Jimi Hendrix Earthy Tones(Whoopy Cat)(SBD)

artist: JIMI HENDRIX
title: EARTH TONES (WHOOPY CAT)
lineage: SILVER > EAC > WAV > FLAC
quality: EX / SOUNDBOARD RECORDINGS
artwork: INCLUDED (300 dpi)

info (from back cover):
The following selections are from recently unearthed tapes and are presented here for the first time on CD.

tracks:
I'M A MAN / MANNISH BOY SESSIONS (January 7, 1970 - Record Plant Studios)

IZABELLA WITH PIANO (Aug. 28, 1969 - Record Plant Studios)

CALLING ALL DEVIL'S CHILDREN / STEPPIN' STONE / EZY RIDER JAM (Nov. 14, 1969 - Record Plant Studios)

POWER OF SOUL [aka: PAPER AIRPLANES] SESSIONS (Nov. 21, 1969 - Record Plant Studios)

Review:

Whoopy Kat is one of the leaders of quality ROIO releases, and Earth Tones is another in its catalog. More Band Of Gypsys
studio material presented this time. Some tracks that would eventually come out on posthumous releases such as Blues, and
some that have no official release as of this writing. BOG was less into straight ahead Rock and Roll than it was more funk
styled rhythms and playing. You definitely hear more bass guitar up front than in his other material. I'm A Man/Mannish Boy
sessions shows a song in progress, working out chord progressions, changes, etc. A take of this song would appear on the
Blues CD. Izabella is an early version of the song, with added piano. Personally I don't think it fits with the song, but
hey, it's easier to be a critic than an artist :) If I'm reading the book Sessions by John McDermott correctly, this was the
first time Izabella had been done in the studio. It had been written at Jimi's rented house in Shokan, NY, and even played
at Woodstock, but this is where Jimi began to assemble the studio version. Calling All Devils Children/Stepping Stone/Ezy
Ryder jam shows an August 14 date on the CD, but the book Sessions has no information about this particular date. It does
have a listing for the 17th however, perhaps this is where it was taken from. Either way, it's just a jam session, warming
up before getting down to work again. Power Of Soul comes from the November 21st/69 recordings, and according to the book
Sessions, 24 takes were attempted, but none yielding a master take. The song would appear later on the live Band Of Gypsys
album, recorded just over a month later at the Filmore East.

Quality is very good on this one, clear and loud. Just the way Jimi should be played :) If you don't have this material on
any of the other releases, you definitely won't be disappointed picking this CD up.

Mick Taylor 1992-05-20 Cambridge, MA(Vol.6)

20th May 1992: Cambridge, Massachusetts, (1st show)
Line-up: MT (gtr, voc)/Jimmie Wood (voc, harm, gtr)/Jimmy King (gtr, bvoc)/Greg Boaz (bass, bvoc)/David Salinas (dr)

01 - tuning and intro
02 - Badmouth Mama
03 - Hoodoo Thing
04 - How It Feels
05 - Shake Your Hips
06 - You Gotta Move

07 - Kind Hearted Woman Blues/Me And The Devil Blues
08 - Promised Land
09 - band introduction (and break announcement)
10 - You Don’t Miss Your Water

This recording was provided by nzb and has not been widely circulated. Unfortunately the second set was not recorded (or shared).
The sound is average, often saturated, but Mick Taylor’s guitar is very in front.
A comparison with the previous recordings shows that this recording had to be decelerated by -2,5%.
For the 5 first tracks (first side of the tape?), the right channel was more saturated and ahead of the other (hence an off-center sound). Fortunately, it was a mono recording and I was therefore able to improve it by keeping only the least altered channel and duplicating it.
The recording is also declicked now and the transitions between the tracks reworked.

Neil Young + POTR EU Summer Tour 2016

It's been around nine months now since Tom Therme, Steve Swatsworth and I put together our 6-CD tour compilation of Neil + POTR's  2015 Rebel Content tour of the US and Arthur Lancaster
put it up on Dime for us (Dime torrent #556278).

Here now is another 6-CD compilation that Tom and I worked during the three months after  Neil + POTR finished touring Europe in July. Different to the two comps put out by the Dutch Masters,
this one attempts to bring you all of the songs that Neil played on the 2016 EU tour, with individual tracks from different venues all merged together to as closely as possible sound as if
they are all from one continuous concert.

Almost every show in Europe was recorded and torrented on Dime, most in multiple recording versions. Thanks therefore go first of all to all the tapers for their efforts, without them this
compilation would simply not have been possible.

The original aim of this new comp was to cover every song sung by Neil at the 26 shows and to include tracks from each venue (though we did take a conscious decision to leave out tracks like
Volare and La Vie En Rose). But then some recordings were very much better than others so that idea was quickly abandoned in favour of recording quality. Tom collected every torrent and sifted
through them all to provide me with maybe the five or six versions of each song that he thought sounded the best. Some songs of course were only played a couple of times or so, and songs like
Tumbleweed or Love Is A Rose only once, making the choice of which one to use for a comp very easy indeed!

Choosing which songs to put where in the comp was very subjective, mostly my personal preference, but also swayed by the potential each recording had for merging the audience applause at each
end into the next track, which is in many ways the hardest part. There are 6 discs in total and we tried to make the track order pretty much follow the tour set lists, so solo stuff first,
then with POTR and all the electric stuff. The songs on the last disc are all encores.

Disc 1

1. Electric Church / Red House (7) 1:44 / 5:30
The familiar composite we've all heard, with the longer "Electric Church"
portion at the start than the :Blues release had.

2. Born Under A Bad Sign ( ) 8:17
More complete version than the official 7:36 version which has an edit at 5:10.
This version omits the 0:11 bass solo at start,
but restores the 0:38 edit at the 4:59 point, and continues 0:13 longer to the end.

3. Once I Had A Woman ( ) 8:16
Also used on the "Old Time" set, this continues to the end
while the :Blues version fades at 7:47.

4. Easy Blues (2) 4:35
Same incomplete edit as used on 9ttu, but continues a few seconds longer at the end.

5. Mannish Boy ( ) 5:51
Recall this is a composite, as most of the :Blues tracks are.
This version is somewhat more complete than the :Blues version, which runs 5:18.
This one misses the 0:05 intro, but restores two edits in official version:
0:09 at 2:50, and 0:26 at 5:02.

6. Villanova Junction (17) Jam 27:35
The longest available version of this jam.

7. Mother, Mother (2) 7:55
The mix with horn solo and some vocals removed.

* right before i left rmgd i went iso of this collection. some really kind cat, with impressive editing / music restoration skills and connections responded to my call for help, sent me these ape files, and asked to remain annonymous. i sure wish i remember who you were (although i have some vague idea still :) ) and hope you see this and get in touch privately :) so many thanks once again!!! after leaving rmgd i posted these at eztree (almost 3 years ago, Aug 10 04). well, looking at the db, there are only a few  folks who list ape files (which is why i used this show id #), whereas almost everyone else has the 1 disk collection in shn or flac. i sure wish i could supply better lineage info, but based on our conversations and the quality of this extended collection, i have no doubt this well worth the d/l and the version to have until we can get our paws on the entire 11 disc set :)

etree provides some insight into this collection, i think, and this paragraph seems to explain why there are different versions. i guess i was lucky to get the 2 disc expanded version from a fellow dead head :) and may have been the first to unleash it in bt land.

"1994 saw the release of the Alan Douglas produced "Blues" album. This was seen as one of his better efforts during his time managing Jimi's music. A cassette containing three outtakes was sent to a couple of high profile collectors shortly after. This tape contained Villanova Junction Blues, Hear My train A Comin' and Belly Button Window. For a while this tape was in very limited circulation amongst a few hard core collectors. Later the tracks saw the first light of day on the bootleg "500000 Halos"which was named after line in a poem written by Jimi post Woodstock. However there were more outtakes than those three and more has leaked out over the years (albeit in limited circulation). I am slightly dubious about the generation of this material but it is nevertheless of extremely high quality. There is a certain amount of tape hiss present here and there but that could just be from the transfer to cassette. The cassette I originally received with the three tracks exhibited slight hiss as well. The tracks on this disc are taken from a set of 11 CDRS titled the Blues Project Outtakes."

Jimi Hendrix 'Studio #5' 1968 - 1969

Howdy and welcome to the next installment of whotrader's Jimi's Forgotten Sessions, exclusively on TTD. This time I present 'Studio #5 1968 - 1969' with no other information received when I traded for this back in 1994. This one appears to be not quite as clean as #4 in terms of a nice, balanced sound, but this session has more great jamming from Jimi, especially in the second half. As always, if anyone can shed some light on these sessions, we would ALL appreciate it. Sample included and more to come.

When I started trading for bootlegs about 40 years ago now, I always loved Jimi Hendrix and Cream but quickly realized that almost all audience recordings made in the '60s are unlistenable from an enjoyment perspective. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad these recordings exist from a historical perspective, but, personally, I've never been able to really enjoy them because of the crusty quality. So, I used to avoid trading for Jimi audience shows, but if I could find some excellent quality, rare recordings from Jimi like these studio sessions, I just couldn't get enough. The down side, is that I literally have no information about these session recordings, but it's all about the music, right? ENJOY !!

"Crash Landing - Unreleased Version"
Watch Tower (WT 2004118)
Liberated bootleg - rburly

Liberated bootleg > EAC > FLAC (L8)
ripped by rburly (rdb25@hotmail.com)

Setlist:
01. Promo Crash Landing Album
02. Crash Landing (original mix)
03. Somewhere (alternate mix)
04. Anything Is Possible (basic version)
05. New Rising Sun (uncensored version)
06. Message To Love (alternate version)
07. Stone Free (original track)
08. Peace in Mississippi (complete original version)
09. Here Comes Your Lover Man (basic version)
10. M.L.K./New Rising Sun (original session)
11. Gypsy Boy (new rising sun/with vocals)
12. Captain Coconut/New Rising Sun/Cherokee Mist (official test mix done by Alan Douglas)

Liner Notes: In 1974 Alan Douglas was brought in by Warner Brothers to try to salvage some sort of product from the hundreds of remaining hours of studio material. Douglas' controversial approach to the task, wiping the original backing tracks and reformatting the songs using session musicians with Jimi's original guitar and vocals continues to provoke outcry from the diehard fans and critics alike. It has been admitted though, the album "Crash Landing" was a commercial success but the final result was not what the fans want.  Now you can hear the original tracks and mix from the material that was used for the project Crash Landing.

Personnel:
Jimi Hendrix: guitar/vocals
Buddy Miles: drums/backing vocals
Billy Cox: bass
Juma Sultan: percussion

11)Stepping Stone (Demo)            4:16
12)Send My Love to Linda            2:07 (Title incorrect. This is an edited Heaven has no Sorrow.)

A few of these songs have been seeded here on EZT in various disguises. However a complete version of Valleys of Neptune is here together with a complete Easy Blues in very good if not excellent sound quality. Drone Blues is a great snippet from a Jam that I never heard elsewhere. Untitled Guitar Improvisation (guitar & bass) is just Jimi and I think Billy playing 2 minutes and it's nothing but beautiful. This bootleg was bought in 1991 and it was my first introduction to the track "Cherokee Mist" and it blew me away. Many o nights were spend tripping in the forests with my best friends with this comin out of our little cassette player. Nowadays it has been bootlegged to death and I'm sure you can find a copy of the master tapes by now. I've reached the point where I have a couple of these bootlegs left that have songs that appear on lots of other bootlegs, regardless I will still seed them cause I'm sure there's still a few folks out there that find new stuff amongst it.

Hope you enjoy another seed from me here at EZTree and don't forget to pass it on folks.

The crowd around me was mostly respectful, although there are a few woos behind me off and on.  There were also some idiots who couldn’t figure out where there seats were and an usher sat in the empty seat beside me after Mellow My Mind and asked about 5 people to hand down their ticket stubs.  He was relatively quiet, but you can hear some faint talking.

Jimi Hendrix & Traffic A Session

Jimi Hendrix & Traffic - A Session

Tracks:
1.  Jam Thing        18:38
2.  Guitar Thing     5:15
3.  Session Thing    35:27

This is the often talked about session that Jimi recorded with the members of Traffic (Steve Winwood's band at the time).
This is an excellent quality soundboard recording from OH BOY...JOIN THE DE LUXE WAY.  As the CD arts tells you "This session was
recorded at an unknown place in the late 60's."
A purely instrumental affair, alternately dated as 1968 or 1970, this studio material is among the most intriguing
unreleased pieces of either performer. The lineup is listed as Jimi Hendrix (guitar), Steve Winwood (piano), Chris Wood
(flute), Rick Grech (bass), and Jim Capaldi (drums), but the actual lineup of these recordings is uncertain. Only Hendrix
is identifiable with certainty. The overall sound resembles Traffic, and the piano and flute parts seem particularly
recognizable as Steve and Chris, respectively.
The music on this cd consists of jams that, in contrast to Traffic's usual melodic sensibilities, range from minor key to
almost atonal structure. Some of the magic of the "Voodoo Chile" session is also evident on this recording. The jams sound
basically spontaneous, organized around particular keys with shifting tempos, and lack a distinct song structure. None of
them sound like they were even intended to have vocal parts. For the most part, the piano and drums drive the rhythms while
the guitar and flute solo. The extraordinary aspect of the recording is the complementary interplay between Jimi and Chris.
While Jimi builds upon driving vamps that eventually erupt into molten solos, Chris counterbalances with his usual delicate,
mellowing flute. The result of this collaboration is at least interesting, and sometimes magical. Unlike other Hendrix jam
sessions, Jimi seems to have a lot of respect for Traffic and doesn't fully dominate the proceedings, which makes the
session perhaps unique to both entities.
This bootleg CD consists of three jams of excellent quality studio recordings. The insert states that the session "was
recorded at an unknown place in the late 60's". Credits are Jimi Hendrix (guitar), Chris Wood (flute and saxophone), Jim
Capaldi (drums), and Steve Winwood (organ). In the book Jimi Hendrix: Electric Gypsy (1995), by Harry Shapiro and Caesar
Glebbeek, the well researched discography section lists the CD as released in late 1990, and recorded in 1968 or 1969.
