SOURCE / LINEAGE
Stereo AUD master to Maxell METAL tapes
Borrowed mics > Borrowed Sony WM-D6 > Master METAL tape > Computer WAV > Cool Edit 2000 > TLH v2.4.1 > FLAC 8 > DIME > you
I don't have the specific model for the mics, but the buddy from which I borrowed the gear (thanks K!) said they cost approx. US$500.
Mics were physically separate left / right channel lines which fed back to a single stereo line into the deck.
The left / right lines were either pinned over each shoulder facing stage, or pinned to left/right sides under an open-holed baseball cap.
I originally mastered this 2003-01-07 & retained the original WAV fileset.
I did a little normalization on the computer to offset for high volume at the start.
Beyond that, I think the only thing I did was place track marks before each piece.
This FLAC fileset comes directly from those final WAVs's, which only needed SBE corrections in TLH; no CD-Rs or EACs.
NOTES
As this is an original master & isn't too bad to start with, please DON'T remaster and repost it.

Camper Van Beethoven opened up the show, and you can find my recording of that set out here on DIME too.
(I misspelled the venue name on that one, it's Theatre not Theater; as I've found the ticketstub, I'll attach it here.)

Peter Buck did a local in-store appearance earlier in the day (Record Head).
I got my Hibtone 45 signed by him that day; he pointed out to me that it was a second pressing.

Yes, the day has come to finally let this cat out of the bag. Merry Christmas!
A very fine show in my opinion:
* a nice version of The One I Love (remember this was new at this time, not played a zillion times to death)
* same for the version of Can't Get There (the second half of each verse sung up high, I always liked that), and a fierce run thru Auctioneer
* a good batch of covers thrown in (Strange / Toys In The Attic / After Hours among them)
* plus Michael does a little improv riff before Auctioneer
Fine stuff all.
Peter's guitar jumps up in volume at the beginning of Gravitys, that was from the PA and not from me messing with volume.
Cushy Tush was filler while someone's instrument was being repaired. (thx to rem live show website guy for setting me straight about the title)
King Of Birds is just a teaser verse sung by Michael.
There's some pinheads yelling gay slurs a few times.
Putting that aside, the band was ON & the rest of the crowd seemed quite into the set.
There was a beer sign on the side of the stage ("Miller Music"), implying they had some link to that night's performance.
After I Believe, Michael noted they do NOT believe in corporate sponsorship & neither they nor CVB condoned the sign.
He then ripped it down & tossed it into the crowd.
Hearing this again... don't get me wrong, I love the modern R.E.M., but man, I miss Bill Berry.

I had this in my trade list for years, but I dunno if anyone ever picked it.
Beyond that, it's only been heard by a few friends, and so this is likely its debut to most folks.
Crank it up and ENJOY! it as I have, and share it so others can hear it.

This tape turned out really, really good.
It's a bit off in the beginning as I got the levels figured out - too high at first; despite that, the beginning isn't distorted.
After that, it was smooth sailing - here & there I hear muting from people walking past my seat to get to theirs, a couple of mic bumps & that's about it.
Like the CVB set, this is a good one to crank up loud.
If you already downloaded that set, you'll know the sound here & will start this DL immediately.
If you haven't, check out the attached samples.

The first interruption is for a tape flip after Flowers; I edited the clapping on both sides of the flip together.
The split point between Disc 1 and Disc 2 introduces another breakpoint after Can't Get There, but I left a couple sec. of overlap on purpose, so nothing's really missing.
The second interruption is for a tape swap after Little America; again the clapping was edited together.
The third interruption is for another tape flip after I Can Only, & again the clapping was edited together.
Through it all, all that's missing is a bit of clapping.
Speaking of... I clap. Sorry. At least there's no talking from me or the people I was there with (you do hear someone very near me yell something at one point.)
And I leave everything in, warts and all - tuning, the band talking between songs, the claps before the encore & at the end.
When I mastered this, I broke out that clapping to separate tracks, and you could lop some of that out if you were so inclined.

Filenames have numbers on the end that are the TIMES (ex. - "...-359" is 3min59sec long).
I mark the start of tracks when the music or count-in begins, not the talking about it before it starts.
