David Bowie Hunky Geordie Tapes Volume 01 (Rev A)

Description:
This is a re-up of the first volume of the Hunky Geordie Tapes, previously upped to MWP in October 2012.  Please note that while it's the same material as in the original torrent, virtually all of the files have been updated: Tin Machine in Wolverhampton is a new recording, all of the recordings have been run through TLH for sector boundary errors, the label art has been added, and all of the text files and MD5s are updated.  Therefore please DON'T seed using the original MWP files

As promised, here's the first batch of the audio transfers which, from this point forwards, are now called The Hunky Geordie Tapes.

For the main part, this consists of transfers from over 100 concert tapes that I bought from Andre Fantarrow: who managed to compile a fantastic collection of almost-exclusively first- and second-gen recordings. Given that the majority date from the late eighties and early nineties, the represent, for the main part, a significant improvement over many of the higher-gen recordings that are in circulation for that period.  From time to time (and starting with this batch), I'll also drop in one from the tapes I collected in the early eighties. They're not as near the master as Andre's, but again, thirty years has seen a lot of degradation for many of the recordings of these gigs that are in circulation, so hopefully they'll complement the main collection.

There are some of Andre's tapes I will not be transferring and uploading here:

1. Any where the gold standard has already been established by Savage Jaw (unless it's a different recording of an SJ gig);
2. Recordings of standard FM broadcasts (such as MK 5-8-90, Montreal 83 and the like), that are in reasonably wide circulation;
3. Needledrops from vinyl (unless they, in themselves, have become rare and difficult to find); and
4. Gigs where a high-quality recording is already in wide circulation, where another version would simply add to the proliferation.

As it stands, it's looking like there will be a minimum of 14 batches of recordings to upload - but that could easily rise to 16 or 17 depending on how it goes. And then there's the VHS to DVD transfers as well!

In all cases, the recordings will come with full details of any tweaks or amendments I've had to make, and with double-sided CD art for every bootleg.

So what's in Volume 1:

HUG007CD - Tin Machine, Wolverhampton Civic Hall, 1991-11-02 - NEW RECORDING.
For me, this is the absolute jewel in this batch. The only copy I had of this concert was my second worst bootleg (SQ 1/10). This is a diamond. Beautiful sound and great atmosphere.

Nevertheless, when I transferred this the first time, I was a bit clumsy with the volume controls and it was too loud, to the point of distortion.  This is a new recording, with some dodgy sound in two songs reworked as well.  SQ 9/10.

HUG008CD - East Berlin, 1990-08-31
A landmark concert, irrespective of what the music's like! I had a fairly average recording of this one before. This one's really lovely sound (SQ 8½-9). Had to do a bit of work to resolve over-saturation on the first two songs, more than happy with the results.

HUG09CD - Iggy and Ziggy, Manchester Apollo, 1977-03-03
This one's one of mine, rather than one of Andre's. I got it in 83 from an Iggy specialist in Stoke, and listening again, I guess it's closer to the master than I ever realised: maybe 3rd or 4th gen. Typical of its age, but a decent, knockabout concert.

HUG010CD - Slane Castle, 1987-07-11
Huge recording (over 900Mb of FLAC). This one required a fair bit of editing and tidying up, and Heroes is a bit of a mess. But overall I'd say it's about an 8½/10, with the second disc a little better than the first.

HUG011CD - Edinburgh, 1990-03-23 AND 24
Two nights at the Royal Highland Exhibition Centre at Ingliston, Edinburgh. For anyone who's got the "Ingliston" bootleg of the first night, this is from a different source tape. The first night had hiss on the tape run-out, which suggested that it may have been a rare higher-gen recording than most of Andre's. It's a decent recording, but needed a couple of major repairs that are a distance from perfect. The second night is the key recording. As well as being the less-frequently seen of the two, it's a really unusual setlist (opens with Blue Jean) and is a beautiful recording.

So that's the first batch. If you want tracklistings or any details, the text file has everything in it.

Notes

RERECORDED SINCE ORIGINALLY INCLUDED IN HG1.
Tape starts way way too quiet.  The first minute was just audience chatter, so I chopped it.  When the band starts, it's a good 12 seconds till it's up to the right volume, so I've done some boosting, but couldn't go any further without adding a lot of hiss.
Tape flip between Under The God and You Belong In Rock & Roll - seamless.
Right channel is shot on Shopping For Girls and A Big Hurt - left channel copied with 0.002 offset.  Goldwave Stereo Center tool then used to boost sides.
Second tape flip in crowd noise between A Big Hurt and Sorry.
Encore break gap @ 11:23 in Heaven's In Here simply removed.

20 Panic In Detroit
21 The Jean Genie/Gloria

Fix notes:

The first 6:40 or so on this recording was over-saturated.  About 15 seconds into Rebel Rebel the taper clearly realised this, as there were two seconds of extreme quiet followed by a realistic level for the rest of the recording.

I cut the oversaturated section and ran it through the declipper function in iZotope RX, which restores the wave peaks.  It was successful.  I then restored this to the start of the recording and fixed the two ultra-quiet seconds in Rebel Rebel, in Goldwave, as best as I could.  Pretend you don't know I did it, and you won't notice anything!

Tape flip between Ziggy and China Girl, so beginning of China Girl is clipped.

26 White Light/White Heat
27 Let's Dance
28 Fame
29 Time
30 Blue Jean
31 Modern Love

Fix notes:

The big issue with this tape is that it was running slow, dropping pitch by slightly over a semitone.  Speed corrected by a factor of 106% - reducing overall time by 7:43.

One done, this was still quite a messy tape.  Gaps were removed from between tracks 13 & 14 on disc 1, and tracks 8 & 9 on disc 2, without any loss of music
Gaps were removed from between tracks 8 & 9 on disc 1 and tracks 3 & 4 and 13 & 14 with some loss of the beginning of the second song in each case.
There were repairs found between tracks 10 & 11 on disc 1 and tracks 14 & 15 on disc 2, but I allowed these to stand as they were.
The join between 87 & Cry and Heroes, however, was very untidy.  The start of Heroes is clipped and in addition, there is then a sequence of a number of pauses, with some tape wobble.  I have left these as they appeared, but the first minute or so of Heroes is untidy.

22 Heroes
23 Band intros
24 The Jean Genie
25 Pretty Pink Rose
26 Modern Love

Fix notes:

23rd March:

Main issue was massive volue drops in two locations.  Volume fixes were applied to a 55-second section at the end of Queen Bitch and beginning of Fashion, and a 56-second section during Stay.  Resultant hiss was resolved by iZotope RX denoiser tool and Goldwave hiss removal respectively.  A further boost was applied to the opening of Space Oddity, no hiss resultant.
Tape joins were applied between Life On Mars? and Blue Jean, and The Jean Genie and Pretty Pink Rose with no loss of music.
Repairs to gaps were made at 54 seconds in Space Oddity and 15 and 48 seconds in Blue Jean.
Old joins, apparently in original tape, were found between Blue Jean and Let’s Dance, and between Young Americans and Panic In Detroit - all were left alone.
The muffled sound at the beginning of Blue Jean (48 seconds) and Panic In Detroit (trivial) was on the source tape.

24th March

Only fix required was at around 4 seconds into Station To Station for tape flip - minor loss of music.
