Yes 1974-12-11 - KBFH - Quadraphonic DVD in Dolby Digital 5.1 - Boston

The King Biscuit Flour Hour
Boston Garden
Boston, MA
1974-12-11

In honor of Jon Anderson's 64th birthday (October 25, 1944).

"Yes we'll still need him,
Yes we'll still feed him
When He's Sixty-Four."

(with apologies to Lennon & McCartney)

Lineage: King Biscuit Flour Hour pre-broadcast tape -> CD audio -> SHN -> TheTooleMan (Sony Vegas and Sound Forge) -> Sony DVD Architect -> YOU

This DVD makes history.

For the first time ever, you can hear this program faithfully reproduced in its original quadraphonic mix using the widely-accepted Dolby Digital 5.1 format.

The King Biscuit Flour Hour series of 1975 was presented in "compatible stereophonic and SQ-Matrix quadraphonic sound.” But few people owned receivers which would allow them to enjoy the quadraphonic audio experience. And since SQ never gained wide commercial acceptance, it was discontinued after a short while.

This SQ-encoded recording of Yes was decoded in June, 2008 by TheTooleMan after extensive research into various decoding techniques. It was then re-encoded in Dolby Digital 5.1 for playback on home theater systems. Since the SQ format does not include a center channel mix, the center channel is silent in the surround mix. Bass frequencies below 118 Hz were directed to the LFE (subwoofer) channel for the Dolby mix.

A lossless stereo LPCM version of the decoded front channel audio is also included.

The DVD will play like any NTSC DVD on your DVD player. It is authored to allow selection of either the Dolby Digital 5.1 quadraphonic audio or the LPCM stereo audio track. You may require special cables and other hardware to reveal the full quadraphonic effect. Note that SQ-encoded quadraphonic did not provide much separation between the front and rear channels, so panning between front and rear and isolation of instruments in the rear channels is not very dramatic.

The original Yes King Biscuit Flour Hour program included the opening set by Gryphon. That performance is not included on the DVD.

The sequence of the Yes setlist for the 1974 Relayer tour was altered by King Biscuit to better accommodate their commercial schedule. "Close to the Edge" was played before "To Be Over" during live shows, but in the broadcast the order of the two songs was reversed. The two tracks have been restored to their correct order on this DVD.

"Ritual" was also played live during the 1974 Relayer tour. It was performed on the night this show was recorded, but a King Biscuit recording has never been released to the public…

Yet.

This is a flawed tape that I've never been able to upgrade.

This is the 28th Relayer Tour performance.
Sounds like it was taped out in the cold, and there isn't too much intrusive audience, save for one or two nearby clappers.

The sound is not bad for a Stereo Audience Cassette recording, but the trouble here is the volume fluctuates throughout.
Whether it is the Quad system used, the deck malfunctioning, the tape folding, psychedelics, or some other problem, EVERYone I've ever found with this tape says it has the same problems. You can still listen to it, but it sure is annoying after a while.

I did ONCE try to repair all the volume changes, but I think I scrapped it and gave up before the end.

The tape flip in CTTE is just the taper adjusting the input and turning it all the way down to zero and back up again, so not much goes missing there. The next tape flip is before Gates and cuts off some of the intro. The beginning of AYAI is very loud, be careful! The final tape flip cuts Ritual in half.

Here's hoping you can find a better tape, or at least can enjoy this one!

The King Biscuit Flower Hour - Yes
"The Gates of the Stellar Attraction at Boston Gardens on the King Biscuit Flower Hour"
Boston Gardens
Boston, MA
11-Dec-1974

Remastered by Shaun Toole, June 2003

Recordings of Yes at Boston Gardens broadcast on the King Biscuit
Flower Hour (KBFH) have been released as a commercial bootleg and in
various formats. This recording appears to have originated from a
pre-FM copy intended for broadcast in 1975. I am basing that belief on
the announcer's mention of "SQ Matrix Quadraphonic Sound." This is the
cleanest copy of these recordings that I have ever found. Remastering
was done with Sound Forge and other PC-based editing software. Tracks
have been re-ordered from the original version to follow the set list
of the original concert. "Ritual" has never been included in the KBFH
recordings. It may be lying in a vault somewhere, waiting to see the
light of day. Let's hope that day comes soon.  soon!

Yes 1974-04-21 - William Tell Edition 069 Remastered - Zürich

remaster notes:
this was posted (before remastering) by luciferburns as part of his dimey award nominated "Wiliam (don't ask just) Tell" overtures series. I have balanced the levels out and retracked a couple,
reducing the overall volume by 1.5-2 db's, individual clap reduction (of 3-6 db's) was done to the loudest claps after most of the tracks, to make them not overwhelming in comparison to everything else, a 4 second silent gap was removed at 4:21 into RSOG, another .130 silent gap was removed at 4:35, and another 4 second gap at 5:08) a short gap was spliced 1:58 into "the ancient", a recorder shutoff noise and short gap was removed after "the ancient", a gap of about 3 seconds was removed at 10:00 of "ritual", another gap of about 4 seconds was removed at 10:19 of "ritual", a repeating section of about 5 minutes was removed at about 9:36 of "ritual",
a new track was made for the encore applause after "ritual", and well over 100 loud claps in it were reduced to make it easier to listen to, about .3 seconds of it were removed at about 1:41 to remove a recorder turn-on noise just before the band returns for roundabout, removed gap about 9:08 into starship trooper.
I also spliced in some applause after starship trooper (ending with a fadeout) since the recorder shut off abruptly after it ended, to smooth the ending out a little. all these gaps are from interruptions in the recording. the ancient and ritual sound a little better now, the other 2 songs with gaps have some parts missing (not just what were gaps) and don't sound as "continuous" as would be preferred, spliced together as well as I could without having a 2nd source to fix the missing parts with. I think it sounds a little better this way, but please don't expect it to sound uninterrupted, even though I tried to make it sound uninterrupted. a hippo can swim too, but not like a dolphin. the clap reduction makes a big difference since this was a very clappy crowd. especially if you listen to this very quietly, or very loudly, the loudest of the clapping won't be even louder than the music in parts as it was before.
thanks to Judge Free for recording this show. It took some work to reduce the loudest clapping
to a reasonable volume, and maintain the continuity of the overall recording,
but it's swiss ocean tales of yes, so I thought it was worth it.
track 5 ended with a fadeout before, and track 6 began with a fade in.
I have left that and the track split as is.
no "remembering" in this show (did they forget, or just get too close to the edge?)
the recording has survived nearly 36 years well.

LDB Special Series #441 (RLR collection)

Out of my 17,000+ shows and radio broadcasts, I have many concerts that were special for some reasons: the setlist, the musicians, the venue or unexpected events. These are the ones I'd like to propose you. Most of these come from my cassettes collection, so they will be released at a slower pace than my Master Series! But you won't be disappointed!
I will try to gather the most unusual things I have in my collection and, as always, your feedback and comments will be my reward for all the work involved in this project.

DO NOT share this music on mp3, just convert it for your own use. Sharing mp3's is the right way to make me stop sharing music here.

I had transferred this couple of tapes from RLR collection already, but when I listened back the recording was running way too fast. So I took the tapes back and transferred them again using a pitch correction. I hope I captured the right speed.

Overall, this is a low generation with low hiss. It must have been recorded with professional device because at various times the taper adjusts the recording volume. By far not perfect recording but still enjoyable. You kind of "smell" the ambience from a typical show of the 70´s there...

Enjoy! And before you ask, I have not compared this source with other circulating sources...

There's a cut in TRSOG, probably a tape flip, and that seemed a natural point for the transition to disk two.

Audio quality is fairly good. Excellent performance.

Yes 1974-04-16 - Westfallenhalle - Dortmund

I saw a request for this show on another Yes torrent so I dug around and found this show not yet on CD. I had an old version of this on cassette from a trade eons ago, but discovered that I had an updated version from another trade on a DAT tape. My cassette version stopped after The Ancient whereas the DAT version inlcuded the rest of the show. I pulled out the DAT and ripped it to the PC and listened to the whole thing. Not a bad Tales show really, but its aged somewhat so I give it a "B". There are a couple of small cuts here and there presumably due to tape flips as they match the times well for 90 minute cassettes. My only puzzlement is whether the rest of the show from Ritual to the end is from the same show. Not sure. The sound was a tad different, but there were characteristics that made me think it was the same. Anyway its all here.

I tweaked the sound in a few ways to make it better (to my ears). The big omission is the first part of Ritual is missing. Otherwise, pretty much a complete show. Even some after-show music. There is a 4 minute section of crowd noise after Ritual before the band came back on, but tracked I it so it can be skipped (no band talking in there).

Yes 1974-04-16 - Tales From Playing The Oceans - Dortmund

Tales From Playing The Oceans (Highland HL638/639)

Westfalenhalle, Dortmund, Germany - April 16th, 1974

Disc 1 (61:35):
1.01 Firebird Suite (1.33)
1.02 Siberian Khatru (10.24)
1.03 And You And I (9.58)
1.04 Close To The Edge (19.30)
1.05 The Revealing Science Of God (20.05)

Disc 2 (71:36):

2.02 Prelude Ritual (2.35)
2.03 Ritual (26.48)
2.04 Roundabout (8.26)
2.05 Starship Trooper (12.28)

Tales From Playing The Oceans contains one of the final shows from the Tales From Topographic Oceans tour and is just weeks away from Rick Wakeman’s first of four exits from the band.  The tape is a fair to good audience recording with some distortion and fuzziness surrounding the music with a predominant hollow echo.  It can be enjoyable once your ears adjust to it, but there are better tapes out there of this tour.  The tape is complete except for a cut at 2:53 in “The Revealing Science Of God”.

Yes began the tour with the intention of playing the full Close To The Edge and Tales From Topographic Oceans LPs with “Roundabout” played as the encore.  This was the set list for the six week UK tour in November and December 1973 and the first month of the North American tour in February 1972.  After the second Detroit performance on the 28th (and available as Science Of God Story on Highland (HL416/417)) the second side of Topographic Oceans, ”The Remembering”, was dropped and “Starship Trooper” was added as the second encore.  This decision was made since Wakeman consistently improvized the keyboard in that piece upsetting Anderson and Howe.  It is a regretful decision since his solos were always inventive in that piece.

This release on Highland is their third from the final week of this tour, following Tales From The Edge (HL14142#23) documenting their April 14th date in Ludwighafen and Paris ‘74 (HL132/33#Y26) covering their Paris date on April 19th.  It’s difficult to understand the label’s facination with this period.  In this concert, as well as the others, they sound tired and frustrated with the new material.  The opener “Siberian Khatru” is a storming start but “And You And I” has trouble getting off the ground.  “The Revealing Science Of God” sounds good and they play a thunderous version of “Ritual”, but in “The Ancient” Wakeman completely disappears from the middle section leaving Howe and Squire to fight for themselves.

As interesting a document for Yes’ history is, it would be great if Highland were to release some of the earlier shows from this tour when there was more enthusiasm and they were playing “The Remembering”.  That track is a fantastic live piece which the band members themselves still want to play live.  It at least let Wakeman and Howe stretch out and improvise.  The label utilizes several rare photos that appeared on the Rhino remastered and expanded edition of Topographic Oceans released recently.

“Tales Tour”

Audience recording. I received this in trade in the late 90’s and have never seen it offered again, so I thought I would post it here. I do not know anything about the history of the recording, but as it appears to be somewhat rare, I suspect the recording is not that far from the master source, but who knows.

I would rate the sound as average for a Tales show, which is to say listenable but not great. Sound samples are provided in mp3 format.I personally never pass on any recording of the Tales tour!

I like the performance and find myself listening to this particular show more than even some better sounding Tales shows, so that is something. I particularly like the Tales songs. I encourage anyone with an upgrade to please post it.

I may not be able to seed continuously, so don't freak out if I shut down from time to time, even overnight.

This is not the best-sounding yes tape ever. The instrumental/vocal balance is ok but the recording suffers from dropouts and distortion. The encore is worse: roundabout sounds muddy, starship trooper has only treble and distortion. The tape runs out during 'würm'.

It has been released on cd as 'Tales from the edge' but 10 minutes from 'ritual' were missing. Read a review here:
http://www.collectorsmusicreviews.com/yes/yes-tales-from-the-edge-highland-hl414141y30/

This tape (received by a trader, circa 1989) has the whole show. I don't know which generation it is, so if anyone has the cd, I'd be interested how the cd sounds in comparison.

Thanks to all of you for so many nice comments on the recent "H.B." uploads.

PLEASE send thanks to our truly beloved friend in Sweden, "Per-Erik"

It is his collection outside of my own Masters that you will see me "raiding" the most,
because he is one of the very few people that i have traded with that aren't already now here with us all uploading their own stuff.
Give him time...and then really WATCH OUT!

This my way of giving back to all those who have shared and uploaded all their great YES recordings!

hi, here is (probably) a new and uncirculated source of the Yes show from April 13, 1974, the second night, in Munich. The recording is unfortunately incomplete because my friend (and taper) went to see the Troggs that night and therefore didn't see the show in its entirety and therefore didn't record it. The quality is quite good for the Olympiahalle, although there are better recordings of other bands from the 70´s.
Enjoy.

Please DO NOT convert to MP3!!!

This is a pretty decent (and rare) recording that I obtained from Relayerman - probably not the first recording to obtain if you're just getting into 'TFTO'-era boots, but, not the last, either. There are a few dropouts here and there, it's a bit bassy in parts, trebly in others - but, this is a surprisingly good recording.

LDB Special Series #394 (RLR collection)

Out of my 7,000+ shows and radio broadcasts, I have many concerts that were special for some reasons: the setlist, the musicians, the venue or unexpected events.

Finally, some notes about your truly ldb: I have been a fan of live music since I was 9 years old (that is where I attended my very first show, a PFM/De André gig at Milano's Palalido) and my first taped show was at 11 using a crappy portable cassette player with embedded microphone. I become more serious about taping in 1983 when I started to record every show. In 1991 I acquired my first Sony Professional and in 2000 I moved to MiniDisc to finally settle on R-09 in early 2008.

I have seen over 500 shows in my career. Most of them were taped but for others bad luck struck and I could not record it: on top of my mind there's a Paul McCartney show in 1993 in Milano where I was caught by the security or Porcupine Tree in Roma in March 1999 when the DAT machine would seem to work but listening back to the tape there would just be a long bunch of silence. Or during a Y.Malmsteen show where I got so annoyed that I left halfway through the show and erased the tape and finally on a PFM show in Milano in 2007 where I had to leave before the
encore because the baby-sitter had to leave early that evening. Some other times I was very close not to tape or had to do it in extremely difficult situations: for the four Peter Gabriel shows at Earls Court in 1987 security was checking tapers with metal detector; at the David Gilmour comeback show in London in 2001 at RFH I had the security guy sitting next to me but I managed to tape the show without checking one single time my MiniDisc!

There was a time I was travelling anywhere in Europe to see shows, especially if there was no touring in Italy: I remember Rush in Paris in 1992 when the trio did not even know what Italy was. I have seen shows at stadiums (Genesis at Wembley) and in places with 30 people (Porcupine Tree in Milano in 1997); bands that would later become huge (Pearl Jam in a free show for 150 people) and masters of jazz (Miles Davis or Sarah Vaughan). Shows I will never forget (Pink Floyd at Versailles castle) and some I would rather forget (no comment...).

I truly believe that live music is what keeps music alive, what make us enjoying it together, what allow us to have deep feelings and transmit it to others. Studio records are nowadays 'commodities': you can buy online as anonymous wav files and listen in your iPod or at home. Live music will always imply an effort to buy the tix, travel to the venue, see the show, think about it when coming back home.

This is a low generation copy acquired long time ago from a german trader. The show must have been taped with professional equipment because at the beginning you can note the taper raffling with the recording level (quite rare utility back in the early 70´s for a recording device...). Soundwise this is ok, nothing spectacular but remember this is almost 40 years ago! At that point of the tour the band was dropping one side of the Topographic suite. But the show was long enough to almost reach the 130 minutes.

I am sure you will enjoy another show from RLR collection.
