Another high energy Drama show, the band sound like they can't wait to get started. The recording was a semi tone too high, that's one fret on the guitar
to you and me. Did a pitch correction and joined a few tracks and split some others. Lowered the treble a bit,a couple of fades and that's all folks.....
New artwork included with newly found Drama pictures from Newcastle City Hall 1980 a great job by Steve23yh.

from the same guy and same source.

I´ve already put up Motley & Alice 1987 shows.

New azimuth adjusted transfer...

The Zoo Amphitheater ( OKC Zoo) was always one of my favorite places to tape because I always knew I could get a great capture there.  General Admission with no seats just a sloping hill from the bottom to the top (at least back in the 1980's).  As long as I got there early I'd park myself in front of the PA and away we'd go.  The only thing you had to watch for is that the shows always began before the sun went down so you had to be aware of being spotted early on and the occasional drunk.

I shared a version of this show back around 2006 that was not azimuth adjusted and thought it was time to re-visit and transfer correctly.

Great show and great capture on this oneÉsamples below.

Some notes about the post mastering. The feed was out of phase, I inverted the phase on the left channel and since it is PRE-FM, added a little compression and did some minor EQ'ing. Exported the file and then split via CDWAV and did some fade in and outs via Wavelab.

Taper's notes:
We each had identical Craig recorders (see attachment), with a small handheld mike. We also had 5 extra C batteries in our pockets, crazy.  I think my friend put it on a computer and then transferred it to CD.  One of those stories I tell, another favorite of mine, is from a Black Sabbath show (unannounced) at the Whiskey A GoGo on the Sunset Strip. It's a very famous club, known for the DOORS being the house band.  Don't ask me how I found out about BS playing their. It was just fate. They wore white tuxedos. Unbelievable. We were freaking out and trying not to show it. We were right in front of the stage. To make a long story short... during a drum solo, his drum stick broke and flew forward, yup, right into my chest and I caught it. I still have it (see attachment). That's the truth and I'm sticking to it.  Whew!

Uploader's notes:

Remarks:
=======
The picture quality is really great considering the age of the video. The audio is less good.

Video and audio seem to get slightly out of sync (not throughout the video), but in places. However, this also might only be a personal impression and is not really disturbing.

At least this is the only real live Elf video footage I know, and I thought it might be something for collectors.

Looking at the video as a historic document I left it as it was (is) without doing any corrections to it.

I've been downloading the '73 feast of shows to compare to my sources if I didn't already have that particular version.  To my ears the '73 Toronto show shared here in 2006 and brought alive again during this flood is way over processed and sounds like a straight noise reduction tool was used to take out the hiss causing that noise reduction "swish".  This did take out the hiss but also took out the high end, It sounds boosted and closer which noise reduction will do but also sounds all mid range to me.

So whatever your preference is I decided to share this unprocessed version I transferred years ago without any noise reduction.
I might have used a touch of eq'ing on it but I just don't remember, unfortunately I didn't keep as good of transfer notes as tape trading notes before I got serious about the transfers.

The source I used for this transfer was very good with little hiss to begin with, my personal taste is I prefer this version as it has the high end restored and is a straight document of what the taper captured that night.

The one issue with this one is it is missing Neil announcing Time Fades Away but no music is missing.

I don't know the generation and kept detailed trade notes back in the day but there is no generation noted on this one.

Samples below so you can decide to download or not...

The first day of summer presented a rare treat for Canberra's metal community: a single concert featuring both Paul Di'Anno and Blaze Bayley, performing only Iron Maiden numbers.

This was my first and presumably last time seeing Paul Di'Anno.  Unfortunately, it was memorable for the wrong reasons: Di'Anno's voice was shot and he indulged in lengthy, crass monologues in between tracks.  At first, Di'Anno claimed that his loss of voice was a mystery, but later on he admitted that he had stayed out late drinking the night before with Stephen King of Stand Alone. Well gee thanks, Paul.

To be fair, Di'Anno's performance did improve somewhat after a few songs, and he made a good fist of Remember Tomorrow and Killers.  Also, Di'Anno's final effort, dedicated to Bon Scott, was performed well and with feeling.  Nonetheless, the contrast between Di'Anno and Paul Mario Day - not to mention Blaze - was depressingly stark.

Happily, Blaze put on a tremendous show that did justice to Maiden's legacy.  I've always thought Blaze was made the scapegoat for Maiden's creative slump in the '90s, and he certainly proved his worth as a frontman in Canberra.  Not only did Blaze produce excellent versions of underrated songs like Virus and Como Estais Amigos, he also made some other, mediocre material sound quite reasonable.

Also, Blaze soldiered on through an early power failure and ongoing technical problems, and was not at all discouraged by the thinness of the crowd relative to Di'Anno.  On the contrary, he behaved as if he were in a large venue, demanding crowd participation just as Bruce Dickinson would.

Thumbs up, too, to the local band who backed both Blaze and Di'Anno.  With the exception of the bassist, they were the same professional outfit that supported The Ripper last May.

While my recordings came out pretty well, there is continual background static through the first three-quarters of the Blaze show.  My friend Navigator kindly produced two masters, one with the static left in and one with the static removed.  I include both versions here, so you can decide which one sounds best.

Finally, thanks to kravad for his constructive criticism of my Ripper recording.  This capture is a marked improvement because of it.

Cheers,

Calvinist.
