incomplete, and sort of an orphan. Since the Roanoke show did
not include Gates, I added it (per JB's suggestion, and he supplied the tapes.)

5) The Remembering, recorded in rehearsal at Millersville, PA, sometime in May 1976. Seems they hadn't forgotten
this Tale after all. Forgotten... Remembering... get it? Never mind.

All tracks feature Patrick Moraz on keyboards and have benefited from liberal doses of noise reduction and
equalization.
