COMMENT
Due to the sheer amount of material on here I'll have to break this down and deal with each show respectively and comment on it in comparison to the previously circulating versions. Firstly, the 10th October 1988 show. Previously circulating on the fan release '10/10/88 Washington' which was already fairly decent. The biggest problem was that the recording was incomplete and a small number of parts during the show were missing. Added to that (and probably more importantly) the quality of the recording deteriorated as it went along - starting as EX- and ending up as VG. This Free Boot Generation release features a far more complete show which lasts approx. 6 minutes longer and includes the complete 'Alphabet St.' (amongst others) which faded out prematurely on the fan release. The audio quality of this particular release is also a million miles removed from the previously circulating version with a vastly reduced crowd level and no deterioration as the show goes along. As with all plus points, there also follow minus points, and on this release there are a couple I should point out. The most serious is a rather obtrusive humming noise throughout both 'Little Red Corvette' and 'Controversy' which is slightly distracting - it lasts only the duration of these two songs, but it's worthy of mention. The other audio issue I should make mention of is a slight waviness on both 'Delirious' and 'Jack U Off' - again nothing major, but noticeable. The second Washington recording was circulating on the very enjoyable 'Lovesexy Washington' and the recording was already impressive. On the whole it was free of any glitches and/or problems and left me very little to comment on regarding sound issues. This release falls into the same bracket and there are really no problems I can comment on. The first half of the 11th October show is a superb recording and certainly amongst the best of the entire US leg. Prince's mic is amazingly clear and to the fore of the recording which picks up every breath and grunt - very impressive stuff. Unfortunately the second half of the show doesn't quite match the greatness and following on from the first half it probably sounds less good than it is. There is an audible hiss throughout the piano medley on Disc 4 and (as with the humming on Disc 1) can be a little intrusive after a few minutes - overall it would certainly not warrant an EX- grading on it's own. The shows themselves are excellent documents of the tour, and whilst they are back-to-back dates, each show does thankfully differ from the other. Obviously the inclusion of the piano medley during the second show is a major bonus, however the extremely rare inclusion of 'Irresistible Bitch' and 'Wade In The Water' during the first concert shouldn't be overlooked. It's hard to pick one show over the other however the 11th October concert slightly edges it as the performance is slightly more passionate and the crowd are very receptive. Disc 2 features a soundboard recording taken from a circulating video of 'Housequake' from LA, and Disc 4 features a Warner Brothers radio promo for the Lovesexy album lasting a little under a minute - both nice, worthy additions to the release. Overall this is a great 4cd, although maybe the sheer amount of material on here is a little scary. The quality of the recordings is far superior to the previously circulating versions and has made them obsolete - these are better quality and more complete - what more is there to say?
You are on a total roll lately plumdusty - each one of these Prince releases in particular is just so great. Thank you!
