Lynyrd Skynyrd 1975-04-27 Winterland San Francisco, Cal

Lynyrd Skynyrd
April 27, 1975
San Francisco, California, USA

DVD from video shot by Bill Graham's in-house multi-camera black and white setup. Not great video quality, but not too bad either. The soundboard audio is very decent quality with selectable Dolby Digital/AC3 or linear PCM audio.

There are a few minor bad spots, especially at the beginning of the show and please understand that the in-house black and white Winterland video setup left a bit to be desired even when captured off of a master tape. But that being said, I'm sure this will please any Lynyrd Skynyrd fan just fine! This is the first circulation for this VHS tape that was traded for over 20 years ago.

Comments and Reviews:

Performed at the Whiskey A Go Go club in Los Angeles in front of a small audience, this is the first part of Rush's set. They were due to return after "The Butts Band" but there is no known tape of the second set. The sound quality is really pretty good for a recording that is over 26 years old. There is some tape hiss, but the instruments all come across well (the bass is a bit low in the mix) and Geddy's voice is in good form. I'd rate this one between a VG+ and EX-.  Ged introduces each song; Fancy Dancer as a song for dancing, In the Mood as "our next single" etc. At the end of In the Mood there's a 4 - 5 minute hold up as Neil's drums are repaired. Alex strums away quietly throughout and there's a "country ditty" jam between him and Ged, while Ged apologizes for the delay at regular intervals. There's an interesting early version of In the End after the delay which is introduced as a new song.  Overall a good early show, well worth tracking down.

The Police 1979-01-18 WDR "Musikladen" Bremen, Germany

Here is a rare club gig with The Police taped in 1978 (the exact date I am unsure of). I know the show was taped in Germany although I don't know where. I originally taped this off of MTV (when it really was MTV) in 1981. The video has deteriorated but the audio survived but not without allot of CPR.

I xfered the audio portion to dat many moons ago so let's start there. I loaded the dat into my computer using a creative EMU-0404 (digital optical inputs) into Adobe Audition 1.5.

There was this really annoying high pitched whine throughout the entire recording which i filtered out. Other than that i just pumped the bottom end a bit to give it a bit more balls.

The performance is, in my opinion, one of their best. just the three of them raw as it can be. interestingly enough since they only had one LP out at the time they didn't have a helluva lot of material. but you can tell from this performance that they were on the right track.

speaking of tracks:

1) So lonely
2) Fallout
3) Born in the 50's
4) Hole in my Life
5) Peanuts
6) Lanlord
7) Roxanne
8) Truth Hits Everybody

short sweet and to the point. If anyone still has the video of this i'd love to see it again.

Lineage: VHS-->audio xfered to DAT-->HD-->Adobe Audiotion 1.5-->Flac 5-->you

as always don't compress or sell. trade freely to the masses. ENJOY!

and Reviews:
The Digital Dan:
This is one of those really rare sources, rescued from the back of someone's closet by an experienced Rush collector. Now it is available to all to listen to. This is a first gen source, and there is currently no way of finding the master. The show itself is a bit distant and Alex is low in the mix. But the show sounds great, very listenable with minimal audience interference. And clean? This is one of the cleanest sounding first gens I've ever heard, especially for a recording that is over 26 years old! Geddy introduces In the Mood with "We would like to do a number that will be our next single. This is a song called In the Mood. I hope everybody is tonight." Then Geddy introduces Anthem with "We would like to do a number that will be on the next album. This is a song called Anthem."
Now there are a few problems with the source. The first few minutes of the recording are rough and there are some sections of In the Mood that sound like radio interference as well as part of the drum solo that is equally rough. When the original master tape was copied, it was copied to a Hi-Fi stereo VCR, the best quality audio recorder available before DAT. When the tape was later transferred to cdr, the tape would no longer track perfectly, hence the static noises. Now there is also a possibility that this isn't a typical audience recording and that it might have been recorded on stage. I'll let you the listener be the judge of that. Once again, many thanks to Ash for making this show available. As with all Digital Reproductions releases, this is available by free trade only. Keep the spirit of trading alive and don't buy or sell these recordings.

A friend of mine sent this to me a few months ago. This one looks to be in Mono.
I did an analysis and it looks like both sides were perfectly matched. I listed to another version of this and saw that the left side is really muffled and riddled with a ton of low end. I'm assuming this is the same recording. What ever the case, it sounds much better this way.

I did very little to this recording without messing with the integrity of the show.
I quieted some of the hiss down and brought down some of the low end rumbling.

I got this show in a trade a couple years back.
This one just turned up a few years ago and the sound
is amazing. It's the earlist Police show available with
them as a three piece band and the only known recording
where they played "Dead End Job". This one's essential
for any Police collection.

Wow, really interesting gig here!!! Pitch was closer than you think guys and gals... They're playing these tunes FAST because their set is so short. Remember they shared the bill with Marshall Tucker and Elvin Bishop..

What I done did with Adobe Audition 3.0:

Pitch correction - done

Multiband Compression to bring out the entire sperctrum of frequencies - done (very carefully and at a very low ratio to keep dynamics intact)

Eeklair smartTouCH Hiss Removal - done

Channel Mixer - Right Channel - done (It's a mono recording with azimuth issues - this always give the 'novice' the impression that its a stereo recording, when its just a messed up azimuth.)

Stereo Reverb - done (Just a little bit - to make it more headphone-friendly)

and Reviews:

Taken from Brent's Bootlegs:

This is one of the worst sounding bootlegs I own -- but it does have one redeeming value. It is the very earliest show on CD. This is strictly for collectors. By-Tor '74 is a MUCH better recording from this same time period.

Bill Girton:

An average broadcast recording. There is some signal static but nothing to bad.  All of the instruments can be heard clearly but the signal fluctuates a few times throughout the show. It has the first live performance of Fly By Night on it (according to Geddy).  I have always had a hell of a time getting proof positive on the source of this show. I have heard that it is the complete 8/24/74 show and also that it is a mix of 8/24/74 and 11/3/74.  To make matters even more confusing supposedly 11/3/74 is the first time Fly By Night was ever played. That would mean that this is either a combination of 8/24/74 and 11/3/74 or actually a complete 11/3/74. A close listening seems to suggest two different sounding recordings so I am going with the combination theory.

Rush 1974-08-26 Agora Ballroom, Cleveland, Oh + 1974-12-06

New In Town PE
Agora Ballroom
Cleveland, Oh
Source: Radio Broadcast

Another very early concert in the history of Rush.  Cleveland and Rush were quite a match in the mid seventies and Rush owes much of their initial success to Cleveland radio stations and their generous airplay.  The Agora can be thanked for its practice of taping live shows at the time.  This is the complete show, finally.  When Geddy Lee released his solo album, WMMS radio in Cleveland re-broadcast the first two Rush shows from the Agora Theater in Cleveland.  Newly remastered these shows sound fantastic and this is no exception.  Hands down the best sounding early Rush recording.  Even if you don't like old Rush, you'll love this show.  The energy and raw power comes through with such clarity that you can hear Geddy and Alex using guitar pics!  As with all Digital Reproductions releases, this recording is available for free trade.  If you paid for the recording, someone ripped you off.
