U2 1984-11-09 Apollo Manchester, UK

LDB Special Series #178

Out of my 7,000+ shows and radio broadcasts, I have many concerts that were special for some reasons: the setlist, the
musicians, the venue or unexpected events. These are the ones I'd like to propose you. Most of these come from my
cassettes collection, so they will be released at a slower pace than my Master Series! But you won't be disappointed!
I will try to gather the most unusual things I have in my collection and, as always, your feedback and comments will be my
reward for all the work involved in this project.

DO NOT share this music on mp3, just convert it for your own use. Sharing mp3's is the right way to make me stop sharing
music here.

Nice little one, the first of two shows in Manchester. The first leg of TUF tour has always been one of my favourire U2 tour
and although I enjoyed the band very much a few months later in Milano on the same tour, I feel that the UK tour had
something more (although comparing a direct live experience with a recorded show isn't that fair!). Soundwise this is ok
and clear but do not expect perfection on this one (I would say 7 out of 10). This is notable for being the last performance
in UK for Indian Summer Sky which was played for the very last time a few months later in Milano. Overall, an enjoyable
show to celebrate the current 360° tour. Enjoy!

Additional Info regarding the lineage.
Appologies for the incomplete details in the lineage, however
this tape is probally a 2nd generation copy from the master
(at most a 3rd generation copy).
I'm confident in this as I was a friend of the original taper back
in the 80's who I got this from. He was a prolific taper in Glasgow
and Edinburgh, taped using what he called a Sony Pro (no mic details, sorry).
1st gen Copies where then made from the master and these were used to make
the copies which were sold on. This is one of the copies which he gave me.

I'm converting some of my old tapes to CD for my own benefit and do not have
profesional equipment, just my old tape deck and pc.
This tape has come across extremly well, quality is very good plus
(almost excellent). It does not suffer from major tape hiss.
I have not attempted to use noise reduction or EQ on the recording
and present it in it's raw state.
It's a brillant gig and you will not be disapointed if you download it.

Sound Quality:
Good audience. This recording is very good for an audience recording from 1984. All the frequencies are quite audible, as well as the bass and the high sounds. The audience reactions are well heard but it's not irritating. The music tops the audience.

Comments:
This is a very "rare" bootleg. To my knowledge only 25 were printed. The discs are gold colored, which could indicate that they are made on private CD-Rs. The disc printing is very plain; only black letters giving the name of the bootleg and the source. The back of the bootleg says it is made in Milano (Italy) but when I bought it the shop owner said that the distribution was only in the Netherlands. This bootleg came together with the Amsterdam 1989 show (also 25 copies). The cover is nice but single-sheeted. The back has the same background. Two pictures shot by Anton Corbijn during the The Unforgettable Fire photo session make the artwork worthwhile. The show is strong and solid. The audience sing along very well. With only 90 minutes of disc space used, the bootleg could have been filled with another recording, but this is not done.
This is the original pressing on this label.

I was only once at the Brixton Academy to see a show and was surprised how could U2 play such a small venue for their status
in 1984/1985. This is the second night in the same venue but clearly not enough for public demand, so at the end of the tour
they played once more in the Wembley arena. But this is nice one, quite 'intimate' gig and especially with a terrific sound.
I traded this tape in the early 90's directly from the taper, so this one is sourced from a 1st generation. The band really
rocks! I preferred the 1984 part of the Unforgettable Fire tour, although my first time with the band was in Milano the
year after. I would rate this recording a solid 9+, you won't be disappointed. Wanna some U2? Here we go!!!!
