I have been to a lot of shows, but none as emotional as this one. The Who
returned to Cincinnati for the first time in nearly 43 years and in doing so,
honored the victims (from the 1979 concert) and played for free donating
all of the proceeds to the P.E.M. Memorial Scholarship Fund in Finneytown.
11 scholarships awarded to seniors each and every year who pursue higher
education in the arts or music. 1 scholarship for each life lost on that
tragic day in 1979. Roger spoke, Pete spoke and there were tributes. Before
the show began, Eddie Vedder came on the big screen and spoke of his own
experience of losing lives at a concert and sent Cincinnati his love. The
most emotional tribute of the night was a beautiful soliloquy played by Loren
Gold preceding "Love, Reign O'er Me". The stadium went dark showing each of
the 11 victims on the big screens. I had an older lady directly in front of
me break down in tears, security having to come over to console her. That
moment felt more like a funeral than a rock concert. But, at the same time
it was an appropriate remembrance.
The recording went fairly well for a stadium show. I did have loud neighbors,
but I promise you, there was no escaping them! My original seats were roughly
28 rows behind where I ended up recording from and decided 15 minutes before
The Who took the stage they werent going to cut it. I did find some empties
in the far left front (section E) facing the side stack. I knew the sound
would be better there and when the band took the stage and I realized the PA
was lower than most stadium shows I had attended in the past, I was grateful
I moved up. iZotope RX 7 once again saves the day when it comes to excessive
nearby "whooo's!", screams and claps. The gentleman 2 seats down from me on
the left was pretty annoying throughout the entire show but thankfully cannot
be heard much on this recording. He does yell out from time to time at the start
of songs from excitement. Interestingly enough, he was alone, so Im not really
sure whom he was talking to. I guess himself? Please note, right before "The Real
Me", I moved out into the far left aisle to get away from Mr. Excitement and
the few female talkers behind me. The sound changes slightly, but is still pretty
consistent from the seat location. You'll notice the noise around me improves
during the final 44 minutes of the recording. I should have moved earlier! For
some reason, the security at TQL were very lax. No one in the aisles were told
to go back to their seats and people were smoking pot all over the place. If
you listen closely, Roger makes mention of this during the show. The band took
the stage at 830pm sharp (while still daylight) and left the stage at 1042pm.
One final note, the band were joined by a full orchestra (and choir) during all
but 5 songs. These were "The Seeker", "You Better You Bet", "Relay", "Won't Get
Fooled Again" & "Behind Blue Eyes'.
The local band, Safe Passage opened [not recorded].
