Favorite moment [right before Chevy Van]:

Dave Pirner: "What is the worst possible song that this band could possibly play right now?"

Audience member: "The next one!"

Ah, Soul Asylum. Even if you don't really love 'em, you just *can't* really hate 'em. They seemed like the goofy kids next door that you probably would rather stay away from your teenage daughter (especially if they have a "Chevy Van"), but you still admire their cheeky spirit.

Being from the same time and place as these guys, we crossed paths several times over the years. In their early incarnation as Loud Fast Rules, one of my early bands shared a bill with them at my old art school, where one of their band members was employed as a janitor, even after Soul Asylum had started to achieve some national acclaim. No pretensions there, whatsoever; just paying the bills. Another band member was dating the roommate of a woman I used to date, so you get past all the illusions about rock stars pretty quickly, etc, and it's just a small world after all.

I remember that at first, when Soul Asylum starting playing covers of seemingly random Top 40 commercial hits, a lot of us in the local scene were somewhat taken aback, but eventually they just kind of elevated that to an art form in itself, and then everyone else started doing it too, although usually not with the same irreverence. Admittedly, my personal tastes have me reaching for their fist four albums more than the later material, but live, they could really do no wrong, and this punchy little tape from Mr. Smith pretty much proves that, I think.

additional notes:

We listened to the recording uploaded by Loughney, and confirmed in a number of places that this *not* the same recording. The really loud "WOOOOHHH!!!" person near the taper on Loughney's recording is actually still audible on this recording, but you can tell that he is nowhere near the taper - he's just really loud.
