Alex Chilton - 1977-03-xx CBGB’s NYC, USA (1st solo gig)
This set was labelled ‘Alex Chilton, 1st solo gig CBGB’s 1977’ - assuming this is actually true the correct date would be March 3rd but as he did a three night residency including the 4th and 5th - all of them as support to Talking Heads, the true date is uncertain; I have therefore left it deliberately vague.
Further confusion arises as an extremely similar set is in circulation labelled as being from Max’s Kansas City NYC March ’77. The only difference is the inclusion here of track 02 - Memphis Tennessee - which is absent from that recording, and track 01 which would seem to be a soundcheck. If anyone is able to pinpoint the dates and verify (or otherwise) the true location please feel free to do so and I’ll amend the info accordingly. The other, shorter, recording is definitely the same gig (between song chatter confirms this), but is clearly missing track 02 which is included here. A factor indicating that this may indeed come from Max’s is that LX tells the crowd he will be back for a second set, which would have been unlikely when supporting Talking Heads, however for the moment I am going by the information provided on the tape.
Otherwise, this makes for an assured debut and is a decent recording (the first minute is a little weak, but rapidly improves).
