Notes:
JEMS is proud to be able to partner with and present some of the choice recordings in the D & D archives. Some of these recordings have been around for years but none of the master tapes or safety copies in some cases have ever been digitized until now. Dave and Donn taped many shows in and around the Seattle area in the 70's and also were contemporaries of some of the JEMS members. Volume 22 captures Neil Young taped by Donn on a field trip down from the Pacific Northwest to California. This is an absolutely spectacular recording that has circulated for ages but most likely no copies have ever circulated from an analog source this close to the master prior.

I got this recently. I don't know the generation - sounds like 2nd or
3rd. It's got a little hiss,  however it's a pretty good recording.
The sound is full and detailed. This isn't one of the normal 1973
shows that floats around, so hopefully this fills a gap in some
collections. I'd love to find the master on this one. Anyone?

note from the taper:

This IS the "We Gonna Get You" master tape!  As Joe Ray recalls it;
"After Neil's comment to get me ('the guy with the microphone'), I held the
microphone where it could not be seen until 'The Loner' (uncomplete), when
I turned the deck off. I was sitting in the 5th row center and the roadies
were looking for me from the side of the stage.  The pressure was on me,...
if I would have been caught I would have been arrested, etc.,... so, I just
stopped taping. I put the expensive AKG D-1000-E microphone in my boot.
I lost the $40.00 Sony Portable Cassette Deck and the Microphone Cord by
saved the microphone and the tape.  I became much more stealthy when
recording shows after this incident!"

 Share freely, losslessly and gaplessly.
taper's notes:
(from barndoggs master tape, uncirculated for 30+ years.)
there are a few problems with this tape.
I was sitting in a front aisle seat, and you can hear
alot of talking in the 1st song. the people next to me
were real pissed because people were standing in the aisle
and wouldn't sit down. security soon remedied that.
From don't be denied on there are some speed problems in
the recording, I think due to a faulty tape, since the
batteries were new.
remasterer's notes:
most of this recording sounds pretty consistent, but it
goes south (further south than in "southern man") starting with
don't be denied. the last two songs don't sound too bad, but
tracks 14 and 15 have some variation, and the worst of it is
in southern man.
the folks in Lynyrd Skynyrd might be glad about that.
they didn't like that one much.
the last two songs may be a little slow, but this could use
a speed fix. I was thinking about giving it a try, then decided
why mess it up for everybody else even more than it already is?
this is basically the "raw files" posting of this show.
It's not as bad as I feared it might be, and most of it sounds okay.
none of it sounds wonderful. this is a 1973 Neil Young audience
recording at the Boston Garden, recorded on a primitive portable
Sonic Panic? recorder and microphone. so don't expect it to sound
like it was recorded on a Nakamichi recorder. But it is pretty good
for what it is, and it is from a master cassette > CD source.
so there is no tape copy lineage of any kind here, no noise reduction,
EQ or shoddy (or otherwise) attempt to fix the speed problem.
this appears to be the whole concert.
thanks very much to "barndoggs" for recording this Neil show
and sharing it with me to share with all of you.
This one is even older than Neil's jeans worn on current tours.
so some of it is mellow, some of it rocks, and all of it's good old Neil.
almost good enough to put this in with "classic" rock.
there is another less complete source of this show circulating,
but this is likely the first circulation of this recording.

This show has been bootlegged on two LPs, the first half (songs 1 to 9)
is from the bootleg LP called "Coming Home", the second half (songs 10
to 17) is from the bootleg LP called "A Bit More". This set is recorded
from those two bootlegs. The second bootleg was pressed on very bad
vinyl, and that's noticable in this recording (especially during Alabama
and New Mama).

Are You Ready For Country

I've been downloading the '73 feast of shows to compare to my sources if I didn't already have that particular version.
To my ears the '73 Toronto show shared here in 2006 and brought alive again during this flood is way over processed
and sounds like a straight noise reduction tool was used to take out the hiss causing that noise reduction "swish".
This did take out the hiss but also took out the high end,
It sounds boosted and closer which noise reduction will do but also sounds all mid range to me.

So whatever your preference is I decided to share this unprocessed version I transferred years ago without any noise reduction.
I might have used a touch of eq'ing on it but I just don't remember, unfortunately I didn't keep as good of transfer notes as tape trading notes before I got serious about the transfers.

The source I used for this transfer was very good with little hiss to begin with, my personal taste is I prefer this version as it has the high end restored and is a straight document of what the taper captured that night.

The one issue with this one is it is missing Neil announcing Time Fades Away but no music is missing.

I don't know the generation and kept detailed trade notes back in the day but there is no generation noted on this one.

This is a DAT clone reiceved in the 90's, and 1st time transfered.
I noted that some versions of this show was shared in different way :
1) from the bootleg CD Lonely Week-end (incomplete) 76 minutes
2) a complete version (Generation unknown CDR version) but using lots of filter to avoid the noises at the point that sound seems go out from a tube (About 91 minute)
3) a complete version with some cuts during the talks (Generation unknown - taken from analog tapes) - unprocessed (with all the noises) - but inferior quality at my ears.

My version come from a DAT clone of the analog master but with diginoises in "On the WAy Home" & "Time fades Away" + last song "Are you ready for the Country" was missing.

So I replaced and patched those songs with the tracks taken from the Bootleg CD "Lonely Week-end", and added the last song "Are you Ready For the Country"
from the filtered version and applyed a bit of equalization to sound similar at the all tracks of my transfer.

At the end Here to you the best in terms of sound quality and the more complete version of the Maple Leaf Gardens '73 show

Hope you enjoy

Unknown generation of an audience recording.
Very decent sounding source with very little crowd noise.
Slight noticeable microphone noises. Slight tape hiss.
I have changed the track starting points to the beginning of the songs.
As a footnote:
Sugar Mountain website lists "Cowgirl In the Sand" as being the 6th song played.
I believe this may be in error as I can tell of no interuption between the two existing tracks.
And the tour setlists before and after this date do seem to coincide with this setlist.

Bonus Track: 01 Dance Dance Dance w/Taper Comments

Known Faults:
None

In the early 1980’s a long time trading partner sent me a CDR copy of Neil’s Buffalo ’73 show from raw transfer directly from his first generation tapes as two un-mastered and un-edited tracks. I’ve listened to this show more times than I could possibly recall over the years and it has always been in the back of my mind to give it the deluxe treatment for release.

There is a very good second generation copy currently in general circulation. So, my challenge became how do I take an already very good capture of one of my favorite shows and take it to another level from this 1st generation copy.

Through modern technology and guidance from my partner at JEMS I am now able to seamlessly remove most offending noises without damaging the underlying music.

Using this technology, I have taken out close to 100 offending noises including whistles, coughs, mic bumps, close up audience chatter & laughter, chair creaks and noises that have no known origin. This is not a treatment I would give to very many shows or would recommend doing as it is a very manual process and losing ones mind is a distinct possibility but for this show, I think every second is worth it. It is not possible to take out every offending noise, if the offending frequency is too intertwined with the music to be extracted without damaging the music then it was not processed. The majority of the extractions occur during the acoustic portion of the show. It's a painstaking task and I hope you all agree it was worth the effort.

In addition, the usual mastering details that go into all my shares have been employed ensuring the best possible release from this 1st generation source.

Compared to the circulating version, this share includes more audience at the beginning with some up close taper comments as he gets set up and some extra Neil dialogue not found on the other releases. A simple jump cut to remove the taper comments did not work as Neil’s dialogue runs up against the taper’s to create a seamless edit. I was able to remove the taper dialogue at the start using the technology mentioned above targeted at only his voices frequency. For the purists out there I have included, as a bonus track, the first track with the tapers comments intact.

This is hands down one of my favorite Neil shows of all-time and one of the better captures of the first leg on the 1973 tour. I'm hopeful with this new deluxe treated addition you feel the same and enjoy it as much as I have over the decades.

Big thanks to BK from JEMS for the guidance and tutorials.

Here is the master tape of the Chicago gig from early in Neil Young's "Harvest/Time Fades Away" American Tour of 1973.
This three-month odyssey started on January 5, 1973 in Milwaukee. The setlist here is noticeably different than the recently posted Seattle March 17, 1973 show and features a number of songs that were dropped later in the tour. As such, this Chicago concert provides a nice contrast to Seattle. "LA" is performed here on acoustic guitar, rather than the electric version featured in the Seattle show. In addition, Kenny Buttrey also adds a distinctive difference on the drum parts. I rate this show VG+ in sound quality. Like Seattle, I think it's another of the better-sounding shows from this tour. None of these Chicago tracks appear on the "Time Fades Away" album. Song samples provided. Enjoy.

Contrast Clause: Another fine recording (and complete) of this concert has been made available before on DIME.
and still is to be found at http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=129673

Because of historical significance and also because it's a fine recording we're uploading this on DIME.
This master suffers from the lack of "Borrowed Tune" and the encore sounds muffled.
During the encore some policemen came and stood in front of the taper and avoiding capture BR had to
put the micophone in his pocket........

So, we're very pleased again to upload another installment of the BR Archives.
A combined production by BR, Reel Records and Agovigli.
Please note that this upload contains the following four folders:

A. Direct Transfer of the BR Analog Master (no editing whatsoever)
B. Fully edited version of the BR Master by Reel Records
C. Four tracks containing two tracks from different master to make a "edited concert-version" from two masters containing
"Borrowed Tune" and a clearer "Are You Ready For The Country"
A text-file with instructions is included of how to compose the "edited concert-version".
The original text-file from the upload of the master from which BT and AYRFTC were take is also included!
Thanks to the unknown (to me) taper of that other fine version.

This recording, which surfaced a couple of years back, is one of the
better 1973 Time Fades Away recordings.  Besides sounding nice, you get
the unreleased Come Along And Say You Will (some people have called it
Lonely Weekend) along with a very rare Borrowed Tune, and the
surprisingly infrequently played Harvest and Out On The Weekend.

My version was slow, so I sped it up to bring it into key. My version
had lots of little clicks, so after tiring of removing them manually I used
a click removal tool to remove the remainder. To my ear, I hear no
negative effects from the process.

Review from the Old Grey Cat: http://www.geocities.com/%7Eoldgreycat/csny/neillondon.htm

It says something about his confidence in himself that at this February 27th, 1971 solo
concert Neil included 11 new songs among a 20-song set. Or is that 21-song set? According
to Johnny Rogan's book The Visual Documentary, "Flying on the Ground Is Wrong" was also
performed that night but, alas, it's not included here.

What is here, however, is pure genius. Presenting himself in the singer-songwriter mode then
in vogue, Neil shapes a delicate and incisive set for an appreciative--and quiet--audience.
Compare this set to, say, later solo Neil, and what comes across most is the slow dissolve of
innocence and the dwelling on the down and dour; but, of course, that "dissolve" is the
domain (primarily) of the young, and here it's captured by one of the best equipped
chroniclers of such stuff in the arts today. It doesn't matter, really, how rich or poor you
are, whether you're a rock star or a kid just out for a good time--eventually, life catches
up to you.

Typical for a Neil show, highlights abound: "Journey Through the Past" and a drop-dead,
beautiful "Love in Mind" are two such moments. Quite a few songs that eventually surfaced on
Harvest are also presented minus that album's MOR-ish sheen. Shorn of embellishments,
"Old Man," "Out on the Weekend," "Heart of Gold," "A Man Needs a Maid," "Harvest" and
"The Needle & the Damage Done" come across as what they, in truth, are: songs from a young
man's soul.

The sound quality is stellar throughout, with a minimum of hiss and audience noise. Even the
most novice fan would/should enjoy it. (A)

I love this performance, early 70s solo Neil at his peak. One of his best concerts and a fabulous audience recording !
I've traded this show in various formats throughout the years and was NEVER satisfied with it.
Usually, the pitch was way off, I've seen and heard versions both too slow and too fast.
The last one I got was grabbed from another tracker, excellent pitch work but, alas, some of the
hilarious between-tune banter was cut from the original BootCD source used for that torrent.
Aditionally, the sound [in my opinion] was not quite as excellent as one would have hoped for.
So I went back to my old DAT I've received about 10 years ago, described by my usually well informed trading-partner
as coming from a 3rd generation cassette. I've had already started to work on this a couple of years ago but now I've
finished it in a long, exhausting session, painstakingly removing about 50 tiny spots of static, some of which are on the other
versions as well, some are unique to this transfer. I just hope I've found them all ...
% indicates a break in recording, likely on the master.
I left most of the microphone bumps etc. untouched, just cut out one or two that were really disturbing and could be removed
without interfering with the musical content. The original DAT ran a bit too fast so I had to re-pitch it completely, with results
very similar as that recent torrent. Otherwise, I did not harm the sound of this fantastic audience recording in any way.
Naturally, there is some tape hiss but I've heard much worse. Here's hoping that one of these days, we'll get this straight from the master.
No re-mastering, eq'ing etc. was 'performed' and if you wish to do so, do it for your own pleasure in your hobby room...

_____________

This two-record vinyl boot must have sold a million copies, because it seems that just about everyone used to have one. The sound quality is really nice considering the audience recording technology of 1971. Neil is quite talkative, and his "comedy" on "Sugar Mountain" is hilarious. I consider this show essential to a live Neil Young collection.
This is from mint-condition records; I was told they'd been played only six times. Still, you'll notice the vinyl noise -- boots in that era were not exactly high-quality pressings. Still, it's pretty minor, I think. No effort has been made to "clean it up" -- this is how it would have sounded if you were bringing one home from a head shop in 1971. This recording has never emerged among collectors from a non-vinyl source.
CD case artwork is included; it's made from the original album jacket, including some incorrect titles because many songs were unreleased at the time. I still can't figure how they got "It's So Hard to Wait" for "On the Way Home."

Enjoy!
