Led Zeppelin 1969-07-06 Newport Jazz Festival Newport, RI(No.10 - 2-Source Matrix)

2-source audience recording matrix

Both audience sources from this performance suffered from a poor sound balance due to the proximity of each taper - source 1 had the vocals at the bottom of the mix while source 2 had the vocals all but blowing out the instruments. This presented a good opportunity to make a well-balanced version by mixing them together. Since the show's only a little over an hour, it seemed like a worthwhile endeavor.

I mixed the two sources in short segments at a time (usually 30-60 seconds) depending on where any pitch variations occurred. As mentioned above, source 1 is shorter than source 2 and therefore the minute or so leading up to Train Kept A-Rollin' comes from source 2 only, as do the last 20 seconds of Communication Breakdown and all of Long Tall Sally.

I was very pleased at how this turned out - hopefully you will be too.
