"In 1982, a young Swede named Yngwie Malmsteen sent a demo tape to Mike Varney, who had a column in Guitar Player magazine and also owned a record label called Shrapnel Music. The rest, as they say, is history."
This is the demo tape Yngwie sent to Mike Varney for inclusion in his Guitar Player Magazine "Spotlight" column. He was 19 when he sent it, it appeared in the February 1983 issue.
This recording's source was my low generation cassette (Maxell XLII)... I captured it using a fairly crappy Roxio capture device, removed a layer of tape hiss with Audacity, and tracked it with CD WAV... At some point I may get a much nicer interface; and when that happens I may attempt to pull a better capure from my cassette... Meanwhile I haven't seen this on any trackers, please enjoy it for what it is :-)
My cassette was labeled like so:
Black Star
Now Your Ships Are Burned
Electric Duet
Plague in Lucifer's Mind
Far Beyond the Sun
Jammin' the Night Away
Merlin's Castle
Air
Soldier Without Faith
Improvised Solo
Dead Sun

I have to say it was great hearing Tom sound this freaking amazing after the trouble he had. This show rocked. It was cold that night. -30 degrees F? Something like that.
I sat up in the balcony getting pretty drunk with some friends while Steve taped down on the floor. Good times... Good times.
If you're ever in Fairbanks, you should probably go to the Loon. This was on the indoor stage obviously, but there's also an outdoor stage for summer shows.

Back to the hair metal as I present a late 80's/early 90's band that was very much maligned.
They were accused of being a Zeppelin ripoff, but I always thought that Kingdom Come was underrated. Yes, the influences were there, but I felt they had some pretty good riffs, and Lenny Wolf was a solid (if unoriginal) vocalist
I got this on a CDR trade earlier this year as a 2 disc set, but I ran it through Wav editor to split a couple of tracks and to take out about 10 minutes of dead time near the end. Once I did, it fit onto one CD.

This is one of my favorite shows from Cinderella's 2002 tour. It is one of the few recorded headlining shows from that year, so it's slightly longer than the set they were playing on the Hollyweird tour opening for Poison that summer with Faster Pussycat and Winger (i.e. it includes a drum solo and a jam over the outro to Love Gone Bad).

6. How Many More Times
The audience tape begins with a lengthy introduction of the band.
The levels fluctuate wildly during Train Kept a Rollin'.
Plant, Jones, and Bonzo play an excellent bluesy jam, in which Jones shows off his chops,
while Page changes a broken string. Bonzo loses the snares from his snare drum during I Can't Quit You Baby.
It sounds as if the band is about to play Communication Breakdown right after the bow solo in Dazed and Confused.
There's something wrong with Page's equipment near the end of the song, causing his guitar to drop out for the last verse.
How Many More Times includes an extended jam/guitar solo, but the band seems to get lost a few times.
The audience tape ends with another lengthy stage announcement.
The soundboard tape is a great, if a bit bass-heavy, broadcast master.
The audience tape is terribly hissy and muffled. What a contrast.

5. Communication Breakdown
The tape starts with Plant mentioning a forty-five minute delay.
His voice breaks a couple times in Train Kept a Rollin',
but it doesn't slow him down.
He's warmed up by I Can't Quit You Baby, which draws shouts from the crowd.
Page's fingers get a bit sticky in the last solo.
As Long as I Have You has a frantic intro. Bonzo is attacking his drums nonstop.
Page's playing is aggressive in the solo. Plant is going wild, telling the audience to "sock it to me."
An excellent version of I Just Want to Make Love to You is included before the last verse.
There's a tongue in cheek intermission jam before Plant introduces You Shook Me, "despite Che Guevara."
Page's guitar tone is very loud and abrasive. The short show ends with Communication Breakdown, which has a Hendrix-inspired intro.
The tape is noisy, but clear with Page and Plant again up front and Bonzo and Jones buried somewhere in the back.

7. I Can't Quit You

9. You Shook Me
Plant thanks the audience for their patience before Train Kept a Rollin'.
Page's guitar licks sound like razor blades in I Can't Quit You Baby. Dazed and Confused is dedicated to "the young ladies working the strobes."
Page slaps the strings aggressively during the bow solo. His guitar tone is dirty and gritty in You Shook Me.
The tape is hissy and a bit muddy with Page overpowering the rest of the band.

What we already know:
In the year 2002 or 2003, several multitrack and a few stereo master tapes with several hours of unreleased Sabbath's demos and a live recording were first discovered by Simon Platz while doing an audit. He contacted Steve Hammonds and asked if he was interested in them. Hammonds said yes. The included live show tape box said nothing but the tape speed. It was only later that someone labeled it 'Live 1970'.
In January of 2004, the tapes were transferred to 8 CDs (often referred to as the 'Steve Hammonds 8-CD set').
On October 5, 2009, captainsdead.com user 'gregor' first uploaded an MP3 version of the 1970 live recording on Captainsdead.com. At that point, the exact date and place of the show recorded was still unknown - the upload was called 'Sometime in 1970'.
On January 9 + 23, 2010, Youtube user '1970sabbathlive' uploaded two tracks of the show on Youtube. Recording date and place were still unknown.
Internet discusssions on the amazing new find on Youtube only seem to have started in October of 2010. The original Captainsdead download link was already dead.
In November and December 2010, Youtube user '1970sabbathlive' uploaded the remaining tracks of this show on Youtube. Asked by many people for an upload of the source, '1970sabbathlive' informed that he originally received the show in MP3 format. Then he converted that MP3 version to WAV, 'cleaned it up a little' in Audacity, converted the WAV files to FLAC and shared them on the Deep Purple Hub and possibly elsewhere. That MP3-sourced, 'cleaned-up' FLAC version is now all over the internet and served as the source of ALL commercial bootlegs that were released shortly afterwards. Asked for an upload of the 'original', unedited MP3 files, '1970sabbathlive' never gave an answer.
On December 5, 2010, Sabbath collector 'Megalomaniac' finished and published a PDF file called 'Possible dates & venues of the unknown Black Sabbath 1970 SBD recording'. Based on the available knowledge about early Sabbath tourdates, as well as on an analysis of variations in Ozzy's lyrics as heard on available bootlegs from the early years (e.g. in 'War Pigs', a song which changed a lot lyricwise), it concluded that "1970-06-28 (or 1970-07-03) Ciney and 1970-08-31 Montreux are the most probable guesses so far".
On December 20, 2010, 'Megalomaniac' released another PDF called 'The Riddle is solved: Unknown 1970 Sabbath SBD is 1970-08-31 Montreux'. It was based on the work of many people, some of them renowned Sabbath collectors - including several Frech-speaking collectors, one of which recognized the announcer's voice. Several people then confirmed that the announcer was Claude Nobs who used to organise the Montreux festivals, which led to the conclusion that the recording originates from 1970-08-31 Montreux Casino.
This recording:
Long story short. For years, this recording had been hoarded. Then it got released in lossy quality around the world on multiple bootleg releases. Surprisingly, searching through my old CD collections, i noticed i had one Sabbath CD. It was not labeled at all. But obviously after the tunings i heard Ozzy quoting 'Paranoid' as a 'new' song, so i listened.
I wrote down the setlist and started searching through the internet. It was a soundboard recording, so i thought it had to be famous, and i was not wrong at all.
The setlist - including the tuning - matched the Montreux Casino recording. But i read that the recording was widely circulated as lossy, so i checked.
Based on the spectral and frecuency analysis, it was perfectly lossless. So i sent it to a very reliable source on Sabbath recordings and got their confirmation that it was indeed lossless.
Then i sent it to kneesfudd who helped me with the speed corrections and remastering. He sent me back the files and here they are for your enjoyment.
Thanks to kneesfudd for his help on this project, as well to all the persons who helped me to find information about the recording, the background info and anything else (you know who you are!).
