Comments:

This is my original late 90's transfer of twenty Byrds shows from 1970 that I did for their then road manager.  Some of these leaked out, some ended up on YouTube, and some were even bootlegged.  Those other versions may include editing, EQ, and other "mastering"; this is the raw transfer.

The master cassette was labeled as "Norfolk".

JEMS is thrilled to continue our partnership with longtime Southern California taper Barry Goldstein. Barry began taping in the early ‘70s and has been active ever since, though his later work focused more on video than audio. In his heyday, Barry was a dual threat, recording the shows he attended and photographing too with impressive results.

His master tapes circa 1973-83 include previously uncirculated shows and recordings of David Bowie, Genesis, Roxy Music, Fleetwood Mac, Rory Gallagher, Eric Clapton, Supertramp, The Who and others.

Beyond his own captures, Barry was a close friend of the late, great Mike “The Mike” Millard, attending many concerts with him as well as recording nights and concerts Mike didn't cover. Like Jim R, Barry shared Mike the Mike tapes with JEMS that are not in general circulation for our continuing Lost and Found series.

The fourth release in the series is a special one indeed as a previously uncirculated David Bowie performance, the last night of a seven-show run at the Universal Amphitheatre in 1974 that kicked off the second North American leg dubbed The Soul/Philly Dogs tour.

Soul/Philly Dogs expanded the band line-up with five extra back-up singers (notably including Ava Cherry and Luther Vandross), the departure of Michael Kamen on keyboards, and the arrival of Carlos Alomar on rhythm guitar, along with the new rhythm section of Doug Rauch on bass and Greg Errico on drums.

In addition to showcasing a number of songs from Diamond Dogs and Aladdin Sane, plus tasty older cuts like "Space Oddity," "Changes" and "Suffragette City," the set features the Bowie-penned Mott The Hoople hit "All The Young Dudes," the future Young Americans outtake "It's Gonna Be Me" and the remade and remodeled "John, I'm Only Dancing (Again)." A cover of Eddie Floyd's "Knock On Wood" also features, but unfortunately the song gets cut on a tape flip.

That cut and a couple of spots of close talkers aside, Barry's recording is remarkable for the era offering full, up-close sound, almost no hiss or noise and clear fidelity not heard in many recordings from this era. Samples provided. Barry's still using the same self-contained Sony recorder and getting great results, thanks in no small part a great seat in section nine, close to the PA on the side.

We believe this to be the first recording of this show to ever surface and as such adds another great piece of history to Bowie's recorded concert history. Eight days later, Mike Millard would record the same tour at the Anaheim Convention Center (Vol. 31 in the Lost and Found series), but Barry's recording is the superior document.

JEMS thanks Barry for trusting us with his incredible audio, video and photographic work (his photo from the show is featured on the included cover art), and for deciding now was the time to share that work widely with fans. Please let him know how much you appreciate it in the comments.

Of course, these shows wouldn't be uploaded and downloaded if it wasn’t for the contributions of mjk5510. As always, we couldn’t do it without him. Shout outs as well to Professor Goody for his pitch prescription and to the Genesis Museum for their outstanding, on-going efforts to make high resolution scans of vintage negatives, slides and film taken by pioneers like Barry Goldstein.

We look forward to sharing more of Barry's master recordings in 2024.

ARW 2018-06-12 City Hall Newcastle upon Tyne, UK

Yes Featuring Anderson Rabin Wakeman
Quintessential YES 50th Anniversary Tour
City Hall
Newcastle upon Tyne
Uk
2018-06-12

Following seeing the "other" outfit bearing a similar name earlier in the year, my appetite was whetted for the arrival of this version.  Most people have their preference as to which is for them.  Both have their features, both have their faults, but, importantly, both have the capacity to take you somewhere special.
I prefer this version, but nothing I say at this point is going to change anyone's mind one way or another, so I'll go no further in that respect.  Someone once told me "opinions are like arseholes.  Everyone's got one, but most of the time they're best kept private".

If the City Hall wasn't sold out then it must have been very close to being.  A bit of a crackle in the air, it wasn't short on atmosphere.  Three video screens at the back (deja vu all over again?), banks of keyboards to the right, drums to the back left & a few amps & mics in between, all shrouded in just enough dry ice to create an air of expectancy without risk of causing respiritory issues with the audience of "a certain age".

This time around there was to be two sets, split with a 30 minute interval.  No support.

Both sets were based around YES "classics", seasoned with "newer" stuff (post 1980).
Whatever your prejudices band or material wise, this is a class act.
Jon's just "high on life" - a happier, hippier person you'll struggle to find, and it's infectious. He IS the voice of YES.

Rick, an imposing figure, repleat with glittery cloak and tongue firmly in cheek to match - a MASTER in curmudgeonly keyboard playing.  Wonderful, wonderful musician, and great to hear the old-school, analogue MOOGs getting an outing.

Whilst Trevor adds a different seasoning to the older YES numbers, they still sound like..YES.  Doesn't pick up an acoustic instruments throughout, but...whilst everyone has their favourite YES guitarist, there were no detractors judging by the smiles and general good vibes that prevailed even beyond the show's conclusion.

I read a comment many years ago on another YES torrent along the lines of "not only is Awaken the best piece of music by YES, but it's the best piece of music - period".  If tonight's anything to go by, even if I don't agree then I can see where he's coming from.  It's huge - bewildering, meandering, captivating...an experience.

Anyway, sit yourself down in a darkened room, put on your headphones and you be the judge.

Everyone there enjoyed the following:

S101 Intro
S102 Cinema
S103 Hold On
S104 South Side Of The Sky
S105 I've Seen All Good People
S106 And You And I
S107 Changes
S108 Rhythm Of Love

I N T E R V A L

S201 I Am Waiting
S202 Heart Of The Sunrise
S203 Awaken
S204 Owner Of A Lonely Heart
S205 Encore Break
S206 Roundabout

The Band:

Jon Anderson - vocals, guitar, harp, percussion
Rick Wakeman - keyboards, keytar
Trevor Rabin - guitar, vocals, percussion
Iain Hornal - bass, backing vocals
Louis Molino III - drums, backing vocals

None of us are getting any younger, including the band.  See them while you can & say "thank you" by buying their music in order to top up their pension funds...

Live review: BĂ©la Fleck’s “Africa Project” at the Boulder TheaterBy Jason Blevins and Nathan Rist:

BĂ©la Fleck has mastered all sounds on his banjo. The other-worldly maestro can meld his twangy
instrument with virtually every genre of music. So it makes perfect sense that the perpetually
innovative master of the American banjo would eventually wander into Africa, where that percussive
lute was born more than 2,000 years ago.

Fleck has not only returned with new styles, techniques and sounds that earned him two Grammy awards
last week. He’s brought the best of Africa back with him. Before a capacity crowd at the
Boulder Theater last night, Fleck’s Africa Project shuttled a rapt audience deep into the rich
musical landscapes of Africa.

Starting with a reflective, improvised display of his African aptitude, Fleck’s metallic banjo cast
a dancing shimmer on the theater walls. He invited thumb piano player Anania Ngoliga and guitarist
John Kitime to join him and soon, the room was awash in a lyrical Tanzanian dance.

Ngoliga, a multi-instrumental master of Tanzania’s Gogo music, is blind and he sits virtually
motionless with his hands tucked inside a sort of acoustic bread box. His tinkling on the thumb piano
harkens the bubbly sound of rain on a tin roof, or a particularly poppy steel drum. His virtuosity
gives the modest instrument both a melodic and percussive role.

Coupled with the caressing backdrop of Kitime’s acoustic guitar, the duo was mesmerizing. Fleck joined
the Tanzanian musicians for a couple songs, including Ngoliga’s high-pitched, comically clucking and
clacking song “Kabibi.”

Fleck and his “Africa Project” entourage of a dozen musicians are touring 33 cities in support of
Fleck’s self-released “Throw Down Your Heart: Africa Sessions Part 2.” Last year’s
“Throw Down Your Heart” won Fleck his 12th and 13th Grammy Awards, for
Best Contemporary World Music Album and Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Those awards also mark the
10th and 11th musical category for Fleck, a spectrum that includes classical crossover, spoken word
and contemporary jazz. No one knows the banjo like BĂ©la.

If Fleck does have a rival on banjo, it is Bassekou Kouyate, the captain of Malian sensation Ngoni Ba,
the first ever all-ngoni band. The ngoni is a plucked chordophone that looks like a ukulele but
sounds like a banjo. Kouyate, as a young man, was the first to ever sling the ngoni around his neck
and play it standing up, defying tradition. Today, his band Ngoni Ba is pioneering a new generation
of ngoni sound. Fleck introduced his Malian peer as the greatest to ever play the ngoni in the
instrument’s 2,000 year history.

High praise from the American king and oh, what a sound. Backed by two gourd-slapping percussionists
and a soulful, bellowing singer, the four ngoni players — all family members capable of Four Tops-style
choreographed moves in formal African garb — delivered a decadently rich, nimble and haunting display.
Kouyate, treading lightly on a wah-wah, conjured Frampton-esque moments between adroit plucking.
When joined by Fleck, the two redefined forever — at least in my mind — the hillbilly notion of dueling
banjos. That old school sound is a toddler’s shoving match. Fleck and Kouyate take the duel to
World War level.

Fleck took a second spin with an improvised solo on his cello banjo, picking along the stem to create
an exotic sound. He would turn the tuning pegs as he plucked, building a warm, hovering, wavelike tone
that easily conjured some dusty African market, far from anything Western. Others would wander out and
join Fleck for swimmingly intricate tunes. There was buoyant Tanzanian bluegrass, with Casey Driessen
on fiddle. When Ngoliga jumped in with his thumb piano, the sound swerved into African-Caribbean-Zydeco
bluegrass.

Kouyate and his crew arrived and Ngoliga led the stage in an African blues tune, his voice like
Muddy Waters on the banks of the Nile. By the second encore, the band was deep into ambient
“TanzMalican” grooves, with five banjos, a thumb pianist, a fiddler, an acoustic guitarist,
two gourd drummers and an African singer. It was a musical moment that won’t be forgotten.

Neil Young 2008-02-12 Stadsschouwburg Antwerpen (BE)

Artist:  Neil Young w./ Rick Rosas, Ben Keith, Ralph Molina, Anthony Crawford & Pegi Young

Venue: Stadsschouwburg
City: Antwerpen (BE)
Date: 2008-02-12

It was this evening Neil at his best, I think the acoustic set didn't start as good as the previous evening, but the song selection changed everything!
Neil was talkative inbetween songs and in a good mood.

included in the acoustic set are:

Try: first performance ever in Europe
This song was introduced during the American Continental tour after someone in Portland called for a song, Neil replied something and an other person in the audience said in a response "Try it". On which Neil replied: "That's a good one, and asked someone aside of the stage to write it down" Obviously Neil only heard Try (instead of Try it) A couple of shows later the song which was only known by it's title was introduced in the set.

Cowgirl In The Sand:
As far as I know this song was only played in Europe in the UK: both in 1973 during the Tonight's The Night Tour and in 1976 at the Hammersmth Odeon.
( The song I have been waiting for to hear live for more than 26 years.)

Final song of the evening:

The Sultan:
First performance ever in Europe, the song was played only a limited number of times during the US Continental tour.

Rockin'In The Free world: A song often played live since 1989, but was not played during the US Continental tour.

COMMENT

Certainly not the high point in Sabotage's vast array of releases, but a decent quality Love 4 One Another concert nonetheless. The audience are extremely vocal throughout the whole recording, and while they do add a nice appreciative atmosphere to the show, it is fair to say they are slightly distracting and overpowering at times. Whilst the recording is for the most part consistently very good, I do have to say that the second half of the show (Disc 2 onwards) sounds slightly thinner and less impressive than the first. All that said though, clean and clear recordings from this particular tour are almost impossible to find and whilst this is not as good as Sabotage's previous 'Atlanta 19th January 1997' release, it is still very enjoyable. The first half of the show is pretty straightforward and predictable with little in the way of surprises. Immediately proceeding the piano version of 'How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore' P plays an improvised song toying with the lack of response he is getting from the audience "Why don't you show a brother love?" however it's tongue in cheek and certainly not a swipe at the enthusiastic crowd. He indulges himself in (as he calls it) and "early birthday present" with a great version of 'The Ride' to close the main portion of the show. The encore section opens with a loose jam based around the lyrics to 'Girls & Boys' - Sabotage have listed this as a Goldaxxe jam, however P doesn't pick up the instrument during this part of the show. The only other interesting part of the show comes during 'I Feel Alright' where he leads the crowd through a chant around the phrase F.U.N.K.R.A.D.I.O. after he has complained about the radio stations lack of quality. It's interesting (to a fucking geekoid like me) because in June 1997 a brief 30 second sample of a track called 'Funk Radio' was aired on the Love4OneAnother website, and certainly bears some similarity to the jam performed here. Sabotage have added the 23 minute Paisley Park press conference which was held after the November 12th "Freedom Concert". The quality is very questionable, however it appears to have been taped in secret and is certainly one of the more interesting and funny interviews P gave at the time. For rarity value it's a nice addition to the release. Certainly this is not the best release circulating from this tour, and it's not Sabotage's best release of the tour either, however it is enjoyable, well packaged and worthy of a pressed release.

Notes:
Missing "Promised Land"
patched from gd73-10-27.sbd.wier.16583.sbeok.shnf -- funny thing is that this SBD source is also missing "Promised Land" has an unknown AUD source as a patch as well. :)

"Sugaree" is missing the first 20 seconds and is mono for the next 15 seconds, so the first 60 seconds is a matrix SBD-AUD patch using gd73-10-27.sbd.wier.16583.sbeok.shnf

There are a few songs that have the first notes clipped, as the recording deck was turned on and off to save tape. Left as is.

All other tape flips were patched with SBD as well.
Also note, the SBD source stops in the middle of "Wharf Rat", with the last three songs missing.

Recording Notes:
There are a few instances, especially during the early part of the first set that the drunks directly in front of decided they needed to talk. So there's some of that intermittently.

Screams, whoops and claps (that can't keep tempo with the music) have been removed and/or attenuated.

Mick Fleetwood joined the band for the encores playing drums during "Black Water" and Talking Drum for the remainder of the show. Patrick Simmons, Jr opened the show with his band and appeared with the Doobies on "Listen To The Music".

So as usual, take it if you need it, if you don't just pass it on.

WARNING
Not sure I should post this recording !
The only way to see Paul on stage was to be at the first row so I was against the stage but it is not the best place to record the show.
Because I was close to the guitar and as Paul had no more voice for the last show of the tour, you will barely not hear him, only the guitar and the drums.
Anyway, you can use it for your Karaoke :-)

“YesStorm”
35th Anniversary Remaster

Lineage: audience -> CDR -> EAC -> Sound Forge -> FLAC
Remastered by TheTooleMan 2002, 2007

Recently, someone asked for opinions on what would be the top 10 must-have Yes ROIO’s. On my list, this is definitely near the top. Good recording quality, a powerful performance, and Mother Nature’s fury all wrapped into 80 minutes.

This remarkable recording documents Yes summoning a strong thunderstorm on a summer’s afternoon. The clouds gather, thunder booms and rain pours as the band plays “And You And I” and “Heart of the Sunrise.” Natural rumblings augment Rick Wakeman’s synthesized bombing of London and the Hallelujah Chorus. Jon and Steve both seem at ease with the situation. Jon sings a bit of The Eagle’s hit “Take It Easy” (The Eagles were opening for Yes on this leg of the tour) and Steve chimes in with a few chords of “It Don’t Come Easy,” a hit for Ringo Starr during the same period. Jon also suggests that “everybody from the back come and sit on everybody's knee and we'll have a good time” while it rains. Whether or not that happened cannot be gathered from the recording, but the crowd never loses its enthusiasm for the music. By the time Yes returned to the stage for their encore, “Yours Is No Disgrace,” the clouds had parted and the rain ended.

What more could you want? Close to the Edge, perhaps, but that track had its live debut the next night in Hartford, CT.

All those names except Will Scarlet are listed on the poster, which says it was a benefit ($1 admission) - but doesn't say what the benefit was for! The poster calls this a "Rock Jam" and says it will be "Heavy". This used to circulate as "Unknown '67 from the Matrix". Jorma was asked and he does remember this.

Notes:

Through a fellow Soulseek user, I was recently made aware of an Instagram user who had made available master reels for this, and for the 1967-04-22 Ricky Tick show, which I have posted already. The best-sounding bootleg of this show - HEN's Blues Ancient and Modern - as well as, presumably, all other circulating copies of this show, are sourced from this reel, which is most likely one generation removed from Ian's tape, and the best we are likely to get. Apart from the Introduction, the dropouts and cuts found in all circulating versions are found on this master, sadly, as well as many other distracting artefacts. I present this unaltered, with the exception noted below.

From Wikipedia:

"Barbeque 67 was a music event held in the market town of Spalding, Lincolnshire, in the East Midlands of England. Despite the presence of many well-known artists among its lineup, the event remains largely unknown. It is considered by some to have been the first rock festival....Towards the end of 1966, Grantham promoter, former footballer Brian Thompson, set about booking Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band and The Move. Their management persuaded Thompson to also book three relatively unknown acts at that time, being Pink Floyd, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream.[1] The event was held in Spalding at the tulip bulb auction hall, most likely the largest building in the area that could hold a large crowd....Tickets cost just £1 and covered accommodation came in the form of the Spalding Town F.C. stand next door....The Spring Bank Holiday was sunny and hot, which would have been very uncomfortable in a large crowd inside a metal shed. The event appeared to be unorganised and the sound terrible....The two bands grouped under Psychedelic started, Pink Floyd and The Move, followed by the two Blues Rock groups, Jimi Hendrix and Cream....Hendrix had many issues, including tuning problems, was late on stage, meaning only a half-hour set, and finished by throwing his guitar into his speaker stack - the same red Stratocaster he would burn at Monterey the following month. It was widely agreed that Clapton out-played Hendrix that day....The event became a one off in Spalding due to opposition from local residents.....Whilst a groundbreaking event for its time in the Summer of Love ahead of the famous Monterey Pop Festival and possibly the first Rock music festival in the UK, the event remains largely unknown outside of its home.

This is the complete recording. The show was one set. The recording, as noted below, is plagued by problems caused by the PA, and contains multiple dropouts and artefacts. I have left the tape as-is, with one exception: immediately following the introduction is a long dropout followed by a brief burst of applause and a further dropout. I have isolated this as Track 02, so those choosing to do so can burn to CD with minimised annoyance. The transition will not be seamless but it's better than what's there presently. I have left the entire tape otherwise untouched, so anyone wishing to remaster it can do so. I received the recording as a single WAV files, and have made no other changes beyond tracking, tagging, downsampling, and FLAC conversion.

The reels were discovered by Clinton Heylin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinton_Heylin) whilst researching a book on bootleg recordings. The master transfer was done by Jeff Friedman (https://dylan.utulsa.edu/dylan80-collectors-roundtable/).

More information about this show and the festival can be found here: http://www.ukrockfestivals.com/spaulding-festival.html including (uncredited again!) Graeme's notes on the show

The Ricky Tick show from 1967-04-22 can be found here in CD Quality: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=765660
and here in 24/96: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=765667

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From his authoritative Cream web site: http://gpatt.customer.netspace.net.au/cream/ here are Graeme Pattingale's notes on the show:

"Ian Sippen set up his quality equipment to record Cream. He placed the mikes left and right stage, which was smal & semi-circular resulting in the drums being placed forward. Unfortunately the left mike failed and the recording is dominated by the guitar and the drums. The loss of bass is partially compensated for by the magnificent, very present sound of the drums. Jack's vocals are largely heard by direct acoustics rather then through the PA - what a set of lungs.
NSU is hesitant as they try to sort out the gear on the fly with the PA dropping out and the guitar amps being adjusted. Sunshine follows and is no better with Eric starting way too fast and pulling back, Eric & Ginger struggling to hear Jack and Ginger is laying down a very basic beat - one can see him glowering at the roadies as they desperately tried to sort things out. Things are better for a quite superb "We're Going Wrong", after Eric tells the audience to quiet down. A short "Stepping Out" is performed but with amp problems for Eric followed by "Rollin' & Tumblin" with a just audible harp and then "Toad" with very audible drums. "T'm So Glad" closes the set but by this time Eric's Marshall is really breaking up and he just manages to finish before it totally cracks up. It was a short set and they were glad to get away & leave it to the headliner.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My heartfelt thanks go to trailblazing concert taper Ian Sippen for being there, Soulseek user paisley for telling me about these recordings, Instagram user "Bernard Jenkins" for the tape, EC expert Geetarz for add'l source info, and the inestimable Graeme Pattingale, without whom Cream lore, history and scholarship would be a shadow of itself.
