notes on the remaster
10 July 2017
It's RJD's 75th birthday, so I dug out this incredibly-recorded and beautifully transferred full pre-FM concert, made from Westwood One LPs. I did precisely nothing to mess with the sound because honestly, it needed nothing done to it... it was already in the Monster category without any sonic interference from my happy li'l fingers. My biggest effort was hours of meticulous declicking -- this was a pretty noisy set of LPs, but it isn't anymore -- and removing the dozens of micro-clips present throughout, where it barely exceeded 0.0db. I also adjusted the volume in the last track very subtly, as it was about a decibel lower than the rest. Oh, and because this was on three LPs and the whole 20+ minute excursion through "Heaven and Hell" fell across two sides of the vinyl, I employed a bit of tricksilliness to rejoin the edit to make the transition from the guitar solo into the reprise seem a bit more seamless and natural. Anyway in my unhumble opinion, it now sounds indistinguishable from a seriously heavy, official "Holy Diver In Concert" album, recorded as it is in Selland Arena in Fresno just like the live Black Sabbath record "Live Evil" to which Ronnie contributed so much... he actually mentions this towards the end of the performance. Anyway, a few new titlings/taggings and FLAC fingerprints later, plus a few cleaned-up track markers and fades for smoothness, and this 71+ minutes of monumental metal melodrama and mayhem is delivered here for your enjoyment. I searched high and low and none of this set appears to ever have been issued; as far as I can tell, all the live B-sides and concert tracks from the deluxe editions of his first two DIO records seem to be from other shows. But regardless, pull it on down and you better never forget Ronnie James Dio, or he'll put away the guardian horns and The Evil Eye will getcha \m/ \m/ --EN
