The first day of summer presented a rare treat for Canberra's metal community: a single concert featuring both Paul Di'Anno and Blaze Bayley, performing only Iron Maiden numbers.
This was my first and presumably last time seeing Paul Di'Anno. Unfortunately, it was memorable for the wrong reasons: Di'Anno's voice was shot and he indulged in lengthy, crass monologues in between tracks. At first, Di'Anno claimed that his loss of voice was a mystery, but later on he admitted that he had stayed out late drinking the night before with Stephen King of Stand Alone. Well gee thanks, Paul.
To be fair, Di'Anno's performance did improve somewhat after a few songs, and he made a good fist of Remember Tomorrow and Killers. Also, Di'Anno's final effort, dedicated to Bon Scott, was performed well and with feeling. Nonetheless, the contrast between Di'Anno and Paul Mario Day - not to mention Blaze - was depressingly stark.
Happily, Blaze put on a tremendous show that did justice to Maiden's legacy. I've always thought Blaze was made the scapegoat for Maiden's creative slump in the '90s, and he certainly proved his worth as a frontman in Canberra. Not only did Blaze produce excellent versions of underrated songs like Virus and Como Estais Amigos, he also made some other, mediocre material sound quite reasonable.
Also, Blaze soldiered on through an early power failure and ongoing technical problems, and was not at all discouraged by the thinness of the crowd relative to Di'Anno. On the contrary, he behaved as if he were in a large venue, demanding crowd participation just as Bruce Dickinson would.
Thumbs up, too, to the local band who backed both Blaze and Di'Anno. With the exception of the bassist, they were the same professional outfit that supported The Ripper last May.
While my recordings came out pretty well, there is continual background static through the first three-quarters of the Blaze show. My friend Navigator kindly produced two masters, one with the static left in and one with the static removed. I include both versions here, so you can decide which one sounds best.
Finally, thanks to kravad for his constructive criticism of my Ripper recording. This capture is a marked improvement because of it.
