Historical Notes:
-This was the first folk music festival at CSM
-To my knowledge, this is the only recording of the entire festival in circulation
-Festival was produced by Rodney Albin with the CSM Art Students Guild
-Rodney Albin was older brother to Peter Albin of Big Brother & Holding Company
-Emcee was Rick Melrose, Carlmont High School friend of the Albins and David Nelson
-John Jennings of Peninsula Very Little Folk Singers later formed the rock band Wildflower
-This event was preceded by another separate Hart Valley Drifters performance at an art gallery event at San Francisco State College
-Right before "The Cuckoo," Garcia mentions appearing at a festival workshop which was from 1-4pm
-Ken Frankel was a sometime member of the Hart Valley Drifters, and was listed in the program for this event, but did not attend
-Ron McKernan is listed in the program as a performer for this event, but did not attend
-There is a photo taken on this date which was signed by all members of the Hart Valley Drifters and dedicated to John Winter, dated December 18, 1962 that ended up in the Grateful Dead archives. This photo was sold at auction in April 2015 for $8500
-There is another photo print available from a slightly different moment which was used in the printed booklet for the "Jerry Garcia Before The Dead" release
-Thanks to Peter Albin for the festival program flyer, poster reprint and sharing his memories of the event
*This recording was deemed too ragged for inclusion on the “Before The Dead” release, so consider it a free gift and a companion. Please support the efforts of this release by purchasing the “Before The Dead” collection.
