The Church
2023-10-17 PVBCH
Jacksonville, FL 2496

FOB recording Tascam DR-40, SP-CMC-9 Audio Technica Stereo cardiod mics > Phantom power > 24/96 > CDWave > Audacity > TLH > You

PVBCH is the Ponte Vedra Beach Concert Hall, a suburb of Jacksonville and has become my fav venue for live shows. It is intimate, always has excellent sound and a great place to see live shows and actually feel as if you have seen the performer.

This venue is an old church reconverted (irony) and I have to say this was most interesting show. I wasn't familiar with their music beyond the typical commercial tune. My wife was a fan so we bought last minute tix. At the intro I thought briefly I might shit my pants as the SBD was pushing both the volume and the bottom end to the very limit. Not sure if you realize but with enough power a sound system can make the front rows empty their shorts if pushed.
Good show, very professional and well worth the evening out! These guys are polished, had a good mix and a good light show to compliment the show.

I try and record at two levels, the DR-40 allows that, with the 2nd level lowered by 6db- makes for a great backup. My original level was set at 40% and is wasted. If this level is pushed too much for you at 6db less, sorry. Couldn't do anything about that.Mixer was in a wild mood I guess cause he had it at it's limit, trust me.

I'll post a mp3 (2) sample to demo the levels...
Audacity for fades, TLH for Flac

Help with the setlist and I will correct. I included pics for covers, something I don't use. I love this hobby and enjoy getting this out there for like kind. 2496 is easy converted using the free Audacity and after doing the heavy lift you can do the lighter part please.
Enjoy & share.

I taped this show right off the radio the night of the show. I am in the process of digitizing my collection. I have analog masters (Sony D6-generally Sony ECM-939 mic)
and DAT audio masters (Sony TCD-D3 & D7 - Yep, I wore out the first one - AT-831 mics). I always put my mics in a hat and i am 6'3" so that helps.
Also shot videos, 8MM. Not sure when I will get around to the video collection.

Over the years I taped clubs shows and arena shows mostly in the Atlanta GA area) There were some trips so I did a few other things as well.

Files from trade DVD source, SBD.

Having previously working with Billy Connolly in the Humblebums, then Joe Egan in Stealers Wheel, Gerry only toured three times as a solo artist. In 1978, 1980 and 1993.

The Glasgow concert on this tour was recorded for BBC Radio Scotland, this is from Hamburg and by all accounts is a better recording. I can find no official or unofficial live recordings of Gerry Rafferty solo. This is it.

Notes:

THE GENE POOLE COLLECTION VOL. 151

Here's the latest installment of the Gene Poole Collection, a random wellspring of recordings which have recently surfaced. To paraphrase Lou: This is gonna go on for a while, so we should get used to each other, settle back, pull up your cushions, whatever else you have with you that makes life bearable in what has already been the start of trying decade...

Some of Gene's handiwork has probably been heard by your very ears before, for the most part via the Stonecutter Archives, but this is the first major unearthing of tapes direct from the legend himself. As promising as that may seem, it's best to let the surprises hit as they are shared. The trade-off to the prolific taping on Gene's part is that the expectations for a perfect track record would be unrealistic and unfair. There will be instances of incomplete recordings, caused by late arrivals to gigs, recorder and mic malfunctions, and other assorted foibles as would befall any mortal taper. There will be times where a master from another source exists which could be superior. For the most part, Gene recorded with a variety of mics and recorders, and many shows suffered from wire dropouts, so that only one channel was extant in the capture. Due warning about the past imperfect given and out of the way, credit should be given where due as well -- for many shows thought lost forever, it's exciting to discover that many of these even in incomplete form have now cropped up.

The transfers, the audio fixes, and the research all have required some lead time -- many tapes had scant info (sometimes just the name of the artist/band, with no date listed for the performance). Needless to say, gear documentation is virtually nil -- if we wait around for that precise detail to be forthcoming, nothing from the collection would probably see the light of day.

This time we head over to the Bottom Line for two sets from Chuck Mangione.

This is listed as just the early show on Wolfgang's Vault, and Gene seems to have all of it, whereas the Vault misses the beginning of the first composition, "Hill Where the Lord Hides." What's unclear is whether there were early and late shows on this night that each contained two sets. In other words, were there a total of four sets performed this night? Gene and his friend ID each set separately, so it would appear that they cleared the house and there were separate admissions to both of the sets here, but we'll leave it to an eyewitness to confirm.

For its time, early in Gene's recording experience, this bona fide mono recording has sufficient punch and clarity. It won't be as stellar as the board tape, but solid as regards a jazz audience tape. And lossless, of course.

Of interest here is that Mangione was a big Yankees fan and shortly into the second set, he calls relief pitcher Sparky Lyle to the stage. As an AL All-Star, Sparky had just recently been the recipient of the American League Cy Young Award. 1977 was also one of the Yankees World Series Championship wins, involving the participation of Sparky.

Enjoy,
elegymart

Audience Recording

Equipment: Tascam DR-07 w/ Microphone Madness MCSM-4  Mini Cardioid microphones.
Location: Upstairs left side balcony.
I performed slight EQ with Roxio sound editor, as initial recording was a bit flat.

The Go Go's put on a fantastic show at The Ogden Theater, and really had the house rockin'. I haven't seen any other shows on DIME from their current "Girls Gone Wild" tour, but hopefully others will show up. This is the third time I have seen them (1983,2003,2011) and you can tell the band really are enjoying themselves on this tour. I also shot video of the entire show and will upload that as well at some point.I am not going to rate the quality of this, as that is a matter of everyone's own opinion (although, to me it is excellent), but I have attached samples for your review.

The Songs:

I can assure you this version has never seen mp3 or Minidisk as these things weren't invented when I got this cassette.
Compared to the "Tonight's Your Night"-boot this tape has a much darker sound (no equalizer used, I guess),
some tape hiss, but not much. When I got it I rated it quality B+, by today's standards it's more likely B (on a scale D to A+).
Anyway, now you've got your warning, feel free to download and share.

No artwork this time - sorry.

Neil Young with The Santa Monica Flyers
Manchester, UK 1973-11-03.

?>CDR>EAC(Secure no C2)>Flac(Flacfrontend, level 6)

Backed by The Santa Monica Flyers, in the fall of 1973 Neil kicked of the Tonight's The Night tour, confounding the audience
and critcs alike. Dressed like a sleazy barkeeper, he'greeted the audience withe a rousin "Welcome to Miama Beach,
ladies ande gentlemen"

As represented by his Manchester gig from November, the shows were strange, incoherent affairs, with weird stage patter filling
the gaps between songs. The songs, let us put it this way, they were un-fucking believable. The first eight songs were new
and the ninth song the audience had heard only once before, at the beginning of the set. They performed also CITS that night
But that version was to long to fit on this 69 min. boot. Also a lot of talking has been cut

notes: New Mama missing from this copy
there are edits, the show is a tad hot in spots and there is some hiss.
listen to the samples :-)
But.......this is the historic show where Neil just walks off the stage after just starting Southern Man.
You can hear Graham Nash say "what about all of these people?"

Here's what Pete Long wrote in Ghosts On The Road (pg 55) :
Towards the end of the tour Young abandoned the early acoustic set as a response to the rowdiness of the audiences.
In particular, the concert at The Oakland Coliseum became infamous.
During Southern Man a fan, making his way towards the stage, was set upon by a securityguard.
Seeing this happen Young stopped playing and amid the confusion left the stage.
Unfortunately many members of the audience did not appreciate exactly what was going on and their response was predictably hostile.
(thanks Pete)

Neil Young & The Stray Gators w. David Crosby:
Harvest/Time Fades Away Tour-Seattle Coliseum-March 17, 1973-
Master Tape-OFFENDING TRACK REMOVED

Master tape>dat>cd-r>Bias Peak Pro 5>XACT>flac

The Stray Gators:
Ben Keith-pedal steel
Tim Drummond-bass
Johnny Barbata-drums
Jack Nitzsche-piano.
(Young replaced drummer Kenny Buttrey with Johnny Barbata halfway through the Harvest/Time Fades Away 1973 Tour after Young kept complaining that Buttrey wasn't playing loud enough.)

This was a controversial tour.
To capitalize on the enormous sales of the "Harvest" album, Young's management booked Young & The Stray Gators on a lengthy three-month tour of America,
playing in large arenas (venues that Neil disparagingly called "barns"), from January 5 to March 31, 1973.
Band members, well aware that "Harvest" was raking in the money, put Young in a sour mood right off the bat by demanding $100,000 each for the tour.
Young got angry, agreed, and then said, "Are ya happy now? Is that gonna make you play better?"

On top of that, not long before the first concert, on November 18, 1972, guitarist Danny Whitten (also in Crazy Horse) overdosed on the same day that Neil kicked him out of the band.
Whitten was "too far gone" to even remember how to play the songs during tour rehearsals.
Young had hoped that being in a band and going on tour would inspire Whitten to clean up his act and rediscover his talent as a musician.
It didn't, and Whitten folded under the pressure. Young wrote "Don't Be Denied" (performed at this Seattle concert) on November 19, the day after Whitten overdosed on alcohol and Valium.

The 1973 tour itself was a wild, unpredictable ride across the country, a Jekyll and Hyde affair.
The demands, pressures, and expectations of the crowds, management, and personalities in the band got to Neil.
Neil drank lots of tequila and was often unpleasant to be around. He yelled at Kenny Buttrey.
Jack Nitzsche yelled at Neil and even took a leak on the carpet of Young's hotel room.
The vibes in the band were frequently tense. The Stray Gators were loaded much of the time on smoke, booze, and coke.
Almost deliberately sabotaging his "Harvest" success, Young often got way "out there," and you never knew which Neil you were going to get on a given night.

Two-thirds of the way through the tour, Young lost his voice. Shows were rescheduled, and to help out, Crosby and Nash were added for the two last weeks of dates.
Their presence overloaded an already "heavy scene." Crosby got coked up and acted like "royalty," making himself a pain to be around.
Loaded in Long Beach, he actually fell off the stage and injured himself. The last night of the tour, March 31 in Oakland, was the scene of a riot after a cop beat up a rowdy fan.
The band fled the stage. Not exactly the high note you'd like to end a tour on.

So should we dismiss all of the Harvest/Time Fades Away 1973 concerts and subsequent "Time Fades Away" album documenting the tour? (Neil calls the album "The worst record I ever made.")
Absolutely not. This is one of my favorite all-time Young tours (along with 1976 & 1978).
I caught the band at a rescheduled show with Crosby & Nash in Phoenix (several songs from this show are on the "Time Fades Away" album) and the concert was marvelous.
The tour setlist is a killer, with many superb songs being performed. Many of these shows have a great "edgy" feel to them.
A number of them kick ass. Amidst the wild, ragged glory and abandon the bands plays with, there's definitely brilliance and sparks flying during the tour's best concerts.

This Seattle gig is one of these. Neil is in good humor and fine form. I do not hear Nash on this show, I think only Crosby guests on this one.
This is also one of the better-quality shows, sound-wise, from the 1973 tour. I rate it VG/EX. Song samples provided.
A lot of the information here comes from Neil's excellent authorized biography, "Shakey," by Jimmy McDonough, which is a must-read (1973 tour info is on pages 384-401).
Enjoy.

JEMS master recording. This is a very good to excellent sounding recording. This recording has been available for years now but this is the first time the master reels have ever been properly digitized (April 2010). This show captures Neil Young and his backing band The Stray Gators touring in support of his Time Fades Away album. This is a good show but Neil is plagued with guitar problems and spends about a quarter of show tuning his guitar. Also of note David Crosby and Graham Nash join Neil onstage for Old Man.

Notes:
JEMS is proud to be able to partner with and present some of the choice recordings in the D & D archives. Some of these recordings have been around for years but none of the master tapes or safety copies in some cases have ever been digitized until now. Dave and Donn taped many shows in and around the Seattle area in the 70's and also were contemporaries of some of the JEMS members. Volume 22 captures Neil Young taped by Donn on a field trip down from the Pacific Northwest to California. This is an absolutely spectacular recording that has circulated for ages but most likely no copies have ever circulated from an analog source this close to the master prior.
