JOE'S MEMORIES:
Eric Clapton had been out of the spotlight for a while, doing a stint in rehab and overcoming the "demons"
that had taken hold during the Cream and Derek and the Dominos years. With that behind him and the new album,
"461 Ocean Boulevard", ready for release later in the month, Eric and his band were finally doing a long-awaited tour.
I never had a chance to see Cream, or Derek and the Dominos, and after seeing the spray-painted slogan, "Clapton is God",
in magazine photos over the past few years, we were looking forward to seeing a great show. Unfortunately,
it turned out to be an "uneven" performance and it seemed that beating those "habits" had made Eric more mellow than we had expected.
There was no introduction of the band. The lights dimmed and they just walked out onto the stage and there was Eric,
the guitar God, dressed in jeans and a yellow t-shirt, with the Kool Cigarettes logo on the front. Naturally,
we were expecting things to start off with a loud, crunching, classic Clapton/Cream/Derek song, but instead,
we got two acoustic songs. The first was "Smile", a song written back in the 1920s, by silent film star Charlie Chaplin
and that was followed by "Let It Flow", a song from the new album. Finally, Eric strapped on the Stratocaster and they did the Blind Faith classic,
"Can't Find My Way Home". The beginning of the song was done slower than the original, but picked up for the second half jam,
giving Eric a chance to do his first great improvisational leads of the set. Things were looking up and they continued with a nice medley
of two more songs from the new album. The first part had them doing the legendary Johnny Otis's "Willie and the Hand Jive",
that went into the Eric Clapton/Yvonne Elliman composition, "Get Ready". It was a nice combination of songs, but they could have made
"Willie.../ Get Ready" into an all-out, high energy jam, instead of keeping it as "mellow" as they did. "Layla" came next,
which was kind of a surprise, since everyone must have assumed that that would have been saved for the encore.
It was a good version, although it was a couple of minutes shorter than the Derek and the Dominos album track that we were all familiar with.
And it was ELECTRIC, not the bland acoustic version that we would have to endure in later years. The pace slowed again,
with another Blind Faith radio staple, "Presence Of The Lord", although there were more great lead moments.
The second half of the set turned out to be the best part of the show, with "Steady Rollin' Man", the new single "Mainline Florida"
and an excellent rendition of "Blues Power", flowing smoothly from one song to the next, leading into the Billy Myles Blues classic,
"Have You Ever Loved A Woman". Now this was turning into the Eric Clapton concert that we had expected to see!
The set ended with an extended version of "Badge" that had the audience on it's feet, with Eric playing that famous "bridge" twice,
giving everyone an extra "chill" to remember. What would the encore number be? Would it be something from Cream? Derek and the Dominos?
Maybe "After Midnight"? But, no! Instead, they took us back to the 50s, with Chuck Berry's "Little Queenie"! "Sunshine Of Your Love"
would have been my pick to end the show, but I couldn't really complain. We had finally gotten to see Eric Clapton live.
Many Many Thanks To Joe
