10-Quarter to Three

Notes: Pretty decent recording, although between songs you can hear the audience talking and shouting(and cursing) at one another. Badlands and Point Blank are missing, the end of Because the Night and the start of She's the One are also cut(very slow tape flip I guess). The rest of the show is good. There is a slight edit right before the 8:00 mark on Racing also. This came to me in flac files and was set up to be on 3 discs, I soon realized it all fit on two discs and it matches the existing artwork. Racing was also cut at the end but the next track was the ending on the flac files I received. I spliced in where the edit was, there is a slight repetition and then the track continues(another tape flip I assume). I reripped the discs I had instead of using the flac files as the correction I had made were on the CDs not the flac files.

Notes:
Blaze in Helsingborg. Big city - no one care about Blaze!
I counted the audience, bar personal & security and got it to about 35 people.

I found a nice sofa to sit in and just put the recorder next to me.
The sound turned out to be really good so enjoy it.

Why is "The Launch" cut? Well, the reason is that after "Born As A Stranger"
the band left the stage and acourding to several other shows, this was the last song.
BUT, Blaze thought that since the people who came to the show, should have a special
song and the band came on again. I had almost packed down the gear that I used and
I have to pick it up again fast, so I missed the first part. Sorry.

Enjoy!!

    Show notes:

Due to the previous gig having a lot of technical problems, and because the band had
lots of requests for another show, they decided to do a second show in Rocktown before
leaving to Germany, thus making it 3 shows in the Helsinki area in one week. This time
there were no technical problems, though some of the issues from the previous gig were
still there, namely the location of the mixing board and that way the mixing was rather
bad the whole night, especially with the bass. Guitars were also very low the whole night.

As an amusing note, Blaze auctioned his battered, and autographed, suitcase that had been
molested by the airport workers on their way to Finland. They were also joined by the lads
from the opening act Maiden Hell (Finnish Iron Maiden cover band) for the encore of Sign of
the Cross. Overall a great show, though the performance wasn't as good as the previous gig.

    Recording notes:

This time I stayed put for the entire show and it really shows too. The sound doesn't fluctuate
nearly as much as the last time and I managed to avoid people bumping into me as well. Despite
this, there's still some minor annoyances such as the beer glasses clashing every now and then,
most notably about halfway through Speed Of Light, some audience chatter here and there (rather
low level, nothing more than minor annoyance). Also despite the audience being loud as fuck at
the venue, I'm glad that it's rather well balanced on the recording, and isn't drowning out the
band at all.

Again, I didn't do much in the mastering phase, just the basic normalize and a bit of volume boost
by amplifying (no clipping).

Blaze Bayley 2008-04-18 PA's On The Edge Helsinki, Finland

08 - Born As A Stranger
09 - Man On The Edge

    Show notes:
The show was played at the old university ballroom, apparently with the old PA too as they kept crapping out constantly. The gig started with massive amounts of distortion, which luckily improved a bit as the show went on, but the distortion never really went away completely and some "farts" could be heard here and there. The venue had maybe 200 people in at most, and it wasn't even half packed, which also resulted in huge hall echo that ruined the sound even further. The show itself was good but paled in comparison with the two shows at Rocktown that Blaze did exactly one year before this gig. The opening acts for the gig were Armour and Heavy Metal Perse, neither of which were taped.

    Recording & mastering notes:
Since the distortion couldn't be fixed at all, I chose to ignore that side entirely and just improve what I could. I dampened some of the boomy bass by equalizing and tried bringing up the guitars and vocals slightly, in my opinion it turned out alright, although this is still far from being amongst my best recordings. Along with this, all I did was apply fades at the beginning and end of the set and crank up the volume via normalize and hardlimit combo.

Someone requested vintage Blaze Bayley recordings and I don't remember
if I ever posted these so here ya go! I taped Blaze three times, the
first one was in Malmo 2001 opening for Helloween (that one has been
posted here - let me know if anyone needs it again).

The second and third times were in 2002 when Blaze opened for Savatage,
a great lineup if there ever was one. And even though he only had a
short opening slot he managed to switch the set around between Malmo
and Copenhagen so we got two different gigs. Very nice indeed.

Queen 1978-12-03 Maple Leaf Gardens Toronto, ON

Queen
Toronto, ON, Canada
Maple Leaf Gardens
December 3, 1978
Quality: A- / B

This is (hopefully) the definitive version of the first night in Toronto 1978, a mix of two versions of the same audience tape (both pitch/speed corrected).  The majority of the show comes from the better quality version, while I filled in most of the gaps with the inferior one.  My edits are as follows, always with cross-fades:

-added tape to beginning of show
-added tape after Somebody To Love
-added tape after If You Can't Beat Them
-added tape to beginning of Killer Queen
-added tape to beginning of Get Down Make Love
-added tape after Get Down Make Love
-added tape after You're My Best Friend
-added tape after Now I'm Here
-added tape after Spread Your Wings
-added tape to end of '39
-added tape to beginning of Keep Yourself Alive
-added tape after KYA
-added tape after BoRhap
-added tape after TYMD
-added tape after SHA

The only remaining cuts are during Somebody To Love, Spread Your Wings, and Keep Yourself Alive (to a lesser extent).  It seems the person recording the show used 90 minute tapes, which explains the cuts during SYW and KYA, but the STL cut is there perhaps because a security guard had come close by.  You can hear the tape wheel turning in the left channel for the few minutes surrounding the first tape flip.  I have also removed all of the little clicks from the recording.  Thanks to Ginger for sending me a clean version of '39, as mine had those brutal digi-clicks!

Lineage of better version: AUD > Master > 1st Gen Cassette > WAV > CDR (x) > WAV > FLAC Frontend level 8 > WAV (GoldWave pitch correction) > FLAC level 8

Lineage of inferior version: AUD > ? > Cassette > WAV > CDR (x) > FLAC Frontend level 8 > WAV (GoldWave pitch correction) > FLAC level 8

This is a fantastic show, with the band in a very relaxed mood, as they were a couple days before in Montreal.  Freddie is in a bit better voice, too.  After a subtle applause following Let Me Entertain You, Freddie says, "You should've seen the audience in Montreal.  They'll teach you a thing or two."  Boos ensue!  He continues, "Forget the security.  This is your night!".  Freddie delivers a great (and gutsy in places!) version of Dreamers Ball.  The boys have a fantastic jam during Brighton Rock.  Brian is horribly out of tune during his WWRY solo!  Overall, it's an excellent show, and just as essential as the other great-sounding shows from the tour.

The layout of the original discs was unevenly distributed, with the 2nd disc containing only the last 2 tracks.  A bit different here.  Hope you don't mind...
Many choose not to burn their tracks nowadays, so it's of little consequence until you burn copies of the show to share.  I believe there was a set-break
here, anyway.  As there's a cut in the beginning of "You Mean So Much To Me", the effect of those tracks butting up against another is much less jarring
if burned to 2 discs.  Continuous playback will still have a jump in the transition.  There was a bit of an attempt by the producers of the original boot to connect "Thundercrack" with "YMSMTM" which I undid, as it contained a small amount of redundant material. I've attempted to smooth over these rough transitions caused by what appears to be the original taper starting and stopping the cassette.

I've also decided not to EQ these tracks, although I do think they will benefit by boosting the low end by various amounts, but that's personal, and I know
some folks prefer making the choice on their own, if at all, as well as to what degree at any given time.  So - season to taste...  I know a bunch of
y'all are probably on a low sodium diet at this point, anyway...

Thanks to all involved in the capture, preservation and previous presentation of this fine classic show!  Wish I coulda been there...

Big thanks to Eric T for creating another superb art package to put this thing in for y'all, too.  It'll give those Japanese bootleggers and E-Bay sellers somethin' they can put out on the market right away...

FROM BRUCEBASE:  There is no circulating audio from this show. Please note that the widely circulating soundboard audio attributed to this show (most famously found on the CD "You Mean So Much To Me" (Great Dane)) is actually from a small club gig in Nashville ten days later (see listing for January 29 for specific details).

1974-01-29 - MUTHER'S MUSIC EMPORIUM, NASHVILLE, TN

DOES THIS BUS STOP AT 82ND STREET? (4:04) / WALKING THE DOG (9:12) / INCIDENT ON 57TH STREET (7:44) / KITTY'S BACK (9:53) / THUNDERCRACK (11:50) / YOU MEAN SO MUCH TO ME (start cut, 9:50) / GROWIN' UP (3:01) / BLINDED BY THE LIGHT (11:00) / LET THE FOUR WINDS BLOW (start cut, 6:42) / ROSALITA (COME OUT TONIGHT) - SHOTGUN (8:54)

One show, double bill, with Springsteen and band opening for headlining Texas blues guitar legend Freddie King (and his band). King was booked for a six-night residency, however Springsteen was a special guest only for the first two nights. Bruce played before King both nights but was allowed to give a headliner-length performance. The above-mentioned ten-song setlist represents Bruce's complete performance and is from an excellent quality soundboard that is most commonly found on the widely circulating CD 'You Mean So Much To Me' (Great Dane). Unfortunately, the folks at Great Dane incorrectly attributed this audio to a January 19 show at Kent State University and this erroneous information has widely propagated ever since. (Please refer to the January 19 Kent State listing for specific details about that show, which took place in a much larger venue before a substantially larger crowd).

Bruce's booking at this small, 300-seat club came about after Mike Appel became aware of a CBS Sales Convention taking place in Nashville and, additionally, that the entire CBS contingent would be staying in a hotel near this club. Appel conducted a handbill/leaflet drop to each room in the hotel, inviting nearly 200 CBS sales and marketing people to attend the shows. However, according to Appel, nobody from CBS turned up and the club was painfully empty. The audio evidence certainly backs up Appel's recollection. There doesn't sound like there are more than 100 people in the club for Bruce's show. It is speculated this soundboard was recorded because Appel wanted to have material from the show to give to the CBS people he (wrongly) anticipated would show up. This was a single show consisting of two sets. There was a short intermission after "Thundercrack". The opening song of the second set, "You Mean So Much To Me", is missing its opening minute or so. Similarly "Blinded By The Light" was the final song in the second set and the opening minute of the first encore, "Let The Four Winds Blow", is missing. "Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)" (which contains the "Shotgun" segment) was the final encore.

15 December 1974 - Afternoon and Evening Shows (complete)
Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, Long Island
New York, USA

Source: Nassau Coliseum 1974 Off Master (Idol Mind)
2009 Japanese 4 × Silver CD liberated boot

Many, many thanks go to Vinymatt and sgolston for helping to acquire this one! I wouldn't have got it without them, and their trust and patience is a shining example to us all!!

The 38th and 39th shows of George Harrison's 1974 North American tour, from an audience recording. This one contains the full shows, with the Indian sections, which were missing from earlier versions. The sound quality (after a slightly rough start) is excellent - clear (if not absolutely crystal) and clean, and an improvement on the Undercover set, which came from the same recordings.

EARLY SHOW
The recording gets off to a muffled and uneven start, but becomes clearer as it progresses. George's voice does not sound hoarse at all, although his speaking voice is perhaps a bit deeper than normal. Ravi Shankar is still off sick, and George mentions this in the introduction to the Indian section. There is a tape cut after the end of "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)", but it doesn't affect the music. George remains upbeat, with a few jokes sprinkled into the proceedings, and unlike the evening performance, there is no hint of frustration at any lack of audience enthusiasm.

LATE SHOW
The crowd were evidently unresponsive (though people around the taper sound enthusiastic), and George expresses frustration at this at a couple of points in the second half of the show. His good humour remains, however. This is the show which John Lennon attended (at least part of it anyway - he said the Indian section wasn't played as Ravi shankar was still out of action: in fact, the full Indian set was played! Perhaps he was misquoted - but Badman gives an extended transcription which looks genuine). The tapes wobbles in the Undercover version are gone, along with the tape cuts (except during the pre-encore applause).

Contrast clause -
This is a different recording of the late show to this one -

Restored by Galemark

September 23, 1975

I got this great concert at another torrent site (thanks to lvdeadhead for the up) and was floored.
The sound was much clearer than previous MP3 versions I had heard.   That said, the tape still had major problems.
It sounded as if it were culled from at least two different sources
(later seeing the wavs virtually proved this) so my first mission was to match EQ curves.
Secondly, there were several dropouts and/or distortions that I repaired/minimized.  I also used minimal NR in some spots.
Last but not least the track separations were quite bad, some even with repetition of several seconds of sound,
so I cleaned those up.   I hope you enjoy my efforts.

One of the very first Mac concerts with Lindsay Buckingham & Stevie Nicks,
it provides a rare opportunity to hear the new lineup perform such classics as “Hypnotized”, “Spare Me a Little” and “Why”.
The latter especially comes to life with Buckingham at the helm.
This performance comes from the very short period where they played older FM tunes out of necessity rather than as an homage.
