COMMENT

This is a different audience recording to the one that appears on the 'Civic Center, St. Paul' fan release, and it's strikingly better. The previous release suffered from overpowering tape hiss, had numerous drop-outs, was dull, flat, lifeless and below average. That, however is now a distant memory as this release suffers from none of those problems and is a superbly clear audience recording dating from 1984. Prince and the band are far, far above any background and/or audience noise, and his vocals during the piano segment in particular are strikingly loud and clear - impressively so. Normally I would have happily rated this as an EX- recording (no mean feat for a 1984 recording), however the audience during the opening few songs are a little shrill and there is some minor tape rolling during the first track in particular, but be under no illusion, outside of the stunning Persic recordings from San Francisco 1985, this is one of the best audience recordings from the Purple Rain tour, and is without doubt the best of the circulating St. Paul shows. So good in fact, it would put to shame a number of recordings from the Musicology tour 20 years later in the supposed digital age. The recording is more complete than the previous release and the only drop-out I managed to notice was 2 seconds during the intro to 'International Lover' - although a few seconds out of over 2 hours is pathetic of me to mention. The majority of the show follows the standard pattern of early Purple Rain shows with the piano segment containing the only real improvisation of the first half. The trio of 'Dirty Mind', 'I Wanna Be Your Lover' and 'Do Me, Baby', whilst not being rarities, were not staples of the show, however mention has to also go to the vocal gymnastics on 'How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore'. Disc 2 really contains the most interesting aspect of this release with the only known live performance of 'Another Lonely Christmas' circulating thus far. This one song performance is worthy of release alone, however the fact the show takes place following Christmas, and the fact it's a home town show also adds to make it a little more special. The release also includes 18 minutes from Sheila E's opening act which was uncirculating until now. The quality is slightly less impressive with a hefty bass level for 'Erotic City' in particular, however it's a welcome extra to an already impressive release. Overall I enjoy this as for two simple reasons : the fact it makes the previous release obsolete, and the one-time live performance of 'Another Lonely Christmas'. An excellent, really enjoyable release.

COMMENT

This recording runs at 150 minutes making it the longest currently circulating show to date from the Purple Rain tour. The show has been circulating since the dawn of bootlegs on various releases with African Shark's '4 The Tears In LA' and the fan release 'LA Purple Rain Tour' being the two I'm more familiar with. Both are incomplete and neither compare in terms of the recording, although it has to be said they are still both impressive for their time. This Free Boot Generation release (I'm told, and the artwork states) is sourced from the original source recording - which makes it the one to have. The recording really is superb and outside of a few minor niggles, it's as good an audience recording from this time period that one could hope for. Prince is exceptionally far and above anything else and his vocals are powerful, loud and very clear. The audience are barely audible for the majority and a few minor screams on the intro can easily be excused, as can a couple of tape flaws/incomplete parts during the 2 1/2 hours. The spoken intro to 'Raspberry Beret' is almost lost in a tape chew, the "I'm so confused" segue intro is missing, and there may be a tiny fraction of 'America' missing, but other than that this is recording leaves nothing to be critical of. Although, I do have to question the inclusion of 'America' prior to 'Purple Rain' as it doesn't seem true to the actual show, and the recording quality of 'America' is slightly heavier and bassier than the rest - again, just me questioning the running order and I may well be way off. Positives, so many positives, and they are not solely reserved for the quality of the recording as this is also a mighty fine Purple Rain concert, and one which isn't afraid to stray from the norm of the tour. It begins with the opening 'Controversy' before the show moves on as normal. 'Take Me With U' includes a portion of 'When You Were Mine' and is followed by a bizarre flamenco/latin style guitar solo, which in turn is followed by a rare performance of '4 The Tears In Your Eyes'. The piano medley continues in the same unusual vein with rare performances of 'A Case Of You', 'Raspberry Beret' (with backing from The Revolution) and 'Irresistible Bitch' which has Prince picking up the guitar to lay down a brief solo before returning to the piano to continue with the more familiar 'Temptation'. The second half of the show begins as normal, however the closing three tracks make up almost 55 minutes of the show and all are extended, very loose jams. 'Baby I'm A Star' features input from Bruce Springsteen (and apparently Madonna, although she's never mentioned by name on any of the encores) and the song is extended to over 18 minutes featuring solo's, chants and anything else one can think of. Likewise the rare performance if 'America' is stretched to the max and the pulsating jam feels like it goes on forever with very little happening in the mid-section. It lasts 15 minutes, but 5 would have been more than enough. Not to be outdone, the closing 'Purple Rain' meanders along for 9 minutes before Prince even takes to the microphone with the song clocking in at 20 minutes. I repeat - the closing 3 songs last shy of 53 minutes. The guest appearances, the highly unusual song inclusions and the very extended jams all add up to make this one of the most unique, interesting and enjoyable Purple Rain shows there is. Add to the mix one of the best audience recordings, and you have a pretty special release indeed. I still question 'America' performed prior to 'Purple Rain' on the recording as it sounds so strikingly different to everything else on here and sounds like the final song encore, but that may be down to me being too anal (insert glory hole joke here).

A bit distant but otherwise nice and clean recording, only a bit too saturated
so there's some distortion in some parts, specially when the crowd screams loud.

I have balanced a bit the channels in some places but no other editing.

Taper's notes:
"Can I remember my rig.  You bet, as I was helping my buddy sell a couple of
extra tickets and he got arrested and took me in too.  I was forced to sit
in a chair with a Sony D5 in my pants and a nach shotgun taped to my leg."

I really like this show, long and interesting setlist with 'Next to you' and
they were in a good mood.

Thanks to [the taper] for lending me the tape.

P.S.: I know the disc split has no sense for 24 bit audio but is for that 4GB
WAV filesize limit.
And note the taper mislabeled the cassettes with the wrong month.

No speed correction, no eq, no noise reduction.

Notes About the show from the taper " Diamond" David Homes:

This was the first show I ever taped, but not the first time I had seen Van Halen perform.
The first time I saw them was in either 77 or 78 in Phoenix, can't remember the exact date, but I remember that show being an excellent performance from the group, so I was extremely excited to catch them live once again and try and capture that energy on tape.
I really wasn't a hardcore fan, I was a fan of their early material, around this time I felt their egos were far too inflated, I was mostly going to tape for my friends in High School.
I remember being incredibly nervous the whole time I was taping...kind of like the feeling you get when you're about to lose your virginity.
My hand was shaking the whole time I was recording, scared about getting busted by security, it takes you a few times taping to calm yourself down and build up your confidence, but it was exhilarating.
My arm was also extremely tired from holding the deck up all night.
I forget what type of equipment I used to tape the show with, it belonged to a friend of mine who lent it out to me to use for the show, sorry I can't be more specific about the equipment.
I was positioned on the floor, can't remember if I was in front of or near the board,but I was close to them and the stage.
As for my opinion on the show itself, a major disappointment for me was watching David Lee Roth's drunken antics on stage.
He admitted to the audience that he got " fucked up" backstage when the opening band was on.
He was even drinking on stage right from a bottle of Jack Daniels, drinking seemed to make him slightly sloppy, his timing on some songs was off, he wasn't able to hit a lot of his trademark high notes at the right time so he often over compensated by doing too many screams, and I also noticed his speech was slurred.
The bands performance was quite nice though, they all kept it together, Alex had been drinking a bit, and he screwed up a few times, but didn't ham it up like Dave did.
His antics were indeed quite tiresome, the crowd really enjoyed them and the performance though, they were whipped into a real frenzy.
After the show I listened to my masters and I was quite upset with the sound quality.
I was comparing it to the quality of some of my vinyl LP bootlegs and I actually thought it's quality was quite disappointing compared to the quality of those LP's.
I shouldn't have done that to myself though, I was probably setting my standards and expectations too high, especially since it was my first tape.
Besides the sound quality, I was also upset with the recording because the tape speed had changed when I switched tapes and started recording " Eruption".
The batteries were starting to die on me, which slowed the recording down.
I was so upset with the tape that I didn't do another recording a few years after I did this one, but I did learn a lot about taping after this experience.
I've only released this recording to a few of my friends in Arizona, one of them actually did correct the tape speed problems with his 4-track, but I never got a copy of that version for myself.
This is the first time I've put this out in wide circulation, there's mention of this show at DB.Etree, but there's no setlist and all the people who say they have a copy only have it in MP3 format.
Don't know if it could be my tape that I made for one of my friends, or possibly someone else taped the as well, which really would be great because I'd like to hear what theirs sounded like, and if they caught the parts I missed.

I hope you Van Halen collectors enjoy this tape.

My own personal notes:

I've been working on this for the past few months,Dave sent me his masters quite a while ago, and I've been trying to fix them up for him ever since they first landed here in Canada.
I lost count of how many different remastering attempts I did before settling on this one I'm sharing here with everyone.
This was the hardest project I've ever worked on, it was such a difficult project to work on because I'm not a Van Halen fan at all, the only song I really liked of theirs was " Ice Cream Man", so it was hard for me to get into the music and figure things out about the group, things like how Daves voice should sound ( is the tape running at the correct speed and is he singing too fast or too slow), what do other Van Halen tapes sound like, and how they would compare to this one, all sorts of things that go along with tape collecting.

But I treated this show like a Zeppelin recording, gave it my full attention and care when trying to remaster it and correct it's tape speed issues.

I even downloaded a few Van Halen shows to compare this one to others that are already circulating out there,and to get a feel for the sound and pick up on some things about their performances through the years.

I downloaded " The Nightmare Before Halloween",a 77 soundboard,  and " Tora!, Tora!, Tora!", a 1980 audience recording.

You can do that sort of thing with Zeppelin tapes, for example, Plant's voice had changed from what it had originally sounded like in 1975, he couldn't hit the high notes as well as he used to, so I wanted to see if I could find something like that in these Van Halen tapes.

So I listened to the tapes in my stereo, then the Van Halen bootlegs I downloaded, and I thought the tapes weren't as bad as what Dave described to me, the sound quality was pretty good on it's own, there was a little too much top end on the tape, and they needed to be cleaned up a bit.
Things like guitar, Daves vocals ( especially his high notes), and the cymbals drowned out things like the bass, and back up vocals by the group, and I think was the cause of the distortion in the channels.
Too much top end also didn't really create an ambiance of the show, the noise from the crowd was almost unbearable sometimes.
Their whistling, cheering, screaming, was way too loud, and also probably caused a lot of the distortion, and of course there were the tape speed problems on " Eruption".

So the goal was to clean up the tapes, balance out the highs, correct the tape speed, and get some of the ambiance of the show.

So I hope you like the work I've done on the show, I'm no remastering genius in the leagues of Winston Remasters or anything, but I do hope you all enjoy it.

The title " How The South West Was Won" came to me after doing some research on Arizona, and it's also sort Zeppelin influenced, I asked my mate Donkyflip if it was possible to make the art sort of resemble the cover art of Zeppelin's " How The West Was Won", and he did a great job.
I had a few other ideas, things like " Running With The Sun Devil", or " Southwestern Flavour".
The " Sun Devil" reference would've been more suitable if the show took place in Tempe ( where the Sundevils play), and especially if they played in the activities center there, and the Southwestern Flavour title didn't have that much appeal.
I like to name bootlegs I'm working on with some sort of reference to the city, or state/Province that they take place in, and if that doesn't work, I usually name it after something the singer or a member of the audience says during the show.

So while I was doing some research on Phoenix, I found out that the movie " How The West Was Won" was actually filmed in Phoenix, but to not create confusion or just completely rip off the movie title, I made it " How The Southest Was Won".

So I hope you like the work I've done on the show, I'm no remastering genius in the leagues of Winston Remasters or anything, but I do hope you all enjoy it.

Please pass it on, or just pass, the choice is yours.

Cheers!

Fink's Comments (rates this release 5.0/5.0)
This rehearsal for the upcoming 1984 birthday show at First Avenue has previously been circulating on numerous releases, the most obvious being 'Neon Rendezvous' and Sabotage's 'Purple Rush Volume 1'. Sourced from an age-old tape, this particular release runs over 6 minutes longer than any other version of the rehearsal, which is obviously a major bonus.

The most obvious, more complete part of the rehearsal is 'Noon Rendezvous' which lasts 18:27 (as opposed to the aforementioned releases which fade the song out at 14:30), however there is also some transitional chatting and Prince instructing the band between songs which doesn't appear on other releases - all in all quite an interesting new version of a much-loved rehearsal. Unfortunately to my ears the quality of the soundboard recording is slightly lacking in comparison to the Sabotage release with some audible hiss throughout the opening 'Gotta Shake This Feelin', along with a few other minor niggles throughout. The recording is slightly muddy in parts, and whilst I'd still happily rate this as an EX soundboard, it's just missing the clarity which the Sabotage release has overall. Still, that doesn't detract in any way from what is one of the best releases of 2008 so far. The rehearsal itself is one of the better from the era with some phenomenal guitar-work throughout. The opening 'Gotta Shake This Feelin' features a line from 'Another Lonely Christmas', although it's shortness really can't be classed as a performance of the song, and is basically the extended First Avenue 83 instrumental performance (complete with guitar work dropped on the released recording) with a repeated phrase of "Gotta shake this feeling, baby" maxed out to 12:40. This is followed by Prince's version of Sheila E's 'Noon Rendezvous' which appears to go into '17 Days', however the recording ends abruptly. A pretty straightforward 'Free' is followed by an excellent extended 'Erotic City', this time incorporating 'All The Critics Love U In New York', however on Prince's "All The Critics" cue, the recording ends momentarily, so we only get a few bars of the song - again, I've left it off the tracklisting as only a few seconds are audible. The highlight of the rehearsal are the following 'Something In The Water' and 'When Doves Cry' - 'Something In The Water' for being an astonishing near-14 minute jam with ferocious guitar, and 'When Doves Cry' for containing some inspired screaming (check it out at 8:47 into the song).

Any time an old rehearsal is given a new lease of life is worthy of applause, however when that rehearsal is released in more it's complete form, it really is something to be very, very thankful for. Excellent rehearsal, excellent content, excellent performance and excellent quality recording. A release which should be vying for the title of "Best Of 2008".

~~~~ NOTES ~~~~
Griffin House opened. Sold out show.
Just after the opener started, my taping setup got reduced to a bare minimum.
As a result, I ended up with just my R09 running with the levels a tad on the hot side.
So, there are a couple of brief moments of distortion on Delores' vocals when she
hits sustained notes. Not really noticeable in most spots, but during Dreaming my Dreams
it's obvious.
A few moments of bad feedback as well when Delores prompted the audience to sing and
she held out her mic next to the speaker stack. This happened quite a few times :-(
Thanks to Cheech for being such a Cranberries fan, and an overall great dude!
COMMENT
Sourced from the 'Cross The Line In Toronto' release, this is a nice reworking of a sorely underrated Lovesexy release. The recording really is impressive considering it predates the digital age, and there are no serious flaws, problems or glitches which are worth picking up on outside of the recording being marginally incomplete and fading in/out a few times ('When You Were Mine' fades out and rejoins at the beginning of 'Little Red Corvette', a portion of the 'Intermission' interlude is missing, and Sheila's solo fades out after the 'Transmississippirap') however these are not that big a deal and are easily overlooked by the recordings sheer quality. The audience level for the majority of the first 90 minutes is at an absolute minimum and the crowd only really become more audible from 'Kiss' onwards. Minimum crowd noise may be a good thing, but they are painfully silent during Prince's speech in 'Anna Stesia' and it's cringeworthy hearing him plead with the audience to take his "Lovesexy" message onboard when met by a wall of silence. One last thing worth pointing out with regards to the recording itself is a slight change during 'Let's Go Crazy' where it becomes hollow, gritty and (sounds) concealed - thankfully it lasts 2 or 3 minutes max before returning to the normal excellence.....which brings me to FBG's handywork. Considering the recording was so excellent, FBG really haven't had to do anything major to this release - the tracking has (thankfully) been corrected on this release, and the recording is definitely more powerful with improved body, depth and a mean bass improvement. The only shame is the fade between 'When You Were Mine / 'Little Red Corvette' hasn't been smoothed out or corrected. Great show, spirited, passionate performance, but alas a very basic show in terms of song choices with no piano medley. As always the first half of the show is a fast-paced run-through with 'Blues In C' being the undoubted highlight stretched out to 8 minutes with some funny interaction between Prince and the crowd. Closing out Disc 1 is an excellent 'Anna Stesia' with a few spoken lines from 'God Is Alive' added to Prince's speech towards the end - all in all stretching it out to over 12 minutes long. Disc 2 is again a great performance, but pretty unsurprising with the 'Take This Beat' portion of 'I Wish U Heaven' being the only slight change from the norm. To sum up ; an excellent release of an already excellent release. Certainly the audio has been kicked up a notch and improved over the original release. There may be more interesting shows circulating in terms of set-lists, but the recording itself is up there with the best audience recordings of the entire US Lovesexy tour. The show is also circulating (slightly incomplete) on video, with Fullasoul's 'Toronto 88' being the best of the bunch.
- Thanks everybody! This is one of my anti-relion songs. (before Gotta Serve Somebody).
- This is a big hit for me back in the States. Sold about 9 million! It's all about fishing.
  (before Wiggle Wiggle).
- Oh, you know, they're digging up Presidents again. They just dug up another President now.
  So in (?) all these years you can still dig up a body. This about the first song anybody ever
  dug up a body. And I found that everything they said about the body was true.
  That's somebody, everybody. (before Barbara Allen).
- Thanks everybody. It's time for me to step on my pedal now! (before Man In The Long Black Coat).
- Thanks everybody! That's all! You clap right along! Here's a song about everything's going
  to fall apart ???? Clapton song ???? (before Everything Is Broken).
Stevie Ray Vaughan 1985-06-14 Paolo Soleri Amphitheatre Santa Fe, NM
The John Langdon Series is BACK!
A variety of uncirculated analog and digital masters, spanning three decades...
John Langdon has been taping shows for more than twenty years, a great many of them documenting the music scene in Albuquerque in the 80s and 90s.  Most of his shows are on tape cassettes, but a great many of them are on seven or ten inch reels. Over the course of time they will begin to see the light of day and be shared with music lovers everywhere. Additionally, he has further documented many of these shows with photographic images, which will be the basis for any artwork I have time to create for these shows.  Thanks to John for his generosity in sharing what he's collected.
The Willmot database has it wrong. Hopefully this will help clear up some of the setlist issues. This is an UNCIRCULATED recording from the master cassette.
Stevie Ray Vaughan: Guitar, Vocals
Tommy Shannon: Bass
Chris Layton: Drums
Source: Master / Aiwa HS-J1 Cassette recorder w/external Aiwa stereo cardioid mic > Maxell XL-II cassette tape > Denon DRM-550 cassette deck (Azimuth adjusted) > Denon DRA-635R receiver > Technics SH-GE50 Equalizer > Adobe Audition 1.5 > WAV > Edits (normalization, tapeflip matchup, fade-outs at ends) > CD-WAV > FLAC.
Tracks 1-9 fit nicely on the first disk, with 10-14 on the second one.
This must have been a really great shew, but there is some conversation during the show; maybe John had an issue with a tape and/or some mic cables? Shit happens.  Additionally, the volume levels were extremely low so I had to do some tampering wtih the digital file I captured. Please listen to the samples before you download so you won't be disappointed by any deficits in the audio quality.
This is from a 2nd generation tape. But even with that you will notice some anomalies with this recording. You will note a subtle change in sound with "Live and Let Die". It might make you wonder if an alternate source was used at this point, I assure you the source is the same throughout. This is just an artifact of the cassettes. Side A of the first cassette ends in the middle of "LALD" and side B starts back at the beginning of "LALD". So there is an overlap of 25% of the song, yet side two sounds different then side one. This happens again at "Silly Love Songs". I can't say if it the result of one of the transfers from cassette to cassette, or an effect of age on my copy. It's something you wouldn't notice when listening to the original cassette, but now that you can hear "The Long and Winding Road" flow into "LALD" you can detect the subtle change.
You will also note this one is missing "Soily". It is not known for sure if "Soily" was performed this night. Paul says 'See 'ya next time' after "Hi, Hi, Hi"
Comments
and Reviews:
Taken from Ron's Rush ROIO Review:
An exceedingly rare Signals boot.  This show is from a relative large venue for Rush.  It's too bad they never decided to be a stadium band, because this is a great gig.  Geddy seems to be in especially good voice on this night. The sound on this one is quite good.  It has many sonic characteristics of a soundboard source, but some yelling near the mic give this one away as an audience source.  This is the most complete version known to exist, only half the show, unfortunately.
daneck:
Another nice gem.  Too bad it isn't a complete show.  There is a cut during the first part of Closer to the Heart, and everything between the end of Closer to the Heart and Countdown is missing, as is Xanadu and La Villa Strangiato.
