Well, credit where credit is due hey?. It should be fairly clear by now I’m not a huge fan of this particular label but I’ve also always said I will comment only on the content and not get bogged down in the politics of it all. So, for once, Eye have got their crap together and whether by sheer luck or some good ol’ fashioned negotiating we’ve finally been treated to something fresh and new, rather than being given yet another rip off or re-issue. And it’s certainly a head turner.

What we have here are soundboard recordings taken from the 2 consecutive shows Prince did at 2009’s Montreux Jazz Festival. Already fan favourites, due to the song choices and overall performances, it truly is fantastic to get these recordings in such excellent and crisp quality. In fact, with security as it is these days at gigs (especially with Prince) it’s utterly dumbfounding we can get a soundboard in this day and age. So I guess I’ll have to take my hat off to them on this occasion…. although some may question if this might not be a very risky move from Eye Records. I guess only time will tell on that one.

I do have some criticisms (wouldn’t be much of a critic if I didn’t) and they mostly concern Disc 3 and Eye’s overall engineering work but to be quite honest, for once I’m not gonna give the guys a hard time. As I said at the start, credit where credit is due and I can’t argue with a release like this so take a pat on the back lads and enjoy the results while you can. For everyone else, track this down as soon as you can. An essential addition to your collections this year.
