We were looking for a way to raise money for our kids’ school on the Big Island when our Friend Ethan told us about his connection with Warren and Gov’t Mule. We learned that the band was headed for a tour in Japan, and figured we could entice the boys to come over when they returned through Honolulu.  A bit of negotiating, and we’d arranged a trade: We’d host the band for a week vacation on island, and they’d play a benefit show at our friend Mattson’s Kona Brewing.

We met them at the Kailua Kona airport, loaded the gear up, and brought them to their hotel. For the week, we had a chef friend make lunch and dinner each day, served at our house up the hill from the hotel. We toured them around, and had an amazing, fun time. Standout memory for me is Woody floating in our pool with Sage, our 7 year old son. The two were joined at the hip for the week.

On Friday, the stage went up in the parking lot of the brew pub. We had a great turnout and the crowd poured energy into the show. Woody was amazing; one of my favorite performances. School founder Connie’s husband Jesse Young played 3 songs with the band, along with Kenny Loggins’ son Crosby.
