On May 20th, the world lost a true pioneer in the field of concert research with the passing of Pete Long. Pete wrote the definitive book on Neil Young's touring history "Ghosts On The Road". I only got to know Pete over the last few years and he was a very private person so his passing came as a real shock. One thing I do know is he would not want us to grieve for long and would say on with the show...this share is dedicated to his memory and life's work documenting the tour histories of Neil Young, Kate & Anna McGarrigle and Jackson Browne...until we meet again.
I could not think of a better tribute to Pete than the surfacing and sharing of a previously unheard show from Neil's 1971 solo tour.
An incomplete recording of the January 16th late show has circulated for a long time, after 50 years we finally get to hear the early show in it's entirety. This one came my way a number of years ago due to a random conversation with a former co-worker.
He has chosen to remain anonymous but I can share he was 16 years old at the time and taped the show on a handheld Panasonic cassette deck with an external microphone he had received for Christmas a few weeks before. Luckily for us the early show was the show he attended only because his parents would not let him ride the train late at night to attend the late show.
The capture is on the rough side, after all it is a 16 year old teenager taping for the fist time on less than stellar equipment and yes I removed a LOT of mic bumps but I am so very thankful he was there.
It was the only show he ever taped and he kept the tape safe for some 40+ years before it landed in my deck for transfer.
This show features the true live debut of "Love In Mind" as Neil mentions writing it that morning.
Thanks to the taper originally capturing this missing show as well as keeping the tape safe for all these decades. Thanks as well to goody for always being available to give these important musical documents his certified seal of pitch correction/approval.
Please keep Pete in your thoughts as you listen to this rare previously unheard show.
