Review by OSWALD From Hotwacks:
Billed as home studio recordings from 1965-1975, this set is a pretty monumental collection of Townsend's demos. The nature of the material makes it impossible to tell how comprehensive it is, but a quick glance imparts that this collection very nicely supercedes a series of releases, both underground and sanctioned. As any Who fan knows, Townsend's home demos make for fascinating listening -- many of the arrangements, licks, and even vocal phrasing is already present on these rougher takes. Add to that a sort of home-made funkiness (think a more pissed-off, English version of the Band), and you have a set of recordings that stack up very well against their more familiar later, full-band versions. Townsend has leaked out this
sort of stuff on the SCOOP collections for some time, but those have always been piecemeal affairs -- one track from here, another from ten years later, synth instrumentals next to unreleased songs. This collection is wonderfully focused, chronological, and in pretty strong fidelity. The three Who benchmarks, TOMMY, WHO'S NEXT, and QUADROPHENIA, are well represented, as are a host of popular album and singles tracks in sketchbook form. The thrill of having these cuts in one place and in a reasonable order is indescribable. The drawbacks to this set are few -- sound quality is pretty consistant, the material is endlessly engaging. My one complaint is the packaging. A cool mini-poster of rare foreign EP sleeves is killer,
but there are no notes to put the cuts into context. That being said, it's pretty obvious where this stuff comes from, and it should be of major interest to Who buffs the world over. Pete's demo of "Empty Glass" might be the most intense thing he ever laid down...

Review by Matt Whipple from Hypertext Who:
This is another beautiful package from HIWATT! A super 5 CD set complete with a 9.5" x 14" double-sided poster. The tracks are all PT demos presented in chronological order of when they were recorded. The back insert states: "ALL TRACKS RECORDED 1965-1975 BY PETE TOWNSHEND
IN HIS HOME STUDIOS: OLD CHURCH STREET, CHELSEA AND TWICKENHAM". Although I doubt that any of the tracks for Who Are You were recorded prior to 1975. The majority of these tracks were taken from Pete's Scoop series, The Lifehouse Chronicles and Pete's website. Disc 1 actually has a 26th song not listed on the disc - Accidents (this was written by Pete for the Thunderclap Newman release - w. Speedy Keene and a very young Jimmy McCollough a lead guitarist). On Disc 2, last 2 seconds of track 3  starts to play Jaguar. Disc 5, Track 18 - should be No Road Romance NOT No Road Running as stated on the back scan. The others are from various bootlegs still not officially released. An initial listen reveals excellent sound quality.

AWESOME & AMAZING Sound and Music from Pete Townsend all in one place in chronological order
A MUST HAVE for any WHO and/or Pete Townsend Fan

Notes:
The Who in 1989...the Who on ice...the vegas show...Many things have been said about this tour, most not good. I enjoyed these shows though. It was a celebration of the Who's career played out in stadiums mostly with a great band that was, for the most part, The Deep End with John and Roger on board. The great Simon Phillips on drums, the great Kick Horns, Jodie Linscott on percussion. The only weak link in this band was Steve Bolton on guitar and the tour's finest moments were when PT took over on electric. The shows were comprised of two sets, which started out totalling about 3 hours before being pared down after about 3 weeks on the road. Roger was in great voice, John never better on bass and Pete alternated between acoustic guitar and electric guitar and sometimes really PLAYED the electric guitar! I recorded these shows on a new Panasonic dat deck I bought for this tour. With the exception of my car it was the most expensive thing I had ever bought. This middle night of three at Alpine Valley sounds better today than I remember it being at the time. We had great seats this night, but I'm not sure why we didn't get to them until part way through the Underture portion of Amazing Journey. Also Magic Bus at the beginning of the 2nd set was marred by humidity playing havoc with the head on the dat deck, so you get some chopped up segments and some digi-noise which clears up before Baba O'Riley, the 2nd song.

Another city that had long supported the Who getting screwed by making fans go to this awful venue for their shows. The Who played the first concert at this stadium back in December of '75, and they played here again to a half-sized audience in December of '79. This time they were back to the full capacity stadium and they delivered a great show featuring Pete doing 'Give Blood', a great 'I'm A Man', 'Dig' and 'Hey Joe'.

The Who 1973-12-02 The Forum, Montreal, Canada

The Who

A fair audience recording. The tail end of 'Love, Reign O'er Me' is cut and there are some minor glitches during the first ten seconds of 'See Me, Feel Me', but that's about it. This one's notable for having the last performance of 'Helpless Dancer' in this era...not to mention a legendary hotel wrecking after the show ("Remember the place in Canada that we smashed?").

8. I'm One
9. Helpless Dancer
10. 5:15
11. Sea and Sand

Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978.  His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity.  In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes.  He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings.  In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.

He recorded many of the major 70's bands:  Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar" acts.

Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated.  Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes.  No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers.  Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.

Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community.  Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.

Also of note My Generation features a Pete Townshend improvisation called Blue, Black, White and Magic Bus features another Pete Townshend improvisation called London Blues.

The first of a great string of shows in Passaic, New Jersey and New York City--the Who's first American dates with Kenny Jones on drums.

It was great to see the band back after Keith's death and they play these shows as if they had something to prove! Pete in particular was (as a Dr. Billy says clearly on the tape) "burning" and "on fire." This first of two Capitol Theater shows served as a great warm-up for the following five nights at Madison Square Garden.

This part of the band's career has not gotten the attention it deserves but the playing here is as fresh and to some degree experimental (note the improvisations above) as the band would ever be on stage. While we all maintain a passion for '76, the truth is the sets didn't vary much and relied heavily familiar material (e.g. Tommy, due in part to the release of the film).1979 brought back material from Quadrophenia and unplayed Who Are You songs like "Sister Disco and "Trick of the Light," the latter, at these '79 shows, featured John on eight-string bass and Pete on four-string bass.

The '79 tour also marked a second phase for JEMS in terms of recording the Who even more prolifically than we had before, as J began to follow the band around in earnest. More to come.

Notes:
The second night of seven NJ/NYC shows carries over the same energy as the first night's show. Like most Who shows, "My Generation" is the jumping-off point for some great jamming. This show features Roger doing a little bit of "Relay" leading into Pete's "You've Got Rock and Roll" which will appear later in the week as well at MSG. This is followed by "Blue Black White" which in one form or another is played at all the NJ/NY shows.

We long believed Pete recorded demos of some of the improvisations done on this tour: "Blue Black White" (and later Red), "I'm London (from the first night in Passaic, not to be confused "London Blues"), "That's Rock and Roll" (this night played as "You've Got Rock and Roll"), "I Am An Animal" and 'Cat's In The Cupboard'(the latter two would appear on Pete's solo masterpiece Empty Glass). Later in the year they would add "How Can You Do It Alone" and "Dance It Away" (later recorded by the Who and Pete respectively).

It is amusing to note that the band seems to know Free's "Alright Now" better than its own "Pictures Of Lily!"  If only they'd been using Teleprompters then. They close the show with a great "Big Boss Man" which appears at this show in it's entirety for the first time.

Notes:
JEMS master recording. This is a very good to excellent sounding recording. This was (unknown to everyone at the time) Keith Moon's final show he would ever play on North American soil and the last night of the entire 76 tour. This show also features only 1 of 2 times they ever played Who Are You while Keith was still alive though the version here is in it's embryonic stages as part of the improv section of My Generation. Also included are some pictures of the show from the collection of Murray Crevits.

"One of my favorite Who shows ever! A great night that featured Pete singing an early improv on 'Who Are You'. Pete smashed his guitar this night reportedly to avoid playing a encore that was to include Keith singing 'Barbara Ann' (according to Keith...)"

Notes:
It should be illegal to make people travel this far for their 'local' show! This 'shed' in the middle of nowhere served as the location for the Who's Chicago area shows on the '89 tour. It was sad that a city like Chicago, which had supported the Who from the beginning of their American touring, was forced to travel here for their shows. This was one of my all-time least favorite venues. Overflowing portable toilets in the parking lot from a run of Grateful Dead shows that had been there earlier in the week. The tape joins the show in progress because the box office couldn't find our tickets...no good memories here except for the performance itself which was great.

JEMS master recording and excellent sounding recording. This is the first time(August 2009) a transfer of this recording has been made available directly from the master cassette. All songs are complete with the only cut at the tape flip during the audience cheering between Magic Bus/Amazing Journey.

After about a seven week layoff The Who returned to the stage for the first night of their 'Worldwind Tour' which consisted of 2 shows at the Capital Centre just outside Washington D.C. and 2 shows in Florida. Despite being a little rusty this was a great show, as was the following night. This was my first long road trip to see The Who, and this first night I was in the eighth row, on Pete's side of the stage. This is one of my best Who recordings. I've included a couple of photos I took during Sparks this night.

NOTES: Average audience recording, some tape hiss (I don't know the tape generation) and some cuts between songs.
Both discs were filled with another source (same tape from a higher gen or different ?) where the cuts don't occure.
It is from the same tape source than the version seeded before on LLR, but of a different/parallele generation and with less cuts.
After comparison, some songs sound better on this, others sound worst (dropout in sound level or more hiss).
This version might be usefull for a matrix of both versions, but I don't have the tools to do it properly.
But it'd be better to find back the master tape, or a closest gen tape !

Roger Daltrey 1981-1985 The Talented mr. Daltrey(Italian and others European TV)

Roger Daltrey 1981-1985
Italian and others European TV

Source: various Generation VHS >  VDR  Authored DVD
provided by Anna and Luciano,
the greatest and most honest ones among the italian fans!

PAL DVD
SOURCE TV
artwork: yes
menu: yes

This long awaited compilation is a Christmas gift for all the fans worldwide.
During the 80's The Who members increased their solo carriers. Roger Daltrey came in italy twice.
His first trip was to promote the McVicar album and feature film. Both are superb products, ready to be
rerediscovered to those who understimate as well as all his solo work.
In 1984 he came back to some appearances with lipsynch performances of Walking... and Parting..
Enjoy those clips, the wonderful haircut and the silver lamè suit( directly from the Shea Stadium).
Track 9 is an absolute mistery. I really don't know where it's from. Broadcasted on an independent Italian channel
exactly as you see it, audio is not sinchronised with the video and it seems to be an interview at the beginning.
Track 8 is excract from Dutch TV, probably a quiz game, the match winner sings with Roger his old hit Givin'..
The performance of John is a real standout. I can remember me at the age of 13 watching this man in his diabolic
red suit, doing this wonderful song, his pop\rock masterpiece. We all love The Ox, the rock legend but this is another matter..
I've included this clip here because there is so few material about John to compile a dvd about him.
This is a Pearl.
There are many Who fans here in Italy, some are special persons some not.
This is dedicated to Annamarina (Anna from Italy, for Hers friend) and to Luciano (Dip)
They gave me this material, they gather it trough the years. I had some but this is, really.an upgrade.
I won't do it without their help.
If you have any Roger material, please, share it here on LLR.

To Mr. Roger Daltrey, the greatest singer in rock music. Enjoy it you too.

Marco
