My ticketed seat was actually section 222, Row D - Seat 5, but when I realized
during the Mammoth set I would be squeezed between two very large men, I looked
for an empty. I found one in the row below on an aisle still in perfect line
with the side hanging stack. I made this decision 2 minutes before the lights
went down! I had no one to my right (an aisle) and no one to my left the entire
show. I did have 2 women below me who were chatting occasionally, but they were
so quiet, its very hard to pick up on this. I have never seen GNR, but they
have always been a bucketlist band for me. Im not a huge fan, but love the
debut and select cuts from the Illusions. I actually dig quite a few on Chinese
Democracy, as well. I was very happy to see the title track and "Better" in the
set. The ticket was a small fortune, so Im not quite sure if I would go see them
again, but they more than impressed me. I had heard Axl had fallen off with his
vocals, but he sounded great for a near 60 year old. For this band to come out
and put on a 3+ hour set featuring nearly 30 songs is very admirable. If you're
a fan and havent seen them since Slash rejoined, what are you waiting for?
While I didnt really enjoy hearing "Wichita Lineman" during the show, on
playback its been growing on me. It has become a late highlight of an already
incredible show. It was also a treat getting the tour debut of "Coma" as that
has always been a favorite of mine.
One final note, the sound seems to improve 15 minutes in around "Double Talkin'
Jive". The first few songs sounded a tad off with the vocals higher in the mix
than they should have been. Thankfully, everything eventually balances out and
the remaining (almost) 3 hours sounds great.
Mammoth WVH opened [recorded].
