Notes;
It's 1983. M*A*S*H has just finished forever and Ronald Reagan has announced that the west would be protected from the Soviets by a Star Wars missile base in space. The Soviets meanwhile are fighting an insurrection in Afghanistan. New fangled CD players have been launched this summer in US and Europe. This means you can listen to Lionel Richie, Culture Club and Michael Jackson without the jumps, pops and clicks of vinyl. Margaret Thatcher is British prime minister again after winning a landslide election.
Finnish band Hanoi Rocks had begun 1983 by venturing out of London and their next provincial stop was Leeds. They played FForde Grene; a small, packed and absolutely sweltering music venue located in a pub in a tough part of town. The crowd was buzzing with anticipation and the now familiar classical music of "O Fortuna" served to increase the tension. Hanoi Rocks took the stage and raised us to 100% excitement over what seemed the shortest 50 minutes. When the main set ended, the crowd bayed for an encore. An encore which signalled singer and drummer to switch roles. The resulting chaos led to
Razzle losing his mike in the audience.Was it ever returned?
FForde Grene Hotel - a pub with a concert backroom which hosted bands over several decades including; Sex Pistols, U2, Whitesnake, Dire Straits, Jefferson Starship, Simple Minds, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Motorhead, Ginger Baker, Dr Feelgood, The Groundhogs, Be Bop Deluxe, Steve Gibbons, Saxon, Girlschool, The Fall, Wild Horses, Ian Gillan . Gigs stopped in 2000. In 2004 after a shooting, a police raid resulted in a haul of canabis and crack being seized & many arrests made, the pub closed forever. It caught fire one night thereafter and was eventually converted to a supermarket.
