Appearing relaxed and ready for a night of jamming with his friends, the all time guitar master started off with a solo acoustic rendition of Key to the Highway that filled the entire arena and hushed the crowd. With little fanfare, no gimmicky costumes or special effects, Clapton focuses on his incredible talent and music, which sounds better than ever and leaves everyone full of appreciation and awe. For the rest of the acoustic set, his band joined in a satisfying mix of songs from over the years. Tears in Heaven is always touching, and the jumbo screens changing to black & white for this song reveals Eric's intentions. I treasured the performance of Bell Bottom Blues, my all time favorite from way back.
Eric was pumped and hard driving, moving out to the edge of the stage for his soulful guitar solos on his colorful Fender stratocaster, playing through a number of songs without pausing in between. Keyboardist, David Sancious, donned a fourth guitar for the incredible rendition of Layla, which is nice enough unplugged, but is MADE for wailing electric guitars! Billy Preston dominated his keyboards with added flair on his many solos. His classic encore, Sunshine of Your Love, had the entire arena dancing and, the final song, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, was the perfect ending.
My husband and I attended with a couple not too familiar with Eric, along with my teenage daughter and friend. Everyone was converted to true Eric devotees by the end of the concert, as the purity and excellence of his talent sets him apart. For the second time, we sat just to the side of the stage where we can view the entire set, comments and glances between the musicians, and crowd reaction. People of all ages attend Clapton concerts, but I imagine the younger ones are either serious musicians or children of longtime fans. The only drawback to the whole night was the row of thirtysomething women directly behind us who acted more like pre-teens at a Backstreet Boys concert, standing and screeching way too much, screaming and talking through songs! Thankfully they improved after we politely asked them to take to the hallway if they just came to talk!
Performing is in Clapton's blood, and hopefully he will continue for years to come!

I would hate to be the only one with a negative take, but ... Doyle Bramhall was way, way, too loud. I talked to several people standing outside the hall waiting for EC to start because the volume was actually painful [ we were in row 23 section 3 ] Has anyone else in the country or at least Milwaukee had a similar take?
EC was absolutely fantastic. We had the pleasure of seeing him at the Albert Hall in 1993 and I never thought he could top that performance but much to my delight I was wrong.
