Mastering Notes:
The first approximately 1:26 of the show was missing - that's the 55 seconds of the "Intro Music", and the first 31 seconds of "Omission".  To make this show complete I spliced in the corresponding music from the 2017-11-10 show in Baltimore.

Show Notes:
This was a hell of a "first show back". Soundcheck was hot (with more new riffs being jammed on), and the show even hotter.

I landed in Newark (out of Chicago, which was due to visiting my sweetie), and had a 500 mile drive to Rocky Mount (ok, 470), and a 2 hour stop with a dear friend from the Tesla message board days sammiched in the middle. I drove until the rain started pouring and there were dead deer on the side of the road every few miles, then decided it was time to call it a night

The venue was tiny, which inhibited the "vidcam overkill" that I specialize in, but I was still able to place a vidcam in an area to visually document the proceedings.  The staff was amazing to work with (unlike Philly...more on that later). A highly recommended venue in the "middle of nowhere" along the Blue Ridge Parkway (which was a beautiful drive).

And as for the show itself, I gotta say ANY show that has "Bitter Bitter You" in the 4-slot vs. "Omission" is definitely a treat...the Ballad > Wiser midsection was a searing showcase for Riff and Effing to do what they do best, which is take you to another place.

"Hitchcock Railway" and "Goin' Down South" were showcases as well, showing how much this band has gelled and tightened up since January.

And they could have just played the last 5 songs and "dropped the mic" and all would have been good in the world.

It's been a treat to watch these guys do their thing over these last couple months. I have filmed shows with up to 7 cameras (Baltimore), and have settled on the 5 digicams for sure, with maybe some Hi8 action in the En Why Cee...

More later...SO MUCH more

Oh yeah, thank Dennis, for both his skills and his patience with moi. It's taken me until now (at soundcheck in Fairfield, which is being filmed as well) to have the time to whip up the verbiage which I'm semi-famous for at this point.

I'ma gonna keep fucking off, as that's what I do best.

Here’s another fine master recording recorded by our friend ML and transferred on his behalf by JEMS. It’s a great audience recording of Paul Westerberg’s solo stop in Richmond, VA, August 1, 1993. Samples provided.

I am a longtime Replacements fan and saw them multiple times in the ‘80s and ‘90s, but even so, some of my favorite Westerberg performances ever came on his 1993 solo tour supporting the excellent 14 Songs. The playing was polished but spirited, the band (featuring the late Tommy Keene on guitar and Josh Freese on drums) was outstanding, and Paul’s mood was upbeat.

The show ML captured in Richmond included a few songs I didn’t see, including “Seeing’ Her,” “I WilL Dare” and the Wreckless Eric cover, “(I’d Go The) Whole Wide World.”

Highly recommended for any Westerberg fans. Thanks to mjk5510 for his help in getting this one up and out.

more claps and freekin' out girl screams towards the end. The usual setlist at this tour.

Once again, the fabulous STEVIE NICKS and her backing group...ups..sorry, the magnificient FLEETWOOD MAC. Same show as usual on this tour, as mentioned above. Some nice "local" talk
in between the songs, but nothing too special. Hope you will like this one. Thanks to the efforts of our dear norwegian viking taper warrior for conquering the scottish lands once more...SB.

David Bowie The Savage Jaw Archives Volume 1

The Savage Jaw Archives.

The official SITA project in cooperation with Ziggy In Concert and Mind-Warp PaVilion.

Towards the end of the 1990's affordable home computers, CD copiers and internet connections forever changed the way that many music collectors traded their recordings. It became so much easier to contact other collectors from around the world without having to wait weeks for replies to letters, trades to be agreed and tapes to be copied, dispatched and delivered. Contacts could be made quickly and copies could be sent out quickly too. Unfortunately, the mail was still quite slow but it was all a big improvement in the opinion of many of us.

Move the clock forward to 2004 by which time many of us had "super quick" 512kbps home "broadband" and had become familiar with BitTorrent which enabled us to get recordings sometimes in hours rather than weeks. The focus for music collectors had moved once again. We were crying out for a Torrent site which specialised in the artist whose music had brought us all together, namely David Bowie.

Goodness only knows how much work went on behind the scenes but on April 1st 2004, Savage Jaw opened it's doors, inviting everyone in to join the swarm and enjoy David Bowie "At The Atlantis". Not everybody saw this development as a good thing but the vast majority welcomed the site and the recordings with open arms. Throughout it's relatively short lifespan, Savage Jaw operated strictly to the motto "Where Quality Counts". Everything available through the site was the very best available to us. Sadly, Savage Jaw as a Bowie Torrent site closed it's doors around August 2005 but left a legacy of which those involved can be justifiably proud.

Rather than forget about this legacy a fitting tribute was put together in the form of The Savage Jaw Archives.

Comments: My first recording with the M10 after 5 years using a mini-disc recording (The Zoom H2 I initially used to replace the MiniDisc didn't make it through two shows before the line in port was fried). The result came out sounding very nice, but I had to tweak the recording more than usual to get it there. I was hoping to do a taper friendly band first, to get a feel for where the levels should be, but it didn't happen. I didn't want to start fiddling with levels as I was sitting right on the aisle. This was recorded way in the front, and during the last two songs, when the crowd stood up, the sound suffered a bit, but it still sounds very good overall.

This is the fifth time I've seen this lineup. I thought the performance was strong, maybe the best from this lineup since I saw them early on in 2008, though the tempo of some songs, most notably "Parallels" sounds slower to me than when the played it in 2008. But the band seemed tight, and the set had a lot of energy to it. I would have liked to see the setlist shaken up some more, though. I witnessed this lineup perform all of the songs already.

I only ask that you please take any negative comments about Jon not being in the band elsewhere, and let those who want to listen this enjoy it. Thanks!

COMMENT

I've listed this as an aftershow from the Gold / Ultimate Live Experience tour, and it states on the accompanying artwork (and the title) that this is an aftershow from the tour but it's slightly misleading to say so. This is a one-off mini concert held in Belgium on a day off from the tour, so to class it as an aftershow is slightly incorrect. This is an excellent recording, and whilst the crowd are audible throughout they do not spoil the enjoyment of the show. Audience members can be clearly heard singing along and participating, but it adds a certain amount of atmosphere to the show and is in no way detrimental. The show itself is slightly different from many aftershows of 95, and is a nice mix of material performed from the main March 1995 tour as well as some aftershow favourites. 'Sing A Simple Song' is slightly more mellow than many other versions, 'The Most Beautiful Girl In The World' is performed as an instrumental with the crowd taking over vocals for the chorus and 'Loose' is very extended to incorporate various solo's from band members. 'Get Wild' is slightly disappointing in comparison to many other versions from the tour and is missing many of the samples which make it so enjoyable, however the closing 'Gold' more than makes up for it. Overall, whilst this show certainly lacks the passion, grit and all-out-funk of some other 1995 one-off shows, it is funky and the recording is of very high quality.

Tech Notes
FLACs were decoded to wave and WaveMerge was used to reassemble
the tracks back to 1 long wave.  CEP2.0 was used to align &
sync all 3 sources.  Soundforge 8.0 was used to remove a line
buzz that ran throughout the SBD source. Wave L3 Ultramaximazer
used to perform compression.  CEP2.0 was used to create all
multichannel mixdown matrix mixes (phew).  CEP2.0 used to adjust
the volume for the center, LFE and surround channels.  Surcode
CD Pro DTS was used to encode to DTS.

Notes

Remaster done largely to utilize Waves L3 which I did not have
at my disposal back in 2005.  The drums ran extremely hot on the
SBD recording.  Wave L3 was able to best contain the drum while
increasing the volume on the rest of the mix.

I also was able to utilize MLP encoding for the six channels of
24/96 high resolution audio for use with the DVD-Audio version.
I also did not have at my disposal back in 2005.

Disc 1 and disc 2 can be assembled seamlessly on longer media.

There was an audible line buzz running throughout the SBD
recording.  This was likely not going over the PA as the buzz
is not apparent on either of the AUD sources.  The SBD DAT
recording continued to run after the feed from the SBD had
ended and the buzz continued.  This leads me to concluded it
was a line feed problem.  Bad cable possibly?  Because the
recording continued after the music ended a perfect recording
of the buzz was recorded.  This allowed me to accurately
capture and then remove the noise throughout the recording
very accurately without disturbing the fidelity of the
recording.  This was done with Soundforge 8.0 using the
highest quality setting.

The 2 AUD tapes made that night were from similar locations
as you can hear the same 'cat calls', claps, etc. on both
recordings.  However the 2 recordings still blended well
together and had different and unique sounds.

This 5.1 mix utilizes 5 fully discrete channels.

---------------------------------------------------------

Additional Formats

This show is available in the following formats:

1. The straight SBD, AUD1 and AUD2 recordings.
2. SBD + AUD1 + AUD2 Matrix Mix at 16/44 CD-Audio
3. SBD + AUD1 + AUD2 Matrix Mix at 24/96 DVD-Audio
4. SBD + AUD1 + AUD2 DTS-Audio-CD 5.1 Surround Sound
5. SBD + AUD1 + AUD2 MLP 24/96 DVD-Audio 5.1 Surround Sound

---------------------------------------------------------

More On DTS

Today's audio standards are moving towards multi-channel
sound, like DTS and Dolby Digital.  While the Audio-CD
standard (Red Book) hasn't changed to accommodate these
new sound formats, it is still possible to go around the
specification and to put a 5.1 surround recording on a
regular Audio-CD.  To play a DTS-Audio-CD you must connect
your DVD/CD player via a digital cable (optical or coaxial)
to your DTS Dolby-Digital receiver. It is not 100% sure that
your receiver will recognize a DTS-Audio-CD, so the first
time you're trying to playback a DTS-Audio-CD you must do
a test to determine if it can. Begin with the volume very
low, start the disc and rise the volume gradually. NEVER
listen to a DTS-Audio-CD through the analogue audio outputs
of your CD/DVD player.

Burning Instructions
Burn them the absolute same way as you would burn any normal
Audio-CD from FLAC files.
