David Bowie
Radio City Music Hall, New York, USA
October - 30 - 1974
Tape received from NICMAC in the Hunky Geordie Tape collection donated by Steve23yh
Digital transfer (notes from Steve23yh): TDK D60 x 2 > Transfer (100PCB): Nakamichi CR7 > Benchmark ADC1 > Marantz digital recorder to SD card > FLAC 44,1/16
Remaster processing:
flac files -> Magix Audio & Music Lab -> (remaster/edit) -> FLAC (44,1 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo)
Some EQ was applied mostly mid frequencies were lowered bass lifted, treble lifted a bit. The sound of the original recording was also changing during the show and I tried to balance this over the whole length but still the Mike Garson part is a bit superior to the rest. Some hiss present but I decided to leave it in order to achieve a balanced sound. Sound level adjusted. There were several gaps which I tried to eliminate as good as possible. To make the gap in the middle of Can You Hear Me seamless a few seconds were removed. The same was made with the gap in the middle of R'n'R Suicide.
Jean Genie is cut after only 1:13 min. Here a fade is applied and the following song Diamaond Dogs is faded in. There is also a small cut between this and the next song Moonage Daydream.
As the original was running too slow the speed was increased according to Steveyh 23 (HG tapes) with a factor of 1,04 to 1,06. The pitch was adjusted accordingly.
This is the only "Philly Dogs Tour" show with the complete opening act by the Mike Garson Band. And what a nice one it is. The only flaw maybe is that the audience is not very happy with the opener and is constantly booing and calling for Bowie. Also David has a flu ("When I come to New York I get a flu, well I got it again..."). But this is not an obstacle for him not to present a top show. At this concert Foot Stompin' was played the first time.
I had this recording in my own collection since the early 80's so I am very familiar with the show. But my version was inferior to the one here and had more cuts. So I was very happy to get this and try my best to improve the sound.
The photos in the cover art are taken from the RCMH shows but I'm not sure if they are from 30th Oct..
There's a nice article from Musical Express I found in the web which gives some insights in the RCMH concerts: https://geirmykl.wordpress.com/2015/03/30/article-about-david-bowie-from-new-musical-express-november-16-1974/
The poster which I put on the back cover clearly states that the concerts took place on 30. + 31. 10 + 01. - 3.11. and here are the notes from the Young American website
"An audio recording exists of this show which is commonly thought to be from 28 October 1974. However, David did not play New York on that date and in his book "People Stared At The Make-up On His Face", Per Nilsen suggests that the correct date is 30 October."
