============================

There are many things to love about the ten years of touring Bruce and the band did since reuniting on stage in 1999, but high on the list is the staggering amount of material assailed. By the end of the WOAD tour, Springsteen had tackled some 280 songs, a number boosted considerably by the sign requests of the last two tours, especially given how many of those yielded one-off covers.

But even more compelling than live versions of other people’s songs are airings of little-performed material from Bruce’s own canon. It’s easy to forget that the 1999 tour was mounted in support of Tracks and rarities from the box did work their way into setlists to varying degrees, especially early on when such uber obscurities as “Car Wash” and “Brothers Under the Bridges” received their first and, to date, last airings.

Fast-forward to the end of the 2009 WOAD tour in Buffalo, and again Bruce pulls out first/only readings of several songs including the stunning River outtake (included on Tracks) “Restless Nights.” Steve might have been right all these years year, indeed.

For the hardcores, folks who saw dozens of shows over the last 12 years, these uncommon performances provided some of the greatest moments we experienced in those arenas. The genuine surprise delivered by a song you never thought you’d ever hear or hear again is one of the sublime pleasures of being a fan of an artist who has both an enormous back catalog and who isn’t afraid to mix up his set lists to revisit it. For us, there’s nothing more exciting than when Bruce steps to the microphone and says something to the effect of, “We don’t play this one much....”

Those words provide the title to our comprehensive 6-CD anthology. "We Don’t Play This One Much" gathers ten years of rarities from the once-played to the infrequently-played, all in one place. This set is all about the songs you haven’t heard that often and haven’t grown tired of, culled to create a listening experience that should be quite refreshing to anyone who has listened primarily to complete shows from any of the four tours.

You may wonder where we drew the line. The answer is somewhere around a dozen performances, any more than that and the song didn’t feel so rare any more, with just a couple of exceptions that felt like they would have been conspicuous by their absence given the other material included (like “Code of Silence.”)  We've also included songs performed slightly more but new to the Springsteen live canon over the course of the decade.

5. Whole Lotta Love~Black Dog

From Underground Uprising:
2 CD set from fragmentary audience source of the Market Square Arena,
Indianapolis gig on January 25, 1975. The sound for the most part is
top heavy, with some treble distortion but reasonable well balanced.
A fair number of cuts/fades are present - end of Song Remain The Same,
start of the Rain Song, beginning of No Quarter and also fading out
both Page's and Jones' solos in that number, the middle of Moby Dick,
Page's main solo in How Many More Times and the very start of Stairway.
Plant's vocals are pretty poor and the guitar work on the start of Over
The Hills and the start of the Stairway solo is pretty shaky. On the
plus side there are good versions of Kashmir - despite volume
fluctuations, and Rock and Roll. The guitar solos on No Quarter,
Trampled, and Black Dog are worth catching and the Wanton Song could
be said to be interesting!

Led Zeppelin 1975-01-24 Richfield Coliseum, Cleveland, OH

Ultraviolence Cleveland, Ohio 24/1/75 155 min. (3CD) SQ: 5-6

Set List: Rock+Roll, Sick Again, Over the Hills+Far Away, In My Time of Dying,
The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Kashmir, The Wanton Song, No Quarter,
Trampled Underfoot, Moby Dick, How Many More Times (The Hunter) cut
Stairway to Heaven, Whole Lotta Love, Black Dog, Communication Breakdown (Lemon Song)

A distant and at times distorted audience recording. The source used for this CD
release is the same well-circulated, below average but listenable source reviewed
by Luis Rey. The vastness of Richfield Coliseum can be felt in this recording, as
the audience gives the band a very warm welcome. The audience noise is at times
overwhelming. However, the audience noise is not very noticeable during most
tracks, and everything is clearly discernible though somewhat distant. As in
most of the early shows of this tour, Plant's voice is very rough and constantly
breaking under the strain. The contrast of mood between "OTHAFA" and "In My Time
of Dying" are striking as always, and Page is extraordinarily fluent in the
former despite his injury. The slide work-out on the latter illustrates that
Page is holding nothing back in this show. Unlike some of the '75 shows, there
is very little that can be considered sluggish or monotonous about this
performance. The entire event is conducted at a very fast pace. After "The
Rain Song" three of the next four tracks are from "Physical Grafitti". As Rey
indicates, "Kashmir" is not as heavy as usual and is played up-tempo. The
"Wanton Song" is a revelation. Despite his condition, Plant's vocals are very
effective here, and the instrumental machinery is devastating. It is hard to
imagine the band would choose to drop this from the set list within the week;
unless Plant felt it was too demanding on his damaged vocal chords. Having
never heard "Trampled Underfoot" before, the audience response to Plant's
introduction of it is very reserved. However, by the end of the song the
crowd is hysterical. "Perhaps you'll remember this" is Plant's intro to
"How Many More Times" and once again the audience is overjoyed. "HMMT"
has to be the all-time audience favorite from the Zep repertoire. This is
probably the most effective of the '75 versions of this song. As usual the
bow solo from "Dazed" is featured within, followed by "The Hunter" before a
return to the coda of "HMMT". "WLL" is little more than an intro to "Black Dog",
and a powerful version of "Communication Breakdown" brings an end to probably
the best pre-NY '75 show; one in which the band seems to really enjoy themselves
before a very receptive audience. Unfortunately, enjoyment of this performance
is limited by the rather poor sound quality.

Notes:
Good to Very Good audience recording. Almost complete missing about 10 minutes give or
take of Moby Dick. These cassettes were located by Jonohull through a friend of his who
went to all 3 Zeppelin shows in 1975 with the taper of this recording. His friend Kevin
was gracious enough to lend the cassettes out to Jonohull who in return passed them along
to me for repair and transfering. This is the first time this recording has ever been in
circulation and the first time it has been heard by anyone including Kevin in a great
many years.

1975.01.20 Chicago Stadium, Chicago.

After a little rambling I'm pretty sure to state that this performance, often attributed to the 21st
(with the additions of some tracks from the 20th to fill the missing song),  In fact,
in fact comes entirely from the first night.  Luis Rey probably led the most of us in that direction
and some bootleg labels also did it (Digger production, SIRA, Tarantura and Cobra Standard for example).
The supposed alt source is nothing than a worst sounding portion (76') of the known source.
So, this is the 20th January show in its entirety with the original song order.

Disc 01
01 Intro/Rock And Roll
02 Sick Again
03 Over The Hills And Far Away
04 when The Levee Breaks
05 In My Time Of Dying
06 The Song Remains The Same
07 The Rain Song

09 The Wanton Song
10 No Quarter
