Yes 1977-10-24 - Best Of Wembley 1977 - London

TheTooleMan Presents:

YES

The Best of Wembley 1977

Original stereo cassettes recorded by Mick Dillingham and Steve Darton
Tapes provided by Mick Dillingham
Mastered by TheTooleMan August 2005, Art by Jamie Lockhead

Mick and Steve recorded several of Yes week-long stand at Wembley in 1977. I've selected some of the most powerful and clearly-recorded performances of each song of the nightly set.

Our intrepid recordists captured the entire concerts of October 26 through 29, and Starship Trooper and Roundabout from the October 24 show. The two tracks from the 24th were previously torrented along with a Rick Wakeman recording from January 18, 1974. They have been mixed a little differently for this collection.

No other tapes of some of these dates have surfaced, and others were incomplete and of lesser audio quality.

Yes 1977-10-09 - Morris F X Jeff Municipal Auditorium - New Orleans

Whoops! Forgot I had this Crappy Master. This should be my last in the series. A little bit of a sad story goes with this show. My wife and I made the 3 hour trip to New Orleans without tickets to the show, but I was confident I would find a scalper and I was willing to pay a fair sum for a pair. The doors to the auditorium were not open yet and there were a gazillion people milling around outside. Eventually I found a pair of tickets and paid double the face value ($30 for the pair; hey, it was 1977). Soon the doors opened to the place and everyone pushed and shoved their way to get in and my pregnant wife was nearly crushed in the crowd. People were screaming at each other and glass doors were broken as well. It was festival seating (for those that don't know what that was, it meant every man for himself to get a good seat). Anyway to make a long story short, 2 days later my wife miscarried and to this day blames the commotion at the show. The good news is we had 4 kids after that, all healthy.

Besides being recorded with crappy equipment, the crowd noise is pretty bad. The first CD opens with a scream from the drunk sitting behind us. He proceeds to scream for no apparent reason all during the show until at one pont he loses his voice. Its sort of humorous and you'll get to hear it. He tries hard, but nothing comes out.

Yes 1977-10-07 - Mid-South Coliseum - Memphis (Relayerman)

Here is a different recording of the Yes Memphis '77 show with my original info file from 2007.

-------------
To, again, celebrate the 30th anniversary of Yes's Going For The One album / tour, here is a show from the master tapes. This was recorded by a friend of mine, Tommy P., who supplied the trading, via myself, of many Memphis Yes shows. This show has been 'remastered' by me (twice actually) and I think I got it the way it should be this time. IMHO this is one of the better sounding shows of this tour and is marred by the fact that Yes only played Roundabout as an encore. There was no Starship Trooper. Maybe Tommy can shed some light on this as to why that was. The recording itself is quite good, but as with most recordings of the 70's there are some bad bits. I've tried to fix some bad spots and there are some very minor tape drags here and there. Overall, this is one of my favorites. I beleive the Tooleman will be reseeding my New Orleans show in a day or so to wrap up the US portion of the tour.

Mike Millard Master Tape
Master tape>dat>dat>cd-r>Bias Peak Pro 5.2.1>XACT>flac

This one is for Relayerman. On several occasions before he passed away, Mike Millard let a close friend come to his residence and transfer a number of his masters to dat while they were hanging out. This show is one of those master>dat transfers. This is Mike's mint, raw master.  It has not been equalized or remastered. Since I do not have any boots of this show, I cannot comment on how it compares to them. To me the sound quality is excellent, but as always, song samples are provided so that you can decide for yourself. As many of you already know, Millard's recordings are known for their quality. Hope you enjoy this gem.

Remaster by TheTooleMan April, 2007 from DAT transfer of Mike Millard's original recording,
as seeded by Mesquite at:

http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=143340

Lineage: Master tape>dat>dat>cd-r>Bias Peak Pro 5.2.1>XACT>flac > Mesquite's torrent > Sound Forge 7 > FLAC

This is NOT the same remaster as the one found in the "7 From 77" set I produced a few years ago. The original source of that recording was not the DAT copy, either. This version is superior.

Having a great source like the one seeded by Mesquite is a lot of fun to work with. But I found a few small problems which detract from the excellence of the recording. These are fixed in this version:

- several tiny gaps throughout the recording, each lasting only a few milliseconds
- low-frequency "thumps" in some quiet passages during "Awaken"
- volume level adjustments at the beginning of the recording, during "Firebird Suite" and "Parallels"
- cuts in applause between tracks

The levels of the extreme high and low ends of the frequency spectrum were increased, to give the recording more impact. The dynamic range of the audio was adjusted to bring out the music above the crowd noise. Several tracks were separated to mark the start and end of individual songs which were combined in one track in the master recording.

No music or crowd noise was cut from the original recording, other than a second or two of applause and ambient sound in the arena between tracks, which was either faded in or out or cross-faded with other noise to smooth out a cut in the source. Most of the applause before the encore was not recorded.

With these small edits and enhancements, listeners can even better appreciate the quality of Millard's recording and the performance by Yes!

The Nightbird Alison Steele, late-night disc jockey and major Yes fan, interviewing members of Yes for her syndicated "Nightbird and Company" radio show. "Nightbird and Company" was a program distributed to radio stations around the world on vinyl LP's (this was the 70's, after all). Brought to you by the National Guard and the Army Reserve.

Back in 2002, Mike Healy pulled together a bunch of material which I cleaned up and assembled.

Each Nightbird program was numbered. The exact air date and number of the Steve Howe program has been lost, but it was probably in the 200 series.

These programs are in this set. Some of the commercials distributed with the program are included, too.

1.01-1.09 #169 (July 28, 1974) Rick Wakeman (9.24)
1.10-1.15 #2?? (February, 1976) Steve Howe (9.53)
1.16-1.24 #271 (July 11, 1976) Chris Squire (10.56)
1.25-1.29 #280 (September 12, 1976) Alan White (9.28)
1.30-1.37 #284 (October 10, 1976) Jon Anderson (12.05)
1.38-1.46 #317 (May 29, 1977) Rick Wakeman (11.21)
1.47-1.50 #333 (September 18, 1977) Steve & Rick Part 1 (7.30)
1.51-1.55 #334 (September 25, 1977) Steve & Rick Part 2 (8.24)

An important footnote: Alison Steele died on September 27, 1995, of stomach cancer. In an article published at http://www.grubstreet.ca/articles/bio/alisonsteele.htm, author JF Hafer states,

"Afraid of losing her medical insurance and job, which paid the bills, Steele didn’t speak publicly about her illness. Using the guise of vacations, she had surgery and chemotherapy. She knew management wouldn’t understand. She’d lose her job. She’d lose her medical insurance, if she lost her job. She had to pay the bills."

The entertainment business can be brutal. But sadly, in the 13 years since the Nightbird passed away, little has changed about the state of health insurance in the United States. Today, loss of employment can still mean loss of health insurance. The number one reason for personal bankruptcy in the United States today is debt due to expensive medical bills which cannot be repaid. With the impending election, candidates are making a lot of promises about changing the status quo, but can they be trusted to act on their promises? And will their plans help not just the employed, but the unemployed, too? Tax deductions on medical insurance are no help if you're too poor to pay taxes.
