notes: Great, rare performance of 'Coma.' Axl says that there are 5 times as many people at this show than the last time they played Tokyo. Before 'Double Talkin' Jive,' Axl speaks through an interpreter to say that the Japanese concert promoters lied to the band about certain stage requirements GN'R asked for. 'Wild Horses' is dedicated to the Japanese customs officials. Axl mentions that some people might have a version of 'Don't Cry' on a really old demo tape.

At the request of Steve Hopkins himself, JEMS is pleased to present this legendary double bill of Bruce Springsteen and Bonnie Raitt for the first time "as it happened." Our torrent contains every minute Hopkins recorded that fateful night in Cambridge 39 years ago next week, from Springsteen's soundcheck through the entire early show of the night featuring Springsteen's complete set followed by Bonnie Raitt's complete set. Both artists performed a 10 PM late show as well, but there are no known recordings of those sets, because, as Hopkins notes below, he was unsuccessful getting back into the venue.

The late show is, of course, the stuff of legend, as it was that (presumably unrecorded) set that prompted then-critic and future Bruce manager Jon Landau to write a rave review of Springsteen in The Real Paper which changed both of their lives forever. For years, fans sentimentally attributed this recording to the late show Landau saw, but it is in fact the early set. Landau's review says Springsteen performed "three new songs, all of them street trash rockers"--this set features no new songs, save for the only known recording of the wonderful cover, "I Sold My Heart to the Junkman."

As Hopkins' himself wrote in his original post of the show: "This is a new transfer of a recording that has been in circulation for many years, my first Springsteen show. I got in early with a friend who had a press pass. It was a general admission show and the first few rows were roped off for the press, so I sat down front and center and stayed there for the entire early show. Contrary to [long-held assumptions], this is the complete early show and "Rosalita" was the final song of the set. Unfortunately, they cleared the house after the early show, and as the crowd was lined up around the block for the late show, I was unable to get back in. In the span of about 26 hours, I saw Boz Scaggs, Steve Miller, Bruce Springsteen and Bonnie Raitt, all for under $10."

Steve first torrented both sets from his master cassettes five years ago, but that lineage went from cassette to DAT to CD-R then ripped back into FLAC. This is the first time Steve's master tapes have been digitized directly.

Arguably, this is one of the best audience recordings of the Boom Carter era of the E Street Band, not up to Hopkins' later standard when his gear improved, but still a wonderful snapshot of an under-documented era just the same. It's hard to imagine an opening act whose set includes two 13-minute songs and another that's nearly 10 minutes long, then again this was 1974. Hopkins points out a "loud electrical buzz emanating from the stage throughout the show, mostly noticeable during quieter segments." It is worse in Bonnie's set than Bruce's, and you can tune it out, but it is annoying at times. Samples provided.

Performances of those epic songs--"New York City Serenade," "Kitty's Back" and "Rosalita" respectively--are particularly strong here, but what I took special note of is "Saint in the City," which features a kind of spoken-word rap at the end that echoes the one on the circulating alternate take of the track from the Greetings sessions.

What's also gone under appreciated is the wonderful, talkative performance Raitt turns in this night. In hindsight, the Harvard Square Theatre show feels like a major Bruce Springsteen moment, but Raitt was the headliner and her star was rising faster than Bruce's at the time. Here's she's touring in support of her third album, Takin' My Time, released the previous October. The set is laden with wonderful covers of songs penned by Randy Newman, Jackson Browne, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Chris Smither and Mose Allison to name a few.

But even Bonnie recognized something special had occured. Before her first song she says of Springsteen, "He's got the most incredible band and he's one of the most amazing people I've ever heard. I just had to say that. He's a real hard act to follow."

Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity. In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes. He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings. In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.

He recorded many of the major 70's bands: Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar" acts.

Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.

Review by OSWALD From Hotwacks:
Billed as home studio recordings from 1965-1975, this set is a pretty monumental collection of Townsend's demos. The nature of the material makes it impossible to tell how comprehensive it is, but a quick glance imparts that this collection very nicely supercedes a series of releases, both underground and sanctioned. As any Who fan knows, Townsend's home demos make for fascinating listening -- many of the arrangements, licks, and even vocal phrasing is already present on these rougher takes. Add to that a sort of home-made funkiness (think a more pissed-off, English version of the Band), and you have a set of recordings that stack up very well against their more familiar later, full-band versions. Townsend has leaked out this
sort of stuff on the SCOOP collections for some time, but those have always been piecemeal affairs -- one track from here, another from ten years later, synth instrumentals next to unreleased songs. This collection is wonderfully focused, chronological, and in pretty strong fidelity. The three Who benchmarks, TOMMY, WHO'S NEXT, and QUADROPHENIA, are well represented, as are a host of popular album and singles tracks in sketchbook form. The thrill of having these cuts in one place and in a reasonable order is indescribable. The drawbacks to this set are few -- sound quality is pretty consistant, the material is endlessly engaging. My one complaint is the packaging. A cool mini-poster of rare foreign EP sleeves is killer,
but there are no notes to put the cuts into context. That being said, it's pretty obvious where this stuff comes from, and it should be of major interest to Who buffs the world over. Pete's demo of "Empty Glass" might be the most intense thing he ever laid down...

This is another beautiful package from HIWATT! A super 5 CD set complete with a 9.5" x 14" double-sided poster. The tracks are all PT demos presented in chronological order of when they were recorded. The back insert states: "ALL TRACKS RECORDED 1965-1975 BY PETE TOWNSHEND
IN HIS HOME STUDIOS: OLD CHURCH STREET, CHELSEA AND TWICKENHAM". Although I doubt that any of the tracks for Who Are You were recorded prior to 1975. The majority of these tracks were taken from Pete's Scoop series, The Lifehouse Chronicles and Pete's website. Disc 1 actually has a 26th song not listed on the disc - Accidents (this was written by Pete for the Thunderclap Newman release - w. Speedy Keene and a very young Jimmy McCollough a lead guitarist). On Disc 2, last 2 seconds of track 3 starts to play Jaguar. Disc 5, Track 18 - should be No Road Romance NOT No Road Running as stated on the back scan. The others are from various bootlegs still not officially released. An initial listen reveals excellent sound quality.

This project was created to commemorate the passing of Brian Jones in the night of July 2 to July 3, 1969.
This 1967 European tour was the last one he participated in.

PARIS

11th April 1967: Paris, France, L'Olympia (1st or 2nd show)

This show is the most know from this tour and I used it as reference.
It was broadcasted on April 16, 1967 by French radio ‘Europe 1’ in their program 'Musicorama' (version #1).
Subsequently it appeared on lots of bootlegs in particular on DAC 190 ‘F***in And S***in’.

In the Seventies, 6 tracks were re-broadcasted in AM quality, they appeared on VGP 248 ‘Ready Steady Stones’ (I call it version #2).

In the Nineties five tracks were re-broadcast in FM quality (version #3). They appeared on VGP 101 ‘A Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss’ with comments from a well known French actor: Jean-Claude Brialy (I call it version #3).

Part I: merge between VGP/DAC and Teague Raw:
The result that pleased me the most was to merge version #3 from VGP 101 or version #1 from DAC 190 with the version #1 proposed by Teague Raw (TR) several years ago (used as speed reference).

i ain't no romeo, soomlos, schubert, bach, spot or any of those other master tapers, but i enjoyed the show, Mark joining Bob for these songs, and especially for Blind Willie and Things have changed, is like a life long dream come through.

If it had not been for the gestapo security guard sitting 1meter away from me, who kept talking into his walkie, and had the bloody thing on vol. 11, i would have had the perfect night.
this same guy actually prevented two whole blocks of people from going front row during LARS; but hte left hand side of the audience WAS allowed, so now there was this bizarre gap between the people at the barrier and us in second row....
wankers! (you can actually hear me cursing at the guy,..never done that before whilst recording, but this one....)
as of the 5th song i turned the rec. volume down a bit, as it sounded like it was getting louder, and i wanted to prevent unnecesarry overdrive.
Still, i think i can say this is a legendary night. enjoy it!

Empress Valley released their first Queen bootleg earlier this year, and it's a monster ! It's a box set containing nine discs of all four Tokyo shows on the A Night At The Opera tour, six of which are previously uncirculated pre-LP tapes that were first released only on vinyl in incomplete form over 40 years ago. Only 100 copies of the box set were pressed.

Nearly half of the April 1 show was heard on the "Invite You To A Night At The Budokan" LP, and a poor sounding second audience source circulated for years. EV use the original uncut source. Father To Son and See What A Fool I've Been aren't listed on back cover, but the recording is complete. The first four minutes of Liar are seamlessly spliced in from a third audience source. This is the most interesting show of the bunch, and even though it's transferred/mastered a bit too hot (particularly on disc 2), after all these years it's amazing to finally hear the entire concert in this quality.

This is Queen coming off their creative peak and at the top of their game. Sound quality is pretty near excellent throughout.

Per Eriks notes: Fryshuset was one of the worst places to tape back in the days. Very crowded and hard to find a good spot to tape from. If I remember correctly this show was sold out. Recorded from the back.

Bruce Springsteen 1974-05-09 Cambridge, MA(Feel The Spirit)

this is a new transfer of a recording that has been in circulation
for many years...my first springsteen show, i got in early with
a friend who had a press pass. it was a general admission show
and the first few rows were roped off for the press, so i sat
down front and center and stayed there for the entire early show.
contrary to the misinformation in brucebase, this is the complete
early show and rosalita was the final song of the set. unfortunately,
they cleared the house after the early show, the crowd was lined up
around the block for the late show and i was unable to get back
in. in the span of about 26 hours, i saw boz scaggs, steve miller,
bruce springsteen and bonnie raitt, all for under $10.
