The Lost Collins Era Live Archive
This set is thought as a companion to the Collins Era Live Archive, which featured an overview of the live recordings of the band during the “Collins Years”, 1976 - 1996. Unfortunately, not all material is available in satisfactory quality, and that’s where this addition tries to fill the gaps. One CD features Soundboard Recordings that are not of quality comparable to the FM and Pre-FM recordings featured on the Live Archive and therefore were left off that collection. Never-the-less, the soundboard recordings generally are of a much better quality than audience recordings, and therefore offers a valuable look into the live history of the band. The audience recordings are of a much more mixed quality, and therefore is mainly a subject for collectors.
This first disc includes soundboard recordings from the years 1977, 1978, 1981 and 1982. The songs chosen are a mixture of songs not present on other releases – Ballad Of Big, Your Own Special Way, and the medley of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway / Watcher Of The Skies – and classical genesis songs, that have been released from other tours, but are included here from later tours – thus, the 1982 tour was the last tour the band performed the classical Supper’s Ready in full length, and this wonderful soundboard recording is a great example of how Phil’s voice had matured since the early years in 1976 – 1977 but still was in incredible shape in the high register as well as the low. Also, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and I Know What I Like – two left-outs from the Abacab tour featured on the Three Sides Live release, are included here, the formed in medley with Behind The Lines and Duchess, as it was played on the tour.
Disc 1 ~ Soundboard Recordings
When choosing songs for such a collection, one will always have to make a cut so-me where, and leave off some material. In this case, I left off Who Dunnit? because it didn’t sit very well with the other tracks on the record, and because it is a track I know many fans have little love for. I left Down And Out off this disc, because there are no soundboard recordings of a decent performance of this song, whereas there is an excellent audience recording of a very nice performance – which I included on the other disc. I included some material that overlaps with previously released material – especially from the 1981 tour, where I could easily have left off Behind The Lines and Duchess, and still included The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway – but I found this performance very enjoyable, and therefore chose to include the songs as an entity, when there was room for it.
Enjoy, and remember – Always trade free with fans, never sell!

This first disc includes audience recordings from the years 1977, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1984. The songs includes some real rarities only performed live once or twice – like the Lilywhite Lilith – Wot Gorilla medley, Like It Or Not, Me And Virgil and Back In N.Y.C. Therefore, the quality is really mixed – including both recordings of decent or even very good recording sound – like the material from the fantastic Marquee Club audience recordings, but also other very nice first generation recordings from 1978 and 1980 – and then recordings of very mediocre quality or even downright poor quality – like the very muffled sound of the “Gorilla” medley and the even worse sound of Me And Virgil. Unfortunately, these are the only recordings we have to go by, and fortunately some of the songs are present in very nice quality in spite of the rarity of their performance, like Like It Or Not and Back In N.Y.C.
Disc 2 ~ Audience Recordings
Also included are a couple of medleys from the 1983 – 1984 tour. A large number of different medleys were played during this tour, and none of them are available from soundboard or FM sources. The two medleys chosen for this recording are quite different and include some songs only rarely included in these old medleys – like Ripples, Squonk and Behind The Lines. A number of tracks did not make it onto the disc – I would have like to include the wonderful and quite alternative recording of I Know What I Like from the Marquee club, and a more recent performance of Carpet Crawlers, but the running time of the disc did not allow that.
Enjoy, and remember – Always trade free with fans, never sell!
